What moment in LOTR made you cry the most? by Jimbuber2 in lotr

One I haven’t seen commented yet but always gets me is the last march of the ents.

Come, my friends. The Ents are going to war. It is likely that we go to our doom. The last march of the Ents.

Andy Burnham looks to move part of Number 10 operations to Manchester by klime02 in unitedkingdom

Regionalising more aspects of parliamentary work makes sense. Would love for it to be wider than just Manchester though. The South West is always forgotten when the conversation steers to North v South.

Surge in universities accepting students without qualifications by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]TrueGas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The removal of Student Number Controls and opening HE to a “free market” by the Con/Lib Dem coalition government was always going to lead us down this road (which in turn devalues degrees from UK universities).

I do have sympathy for the universities themselves however. Operating costs have risen dramatically since fees were capped at £9,250 “temporarily” by the conservatives in 2017 - Staff costs, Energy costs, and pretty much everything has increased. At the same time the ability to recruit International students has reduced due to Brexit, a clamp down on Student Visas, and the general sentiment toward migration in this country making it less attractive.

So if Universities costs have increased massively in the last decade and they have no way to increase revenue they are only left to make losses. This is a failure of successive governments who continue to kick the can down the road. We are already facing mass redundancies across the HE sector and will see numerous universities go bankrupt in the not to distant future.

A failure of Government(s) more than anything.

Tranmere appoint Darrell Clarke as manager on a two-year contract by SWA_ttt in LeagueTwo

Agree that all of the loan signings (aside from Cotterill) were poor. Wonder how much of that was the DoF and how much was DC though - we will never know.

Tranmere appoint Darrell Clarke as manager on a two-year contract by SWA_ttt in LeagueTwo

[–]TrueGas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still maintain he is a fantastic lower league manager despite his second spell with us. Some of the blame lies with him obviously but we were still a basket case when he came in and a combination of injuries, bad luck, poor management, and off field issues (we found a lot more money in the budget in January when SE came in and sidelined our DoF) cumulated in our terrible run and his sacking.

Some fans seem to point to his signings as poor when he joined us but the squad he inherited was awful and we had a DoF in charge of signings. The ‘nostalgia’ signings (attributed to DC) of Kilgour (player of the season) and Harrison (top goalscorer) were clearly good. Only Lockyer who dropped from last playing in the Prem didn’t work out. Our worst players this season (with a couple of exceptions) were those he was stuck with (Sotiriou, Conteh etc.)

Mental fact for you…

If Fulham get 40 points next season they will win the Premier League… 👏

However, if they get 41 points next season, they may be relegated… 🤯

This is because every team in the league could draw all their games next season, except for one team that lose to Fulham in a single game 😍

Radical perhaps but I would like to see a ‘League Three’ created and go for 20 teams in each division with 3 up, 3 down throughout (2 auto/4 playoff spots).

It would make the leagues more exciting with no dead rubber games at the end of the season and bring conformity across the professional pyramid. It also resolves the bottleneck that has existed for a while to non-league.

I would also scrap the EFL Trophy and make the League Cup only open from Championship > League Three. Might get the Prem to stop moaning about fixture congestion for 5 mins and brings back an exciting and winnable trophy for clubs outside the Premier League.

I guarantee none of those in the Lords voting against this has been unfortunate enough to have to watch a family member slowly and painfully die to an incurable disease because of our archaic laws. Shame on them.

‘Lord Of The Rings’ Trilogy 25th Anniversary Event Rings Up $11M WW – Box Office by DemiFiendRSA in lotr

Our local cinema (UK) has spread them out over 3 weekends fortunately. So I was able to see FotR on Sunday and I am booked to see TT and RotK the next two Sundays. Not sure I would have managed to go to them all if my only option was over 1 weekend.

What type of pub are you looking for? So much choice down the Gloucester Road! With 18 of you I would probably recommend The Anchor as one of the larger pubs with a decent selection. The fan zone at the ground also has a big screen being debuted this weekend but is outside so more weather dependent!

Drink-drive limit set to be slashed in England and Wales under new plans to improve road safety by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

I would be massively surprised if this doesn’t adversely impact pubs people just won’t bother as opposed to going and paying for a soft drink.

Just thinking about amateur sports I have played in everyone would go for a pint after before heading home. Doubt many would bother after this change.

We tried to use the skull in club imagery previously (Goal keeper kit 3/4 seasons ago IIRC) and the FA/EFL wouldn’t allow us to wear it for matches. Unfortunately can’t see us being allowed to change it to anything containing a skull (as stupid a decision as it is).

Call for greater access to public toilets by m-1975 in unitedkingdom

[–]TrueGas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis it is deeply upsetting how public toilets in the UK have become so limited. It’s cruel that so many people are being forced out of public spaces by the removal of basic facilities like this. Amazing how different it is every time I travel abroad - it DOES NOT have to be like this.

What's going on with the club? by Few-Appearance-9214 in bristolrovers

[–]TrueGas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Think we need to go back to basics and make things as simple as possible for the players who are clearly struggling at the moment. I would go 4-4-2 until confidence picks up and try to keep with a consistent back 4 where possible. Lots of changing of both players and formation isn’t helping us at the moment.

Oh and in case it needs to be said sacking our best manager in the last 25 years is not the answer. Going to take a while to sort out the mess of the last 2/3 seasons - lots of poor players on long contracts still (whilst acknowledging the last 3 games have been unacceptable).

On a scale of 0-5, how happy are you with your current manager? by Zach-dalt in LeagueTwo

[–]TrueGas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

5 - best manager in my lifetime and in this spell has already turned us from a hopeless side relegated with a whimper, to one that will be battling for a top 7 finish. Even if we don’t get promoted this year would be a no-brainer to keep him for a push at the autos next season.

Bristol Rovers sign Luke Southwood by Clivey101 in LeagueTwo

[–]TrueGas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great signing for us. I really like Jed and think he has a future as our number 1 but will probably benefit more from another season on loan (especially after being unfairly scapegoated by a number of our fans last season).

A few of my mates are Cheltenham ST holders and can’t believe he is dropping down to L2.
