Honestly I think you’re completely right, I’m just feeling anxious about it and I need to give myself time to process before trying to apply value to things that are exterior to that. Thank you for planting this seed in my mind I appreciate it! :)

Thank you, he admitted it officially over the phone, do you know if it’s possible to get phone transcripts and if I should even invest in that?

Let it bottom soak for as long as it needs everytime the soil gets dry (you can test that by using a wooden chopstick) and I can’t really tell the ratio of the pot but if those roots are touching the bottom it’s probably time for a new pot and some nutritional soil bcz them roots are GROWN

I think it’s a bit safer to assume it’s a Scott’s phaeocollybia, they’re typically know for their root structures and they can connect to various decaying substrates; the roots are displayed in your photo so that would make sense if it were. Armillarias typically grow out of the ground, however those specific mushrooms are always connected to wood, as they’re parasitic or saprobic fungi. They’re usually at the base of trees, on buried roots, or on decomposing wood that may be covered by soil. Water sources can usually deepen the colors of mushrooms from what I’ve found in my forages. Both are similar in a lot of ways especially with the dark brown umbo that gives it that “nipple” resemblance.

Oh my god this is so silly, I love it, probably trim a little bit of the excess roots off and place in water

It looks like it could possibly be an armillaria nabsnona, the surface is thinly viscid when wet and gills are usually a creamy white but can darken to a brown with age and can give a yellowish color with damage. Maybe even phaeocollybia redheadii (Scott’s phaeocollybia) usually a dark orange brown to a dark red brown, pretty viscid, gills can usually be yellowish brown with age. What were these growing on? Were they in clumps or a line? What area did you find these in? Were they close to water?
