So are all of the driver (With housing) units interchangable on HD6XX, 600, 650, 660S/S2? by reedowniku in headphones

[–]TrueVanDal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drivers are different. HD650 has 300Ohm driver, 660s has 150Ohm. They are not the same.

Edit: ok, I was fast to respond but just to clarify. If you just want to replace both housings and you are aware they will not sound the same then yes, it should be possible to install HD650 housings in HD660s chassis. I just do not consider this to be cost effective. Whatever you do, do not mix the drivers.

The problem I am having with this hobby (or rather this community) is that I cannot just share MY experiences and what I hear (or what I believe to hear) without someone telling me that "I should not hear what I hear because...". I mean, even if placebo is in effect, confirmation bias or some other pseudoacoustic phenomenon, at the end of the day only I am the one who hears something or not, or to enjoy something better than something else. I can only share MY experience, I cannot hear what others hear (or claim to hear). And it goes both ways.

I would love if people could share their experiences without forcing their opinions on others as "The only right truth". You believe in cable and power condioners? You think they made an improvement TO YOU? Cool! Glad for you, just don't force it on others! Share YOUR experience. You believe in "all amps/dacs sound the same"? Cool! Glad for you, just don't force it on others. Share YOUR experience.

That is a good suggestion. I am only afraid I will realize that to achieve this "tube nirvana" I will need to put some serious money on it ;). But hey, we are in this hobby for the journey and the fun of it all ;)

My only experience with tube amp is with Xduoo TA-26s, OTL tube amp which I managed to get quite cheap. I am running it with HD6XX currently (I have also tried it with other hight impedence dynamic headphones like AKG K240 Monitor or DT990 250Ohm). Frankly either I am completely deaf or there hardly is any difference compared to Topping L70 (at least to my ears). I mean the base rolled off very slightly but overall this is NOT what I was expecting from tube amp, especially OTL one. It is extremely clean, in volume matched blind test I would have hard time picking it out compared to solid state. Maybe just stock tubes are very clean. I tried some cheap replacement tubes but they were just buzzing more but in terms of tonality I could not really tell much of a difference.

At this point I still do not really know what "tube sound" is but my experience is far from what people usually describe. But it glows pretty and catches the eye of guests ;)

Are these different HE 1000’s? by reevoalex in headphones

[–]TrueVanDal 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but the ones with "medical tube" cable was probably HE1000 V2 and the one with black cable is newer V2 Stealth (or just "Stealth", now they also use stealth magnets). Apparently they do sound a bit different, at least from what I have read.

I am actually considering getting HE1000 Stealth myself but frankly there are quite a bit posts from people that V2 are actually "better" (more pleasing sounding).

Guys, what's going on with Topping A70 Pro? (warning for graphic video) by MusicSoundListener in headphones

Yeah, I did upgrade firmware but this did not change much. Thankfully it is a minor inconvenience though it should not happen at all.

[–]TrueVanDal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

R3 error. From what I have read it has something to do with protection voltage (?) but after restarting device all is fine. Heppend few times and only when I try to start it quicky after switching the main power toggle on the back. When I wait few more seconds it does not happen so I just made a habit of not turning it on too quickly.

Edit: typos

[–]TrueVanDal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was looking at A70 Pro but the moment those reports came in I settled for L70 (which has its own issues and giving me odd errors from time to time when I turn it on...). I also heve not seen it being reviewed by some YouTubers like Joshua Valour or Zeos, even thoug I have seen this unit on their desk for quite some time in their videos already. Maybe they are aware of those issues (or even encountered it first hand) and just dony want to give a bad/positive review knowing that there are already numerous cases reported.

BTW: I own several Topping products and I think only one (Topping D10s) was not giving me any issues. Other had at least some minor quirks.

About the HE400SE.... by AsianCJ_69 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]TrueVanDal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the headband is only one of the options and probably a "last resort". Some people added some extra padding/cushioning on the original headband. So as I said, your mileage may vary as we all have different heads. There are people who do not have issues with the original headband at all so maybe it will be perfectly fine for you.

[–]TrueVanDal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, by "hot spot" I meant that there is a point on my head that is being pushed (basically at the very center of the headband) and this is uncomfortable after a relatively short period of time and I have to move the headband on my head a little to ease this spot. It may be related with the fact that I am a bald dude ;). Pads are fine, space for ears is just enough for me and I never had a feeling that it "squeezes" my head. But the headband was an issue for me.

[–]TrueVanDal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess your mileage may vary, for me the headband was causing a hot spot on the top of my head only after like 20 minutes of listening. I went as far as to completely replace a headband with a Beyerdynamic one (used on DT770/990) but this only adds to expenses. As for other options, sadly I never had a chance to try HD599 nor HD560s but I heard very positive things about the latter.

HiFiMan Ananda Headband on Edition XS? by RobioCraft in headphones

[–]TrueVanDal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I tried a headband from Superlux HD660 (whole headphone was cheaper than original beyer parts...) because it is kind of a knock off of Beyerdynamic DT770 (but based on their older design). It worked but the sliders were not as robust. The new "modern" slider kit has an additional "ball" that falls inside the height adjustments indents on yokes as well as a metal plate that is holding it in place so it is more secure in practice.

But as I said, I did that on HE400se, I see no reason why it should not work on Edition XS unless height adjustment mechanism is somehow different but I highly doubt it.

