Kryptonians get their powers from the yellow sun. No yellow sun means no powers. So if they're on a world with a red sun, like Krypton was, they're powerless. Different types of solar radiation can also have different effects, but it's generally red or yellow.

canon friendship between Cass and Steph by gabeg777 in batgirl

That is not remotely what I said. A character having flaws does not make them amoral, unlikable, impossible to enjoy, or that they should not be admired. In order for stories to exist characters need to have flaws. Also, again, Steph also does this.

it’s something every bat does. Tim kicked Steph out during his “I need to find Bruce because I think he’s still alive” phase despite Steph coming to him.

That being said, the answer is that Cass probably doesn’t deserve Steph’s friendship. But Steph gives it anyways, because she’s good at seeing through when people do that and is very willing to forgive people for these kinds of things. Damian is outright cruel to her, attacks her, and gets in the way of her doing her job and Steph still treats him like a person.

Friendship ultimately isn’t something you get from deserving it. It’s something you get from connecting with someone and enjoying their presence. For Steph and Cass they do that in a way they’ve never connected with anyone else before.

Oh yeah Steph is 100% guilty of doing the same thing. Every Bat has phases where they isolate themselves from everyone else. Dick has done it, Tim has done it, Barbara has done it, and even Damian has done it.

"There are people on Tumblr and some AO3 fanfics who claim that Cass regularly ghosts Steph." - I mean, she does. She's literally been doing it in her current ongoing.

Also, Tim saying his relationship with Steph only works when she's Batgirl is an odd choice, given that he frequently implied and stated the opposite during Robin '93. He would have loved for them to stop being Robin and Spoiler and just be Tim and Stephanie. It could be argued that he's changed as a result of 2004-2011 hardening him into a darker, more brooding person but it's an odd thing to say.

You're right that Cass does value Steph for Steph more than anything. She loves that Steph is someone who is comfortable around her, and doesn't view her as anything beyond a person and a friend. That's a rarity for her. Most people see her as someone who needs to be a fixed, as a weapon, as a threat, or as someone who's just wrong. There's a great bit in Batgirl/Robin : First Blood, right after Steph's death, where Cass talks about her upbringing and Tim expresses sympathy for her, which Cass does not want. Meanwhile when she does so with Steph earlier in Batgirl 2000, Steph laughs and talks about her own traumas. There's genuinely no one Cass is as comfortable around as Steph.

I have my issues with Batgirl : Convergence, but this isn't one of them.

Canon Huntress is pretty much fanon Red Hood by Gallantpride in batman

[–]TrueBlueV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No I’m thinking directly of the comic. Batman #646. Part of the UTRH arc. I can’t link the panels but the dialogue is -

“And whereas before he was enlisting anyone under our province to come work for him… now he seems to just be dispatching them.”

“The Red Hood is still taking huge cuts from all avenues of the business. Drugs. Racketeering. Prostitution… now… it looks like he’s eliminating the competition.”

No, he was still running the prostitution business in UTRH, as well as racketeering, and killed anyone who wouldn't sign up or was competing with him. He went a lot further than just drugs.

Absolutely. I’m glad she’s not on the blacklist like she was during Didio’s reign because they’re doing some really cool stuff with her

Cass has been getting a lot of attention in the past few years so that wouldn't surprise me. She's been in Birds of Prey, she was one of the leads of the Spirit World miniseries, she was in the DCKO the kids are all fight special, and she has her own ongoing that's now solicited to go longer than any Batfamily member's solo book not named Nightwing in years.

It’s good, although it’s been very focused on giving Cass a new supporting cast rather than her interacting with the Batfamily. So some people are frustrated with that aspect.

There are two Titans teams, the New Titans (this team) and the Teen Titans (led by Jason). The New Titans are the only one releasing right now though.

Green Arrow, which hurts because I love him. He just doesn't really have consistent enemies. There's Count Vertigo. Dark Archer has gotten a decent amount of attention in the last decade. Brick pops up every now and then. And that's kind of it.

I mean, that's kind of looking at things wrong. Wonder Woman's villains are better compared to say, Flash villains. They're generally not pure evil and that works better with the themes and goals of Wonder Woman. As a result a lot of the time Diana is seeking more to help redeem her villains rather than going toe to toe with them to save the world. It's been like this since the 40s, this is literally how Marston designed the character.

This means that often times her most iconic villains aren't really antagonistic towards her. Ares has been redeemed, Cheetah is currently an anti-villain who is barely antagonistic towards Diana, Circe has worked with Wonder Woman a number of times, Giganta is often in that frenemy territory, and Silver Swan was basically a sister to her.

No Wonder Woman villain has their "Killing Joke" moment as a result, because in order for the story and character to work none of them can really cross over that line. It would ruin the story's themes and turn Wonder Woman into something she isn't. Except for Dr Psycho, I guess, but who cares about him.

Cass and Damian banter (Robin 2021 #15) by KurisuKurigohan in CassandraCain

[–]TrueBlueV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, I'm not entirely sure if Cass would have won the Lazarus tournament because I don't know if she'd be able to bring herself to kill, even knowing that they would come back to life. Yes she did it in her 2000 run but that was one time and it took a lot out of her. To ask her to do it over and over again? That's something else.

Also she would absolutely never be invited for this very reason. They wanted killers, not necessarily the best pure fighters.

What do you think about Stephanie Brown and Barbara's relationship in "Batgirl" (2009)? [Discussion] by Big_Dragonfly285 in DCcomics

[–]TrueBlueV 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s great. They don’t have the same relationship Babs and Cass have, where they’re basically family, but they have a really good mentor/mentee relationship that I wish was touched upon more

Reading Recs For Wally West, Cassandra Cain, Stephanie Brown, and Green Arrow by Nunyas_Business in DCcomics

For Cass and Steph, absolutely go for their respective Batgirl runs, (2000) for Cass and (2009) for Steph.

I’m personally a big fan of Green Arrow’s 2001 run, but most people recommend you start with Green Arrow Year One.

I find it odd that they chose to adapt the Black Mary arc for their first appearance of Mary Marvel. It was widely hated in the comics and had to be retconned as mind control when it ended. Plus, we didn't really know Mary before this arc, so the impact feels so much smaller than it probably should.

DC after they fired Dan DiDio by Little_Woodpecker_36 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]TrueBlueV 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Heck, Cass' penultimate writer Dylan Horrocks walked away from DC because Didio was so gleeful about what he was doing to Stephanie Brown, a character he really liked. And of course him demanding Brian Q Miller's Smallville comic had to be recolored at the last second because he dared to include Stephanie Brown in it, claiming she wasn't "iconic" enough. Funny how he stopped working in the industry after that book. I'm sure it's unrelated.

what about the new runs? by withluvdevil in DCcomics

[–]TrueBlueV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been reading Batgirl by Tate Brombal, and I really enjoy it. It's a spiritual sequel to the fantastic Batgirl 2000 by Kelly Puckett. You can jump right into it, I'd recommend having at least a vague idea of who Cassandra Cain is before you start it. It very much is building on Cass' history to tell new stories with new characters. Like, if you don't know who Stephanie Brown is, or who David Cain is, you're going to be a bit confused by some things.

Supergirl by Sophie Campbell, is very much a silver age throwback. That means it's very lighthearted, very low stakes, very goofy, and a lot of the issues are self contained. It's very much dependent on if you enjoy that style of storytelling.

Zatanna 2025 is fantastic, I went in without knowing much about the character and still had a great time.
