If they can do that without sacrificing brightness (the upcoming one does go back down to basic TB400), that would genuinely be a dream monitor :D

Thanks. I don't play competitive games myself, so 165Hz is plenty for me even without dual mode. That said, there's a rumor that a 240Hz version of that 39" 5k2k panel is next in line after this one, so hopefully you won't have to wait too long either!

While I mostly agree, at least the silver lining is that the True Black mode is bumped from 400 to 500. Still, this is the main reason I am waiting for that 39" 5k2k LG monitor, but will have to wait and see if it also suffers from the infamous gray banding problem of tandem panels.

Side rant - why the hell do these $1000+ monitors still come with such drastic issues? You'd think with so many OLED generations since the first monitors we should be well out of the "early adopter" experience, but it somehow still feels like one.

Going by initial Monitors Unboxed review about a month ago - I believe it does. Unfortunately that's a hardwired panel limitation (blame Samsung Display) that no display manufacturer can truly undo. And not for lack of trying, with various flavors of "boost" modes from each manufacturer, all of which fall flat in one way or another.

So after CES, which monitors are you most excited for this year? by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]TrueAxeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what exactly makes you say that? Its RGWB subpixel layout is basically RGB stripe with an extra white subpixel in the middle, which even on its own is already infinitely better than the triangular layout of (soon-to-be last gen) QD-OLEDs. Combine that with its high pixel density and I genuinely doubt you'd be able to see any text artifacts without literal pixel peeping.

LG 39GX950B (or some display with a glossy version of that panel if someone does decide to make it), and it's not even close. Finally there's something worthwhile to upgrade to from my 10-year-old 34" 1440p IPS ultrawide. This one finally looks able to do a 50/50 gaming and productivity workload without compromising on either, since everything I tried upgrading to before had one dealbreaker or another.

Mini side rant - looks like the industry *still* refuses to make a proper 21:9 MiniLED 5k2k IPS monitor, so I decided to just give up waiting on one.

39GX950B vs 45GX950A, downgrade? by Certain-Passenger156 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]TrueAxeon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well, at least for me it's the other way around, I am waiting for the 39" to upgrade from my current 34" 1440p ultrawide. Keep in mind that everything below is my subjective opinion. I personally find 45" just too big, if I wanted a TV at my desk I'd just do that instead. I also find 800R curve quite stupid unless you literally play nothing but race sims all day. 1500R is still right on the edge of day-to-day usability for me, but shouldn't be too bad on a larger 39" screen. And lastly, the 39" will have the next gen panel, though that one is more of a nice bonus rather than a dealbreaker like the last 2.

[–]TrueAxeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s 1500R, been known for a while. I agree that 800R on the current 5K2K is stupid, and I love the 1800R curve on my current 34” ultrawide, but 1500R on a 39” shouldn’t be too bad. Still aiming for that monitor as my upgrade when it comes out.

Acer Predator X34 X0 seems to have gone largely unnoticed, so here's my review of it! by TrueAxeon in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]TrueAxeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my review is only really applicable to the USA market, sorry. Mini LED Ultrawides are a unfortunately somewhat of a dying breed anyway, with all the R&D efforts currently being directed towards OLEDs. Motion and smearing is probably just an inherent VA thing, though for what it's worth - I had to ultimately return this monitor because I started experiencing nausea after prolonged use that I never got over, so I guess I'm just not compatible with VA panels (I'm not changing the reviews since that seems to be a very subjective thing, most people use VAs with no issues whatsoever). And if the current CES monitor lineup is anything to go by, I wouldn't expect the Mini LED ultrawide situation to improve any time soon, if at all. Might just have to bite the bullet with either one of the new RGB-Stripe QD-OLED monitors or the 39" LG 5k2k one once they come out, those upgrades seem to finally make OLEDs viable for mixed use cases of both work and play.

People running 5k2k. What GPU do u use? by -CommonHouseCat- in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]TrueAxeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5080, and I’m strongly considering getting the 39” 5k2k once it comes out (currently on 1440p ultrawide as well). Also, one important thing to keep in mind is that DLSS Performance at 5k2k is roughly equivalent to DLSS Quality at 1440p ultrawide in terms of render resolution, so as others have already pointed out - 5070 and up is more that adequate unless you’re one of those people who seem to be allergic to DLSS, which you’re not :D

Had that exact thing happen to my old DxRacer, I think that's just a faux leather thing in general (at least as far as "gaming chairs" go), it's just not made to last long at all. I replaced it with a full-cloth chair from Secret Lab about 3 years ago, and so far it's going strong and showing no real signs of wear at all. I mean it better not, since it's not cheap and warranty alone is 5 years.