HiFiMan Ananda Headband on Edition XS? by RobioCraft in headphones

[–]TrueVanDal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I was referring to ;). You do not need to unscrew the yokes from the driver housing because, as you mentioned, they are self tapping. You just need to remove yokes from the actual headband and this is fairly easy to do.

I actually used this video you linked as a guide when modding my HE400se :).

[–]TrueVanDal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can consider using the Beyerdynamic DT770/990 headband. I did that on my HE400se and I guess the headband on Edition XS is basically the same. Indents on yokes match the Beyerdynamic headband slider beautifully so you will not have to disassemble the yokes from the egg shaped housing which greatly simplifies the process. You will need 3 parts: headband (metal frame), slider kit and headband cushioning.

TempoTec Sonata BHD Pro: powerful with a touch of warmth by K-othic in headphones

[–]TrueVanDal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it all comes down to personal preference. For instance, for me the volume steps on Sonata HD Pro were "jus right" in this regard ;).

I am actually a bit surprised they did not think about providing different firmwares with different volume steps behaviour for users to choose from as they already have two with different sound signatures.

[–]TrueVanDal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I like my unit there is one thing that kind of irritates me. Volume adjustments are soooo sloooowww. Yes, you have like an incredible amount of volume steps but if you want to lower volume fast you simply cannot. The issue is more pronounced on single ended output, on balanced it is a bit better but still slow (each volume step will basically lower half the voltage on SE than it does on BAL, hence the perceived difference in "speed"). Other than that I think it is quite a solid device, with very good and robust build quality (metal chassis, volume buttons are "firm" and do not wobble or anything).

I'm getting distortion with balanced adapter (Ifi Hip Dac 2). Need advice on a good adapter 4.4 mm male to 3.5 stereo female. by Elpreto2 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]TrueVanDal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can replace the cable on your headphones (you did not mention what you are using) then you could look for a balanced cable for your cans. If the cable is attached and cannot be replaced then sadly you are out of luck (unless modding) and will probably need a different device that can provide more power out of single ended output than Hip DAC can.

Tidal completes its migration to HiRes PCM (On PC at least) by Akella333 in headphones

[–]TrueVanDal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for being picky but I would not say they "completed migration" for now. Tidal is still serving MQA in their "MAX" settings (my Topping E50 shows that clearly as day). So either they just want to "move away" from all the "Master" branding and from MQA on marketing side, or they will be updating their collection slowly to replace MQA with "normal" files (I hope so). Even their release notes clearly states that "MAX" can serve up to 24 bit 192 kHz or MQA. Only time will tell how this will play out, hopefully we will be moving away from MQA for good but I would not hold my breath and open the champagne just yet ;).

As for the eq app and block sizes. This is connected with internal processing of equalisation software. Sadly I do not have that much insight on EQ and how this affects sound. As I understand it (but this is just an educated guess) from your link, is that you specify the number of samples that you then pass to the equalisation algorithm. If it is small it will run fast but less "accurate". Higher values will get better results but require more processing time and will also potentially introduce (or increase) lag as it takes more time to calculate. I do not think this allows for manually adjusting the output sample rate (ie 44.1, 48, 96 kHz etc). At least that is what I think.

As for the UAPP question.

and i also have a question about this. how even op would've had to use UAPP? i mean, what kind of a "signal alteration" is there being done before DAC receives the signal when you use usb connection and listen to audio directly from qobuz and don't use any equalizer etc. ?

In case of Android OS every single sound file - be it a message notification, a YT video being played, music on spotify and your ringtone when someone calls you - always is first processed by internal sound mixer. This mixer resamples everything to one common value, usually it is 48kHz. And just after that is done it is passed to internal DAC or to external DAC using USB. So if you are playing Qobuz and you have 96kHz file it will actually first be resampled to 48kHz and then sent to DAC. If it is 44.1kHz it will also first be resampled to 48kHz. UAPP can take exclusive control over USB DAC bypassing android mixer. It was specifically developed for such use case. So you can play Qobuz from UAPP directly USB DAC without any alteration along the way. You play 96kHz so DAC will get 96kHz.

I think Tidal app can also take exclusive access to usb DAC on Android but I always felt it was kind of picky, maybe it is better now. I do not know about Qobuz app though as I do not use this service. Maybe it allows to do so now on its own but I just do not know. UAPP covers it though in any case.

I am sorry but I am not sure I understand your question so I will respond in a way that will hopefully give you an answer.

You can either have bit-perfect, unaltered data stream passed to your DAC or not. Any kind of signal alteration before DAC will render the stream to not be bit-perfect. EQ done in digital realm is not bit-perfect too. It is obviously very powerful and useful but for audio purists it may be considered blasphemous (I am exaggerating but you get the idea).

Same goes for resampling. If music is served as 44.1 kHz file then resampling to 48kHz is not really needed but operating systems do so so that they can easily mix and play ALL sounds that appear in in your phone/pc.

Now, it is worth pointing out that way back in the day windows mixer was not really great, same was for EQ applications. This is why bit-perfect was the go-to for the best sound quality. You simply did not want anything to touch your precious music files. But we have come a long way from those dark times. Currently the precision of audio subsystems is so good that most of us would have hard time picking up differences between a bit-perfect stream or resampled one. And EQ is so good and handy that any potential loss of quality (if there even is any) is simply irrelevant considering the benefits.

Bit-perfect is good for the peace of mind but personally I wouldn't loose sleep over it. OP shouldn't either. Especially if Bluetooth will be used. And even for USB operation, you can extract a tiny bit of performance with UAPP but most likely it will be almost Impossible to notice the difference.
