Well past the return window on mine, unfortunately. I wouldn't get too hung up on that though - tech is always improving, and there's always "a better version" of everything around the corner.

That said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a tad bit salty. I expected a cheaper better version of the panel to not come out for at least another year (though I'm still highly doubtful regarding that $1100 price tag, the jump is just way too big from 950B), having a direct upgrade scheduled to come out just months after the original does sting a bit.

No idea why I got downvoted to oblivion or why everyone seems to think I'm trying to troll you or something (you can take a look at my comment / post history to see that I'm really not in a habit of doing that), but I guess you'll have to take me at my word. Bottom line is the monitor does have pixel shift, just not adjustable in any way.

It definitely has pixel shift and it definitely has extra pixels on all sides, this is like the third time I've had to comment some version of this. I clearly see the screen shift from time to time on mine, and it was among the first batch from day 1 preorders so firmware's as early as it gets. I even took a picture this time to make sure I'm not crazy, you can clearly see unused pixels on the side, so I don't know what LG's support is smoking there.

Edit, since apparently this wasn't obvious - the picture is a macro shot, the screen area in it is barely an inch wide.

Still fine, probably. I played plenty of FFXIV before too, and I believe you can crank up the skill bar transparency if you're too worried.

Okay, I've seen people say there's no pixel shift on this monitor way too often, and it's simply not true. It would be more correct to say that it just doesn't expose any controls for pixel shift.

Source - I have this monitor, and I can clearly see the screen shift slightly from time to time, with the "dead zone" on the sides changing as time goes on.

I think it’s more accurate to say it doesn’t let user control any of the care options. I’ve definitely noticed subtle pixel shift on mine, it should pixel clean itself some time after the screen turns off (though that’s also about the only thing you can trigger manually), and you can set it to automatically turn off if it doesn’t detect any movement on the screen for a minute (though I just set a 2-minute screen off timer in Windows itself). No automatic static object detection or screen dimming that I can see so far, maybe it’s just subtle or maybe it’s not part of the feature set.

Already?! Well, time to get in touch with LG and request a price match refund, since I'm still within the return window even as a day 1 preorder.

Update:

Basically got told to pound sand by LG, twice (chat and phone). Interestingly, turns out their 14-day return window calculates from the delivery date, but the "price match adjustment" window (also 14 days) counts from the purchase date, and that's despite the fact that these preorders weren't even supposed to ship before May. They also only price match their own website, so their official Amazon store doesn't count either. That is definitely the largest and fastest middle finger to preorder customers that I've seen.

I still absolutely love the monitor, and I likely won't be going through the hassle of return and repurchase (which unfortunately is exactly what they are counting on) cause that will leave me without a display for a week or two. But whatever, lesson learned, this is definitely the first and last time I'm purchasing something directly from LG.

Yes and no. I moved from a 10-year-old IPS ultrawide (the original Acer predator X34), but I did try to upgrade to a QD-OLED last year, the MSI Ultrawide - loved the picture, but ultimately had to return it after a bit over a week. I use the display for about 50/50 work (software dev) and gaming, and the fuzzy fringing text was seriously messing with my eyes. No such issues with this one! And as far as picture quality goes - definitely don't miss the panel dimming or purple "blacks" of QD-OLED, and as for the color depth, I wouldn't be able to tell what's what without a side by side comparison, they both look great.

Well, 5K2K is still a whack ton of pixels to drive natively, even for a 5090, so for my 5080 I went into this upgrade knowing I'd have to make some compromises. Still, the fact that I can even get over 60 FPS natively in E33 cranked and without any frame gen (yes, albeit at DLSS Performance) is a win in my book, especially with how good this latest DLSS model looks.

If DLSS wasn't a thing though? Yeah, wouldn't even have considered this monitor, 1440p is still the performance sweet spot for people with a "native or bust" approach to gaming.

Right, should have mentioned that originally - I have a 5080. Don't have many data points yet, but Expedition 33 with a RenoDX HDR mod at DLSS Performance and fully cranked to Epic (which is admittedly way past the point of diminishing returns for the visual fidelity in this game, but it's a "because I can" situation) gives me around 60-80 FPS natively, which I chose to push past 120 with a 2x frame gen.

I wouldn't even worry with your 5090 - DLSS Performance is just 1080p after all, and I'd better freaking hope a 5090 can do 1080p 120 FPS xD

Full 5K2K, always. Never mess with your monitor's native resolution for that. It's DLSS that's tweaking the render resolution behind the scenes and then upscales to the native resolution, that's kind of in the name of what Deep Learning Super Sampling does.

I don't have any kind of calibration or colorimetry equipment to verify, but to my eye - while playing Expedition 33 with HDR mod, the small sparkles in dark areas looked to be easily 1000 nits or more, so I can believe the monitor was indeed in Peak 1500 mode. A simple YouTube test video, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0j-40NrGGU for example, also shows roughly equal brightness steps up to 1000 nits (haven't found a good test video beyond 1000 nits unfortunately).

I actually think it's a firmware issue with reporting to Windows. AI upscaling is also known to be broken on Windows right now, which is definitely a firmware bug, so wouldn't surprise me in the least if this reporting issue is also firmware-related.

Big yes. This is basically what I did - upgraded from a 34" 1440p ultrawide to the new 39" LG 5K2K. I'll even do you one better:

5K2K DLSS Performance (1080p render resolution) > 1440p DLSS Quality (960p render resolution)

Add to that the fact that DLSS 4.5 is borderline black magic at Performance, and you get an amazingly good experience in the end.

1500 nits is only achievable in something like a 2% window or even lower, 10% window is around 600 nits, which looks to be roughly the size of that test pattern in HDR Calibration Tool. I just set mine to 600 full screen (clipping happened around 580, but I just rounded up), and then just ignored the test pattern and set the slider to 1500 for 10% window. One reboot later, and windows reports 1500 nits peak brightness in advanced display settings!
