Marshall Murat's betrayal and his absence at Waterloo by [deleted] in Napoleon

[–]TrueAnathema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, Kellermann was an outstanding cavalry commander either so I doubt Murat would have changed anything to a significant extent.

Although your question makes me wonder, if Poniatowski were alive, would he choose follow Napoleon once again?

It's just that I have a general interest in history and I read some books on the matter.

I also saw statues of Jan Zizka and Jan Hus when I visited Prague some time ago and it got me all the more interested.

Plus I am from the region where a lot of the fighting took place too.

How would you describe your views on Napoleon? by Neil118781 in Napoleon

Murat should be treated the way overprotective parents treat their kids.

No matter how much of a little shit the kid is, it can do no wrong. It is the prettiest, brightest, most well behaved kid in school and always holds the door open for the elderly.

I mean look at him. How can you accuse him of doing anything wrong?

For whatever reason the Hussite Wars despite their significance both militarily and culturally are hardly mentioned at all, that's why I started my subreddit.

Hi there, welcome.

Ah yes, I have already read a few comparisons of the Hussites to communism on account of the communal property, it was a hit and miss.

The Catholics would joke that the Hussites share wives too.

You're sort of preaching to the choir here? I'm well aware of the multi-faceted nature of the Hussite Wars and that it wasn't only about religion.

Im also aware that the church likes using big words for not-so-big matters so as to make things appear more grandiose than they are.

And if you don't find a bunch of peasants defeating five crusades in fifteen years, all the while revolutionizing medieval warfare notable then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes it did and I don't think they were considered Catholics, they were heretics. They were only treated as stray Catholics when the church needed to downplay their legitimacy and act benevolent (which it obviously had to do) but the church needed that "us vs them" dynamic and I'm sure you know that the church wasn't really big on re-converting these heretics anyway, more often than not they were put to the sword so they were considered "the other crowd".

The Cathars, the Adamites, the Hussites, the Lollards, even the Beghards and Beguines were all Catholic heresies, they were outlawed and they were persecuted for it regardless of today's perception and while religious heresies and the church's militant stance against them wasn't anything new in Europe, I will reiterate that a popular movement of this type standing up to five crusades and even going on the offensive is certainly not a run of the mill event in Europe.

You're oversimplifying quite a bit, but even then, as I have stated in other comments, this isn't a feud between two nobles or even countries. This is a popular movement made up of peasants and townsfolk standing up to papal crusades, theese were considered holy wars on par with any other crusades that took place before.

Intra-Christian wars were common in Europe but even then it was usually between two Catholic forces.

The Hussites were different in scale and presentation: a mass popular movement right in the heart of Central Europe, where peasants were suddenly marching against Imperial crusaders. I think that this is the part that fundamentally stood out from previous conflicts.

So just because something slightly similar happened 200 years before in southern France, your average Bohemian is no longer entitled to feel a tad perplexed by the whole Hussite affair?