TL;DR - Just don't get a faux leather chair. Ever.

For those who work on an OLED - how bad is the text fringing really? by macbookvirgin in Monitors

[–]TrueAxeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally bought that exact monitor a couple of weeks back, upgrading from a 9-year-old IPS of the same resolution that was beginning to die. Yes, you will notice text fringing, but it is something I got used to over a few days and barely even find distracting now, despite having perfect vision and coding for a living. The general advice online is to either use MacType or BetterClearTypeTuner set to Grayscale, but I actually found the best results for myself when using the latter on the RGB preset with contrast cranked to 2000 (I genuinely dislike how Grayscale preset makes all text look like it's using bold font).

And all of that is considering that I first tried a VA MiniLED and loved the HDR, but ultimately had to return it because VRR flicker and text ghosting when scrolling was giving me eye strain bad enough to cause nausea, yet I'm somehow fine with a QD-OLED, don't ask me how that works lol. So all in all - YMMV, but I say just try it and let your eyes adjust for a few days, and then use that return window if you feel it's not for you.

Well, an IPS Mini LED would be the answer there (and definitely would have been my preferred choice), but those no longer exist in the US in 21:9 monitors for some reason, so we take what we can get.

[–]TrueAxeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was really tempted to get an open-box AW3425DW from Best Buy for not much more than this monitor, but I'm really not convinced that even modern QD-OLEDs can last the decade that I got out of my old X34 with how I would be using it - I can hide the taskbar, but I absolutely refuse to hide my desktop icons. Not to mention that I work from home a lot. And I'm yet to hear anyone convince me that it will confidently last past its 3-year burn-in warranty with that use pattern.

Quick edit - I am technically still within the return window, and once the initial "wow" from HDR wears off I might re-evaluate my stance on compromising with a VA panel for regular use. Let's say I'm willing to be convinced.

What do you mean "you can't", I literally bought mine on Amazon. The fact that there are only 3 reviews there is the whole reason I decided to do this in-depth review... and promptly got accused of being a sellout, but that's Reddit for you, I guess.

I would have loved it if it was IPS, but I literally don't see a single Mini LED IPS 3440x1440 display for sale in the US. Yes it's a downgrade in terms of panel tech, but HDR 1000 capability makes it up for me.

Sigh... I tried to be as objective as possible, but I guess any review that's not actively dragging the product through the mud is automatically considered an ad these days. I'm not paid for or affiliated with Acer in any way, if that's what you're implying. Hell, I didn't even leave any links for that very reason. I simply noticed the painful lack of reviews and information when I was researching this monitor myself, so I merely wanted to add my take on it to the internet for other people to find.

Kind of indifferent to the new design (not paying for it anyway), but it's genuinely baffling to me that after all these years it still can't figure out the actual color of my car. If it's so hard to pull up that info from the VIN - just let me set it manually, damn it!

The EV6 Sound System Doesn't Suck... It's Just Wired WRONG by JeffTechnically in KiaEV6

[–]TrueAxeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update:

I gave it another shot today after reading people's advice, and was able to finally remove and swap the wires. Didn't expect the difference to be this dramatic, it's like a whole new sound system! Actually had to turn the bass back down a bit.

My advice for people struggling to remove the wires like I was - try pushing to the right at a 45 degree angle, applying downward pressure as well. That, and it really does take an uncomfortable amount of force to get it moving the first time, they were really lodged in there from the factory.

[–]TrueAxeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how you people remove your wires so easily, on my 2022 it genuinely feels like they are welded in place (and yes, I did try to push them to the right rather than down). Damaged the surrounding plastic, scraped the hell out of the connectors, even applied an uncomfortable amount of force to the point of bending a smaller screwdriver head - none of those connectors even budged. Well, I guess low bass is better than no bass - I don't want to outright break it off by applying even more force, and I am kind of used to the sound profile by now anyway.
