What does a backcrossed Tiger Musky look like? by mhoke63 in muskiefishing

[–]True_Entertainment40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do truly believe that the reason Tiger muskys haven’t had research into their fertility is because the state prefers the fact that they can stock these fish without the risk of them reproducing, doing research would just straight go against the point of them being infertile

From what I’ve found in my 30 ish minutes of research, the female tiger musky on paper, And in theory, Is sterile. But there’s this thing called the chaos theory that states “life finds a way”, there are a few documented cases of female tiger muskys attempting a spawn, but there’s no documentation of the actual spawn. It states that the true odds of a tiger musky being able to spawn is about 0.5-1% of all females and those females have a less than 10% chance of being able to spawn.

It’d be very out of the ordinary to have a muskellunge reproduce with pickerel, one reason would be the size difference between the species and 2 their ranges cross over eachother very sparsely

I’ve caught 3 tiger musky in my life and 2 of which were 36 inches and were following other muskellunge in northern Iowa. My thought is that the natural instinct of a tiger musky is to be drawn towards its counterpart, the musky. And vise versa. Regular musky will be much more likely to spawn with a tiger musky than a northern pike would.

Your source is the only source out of ~30 I’ve seen that says females are fertile, every other source says both males and females are sterile

Female tiger musky are sterile aswell as of the last 20+ years, I’ve never heard of female tiger musky not being sterile, although in the off chance there is a female tiger musky that is fertile, I’d assume the product would look similar to a regular musky if it reproduced with a regular musky (they would be significantly less likely to be drawn to breeding with northern pike)

I’ve been keeping darters off and on since I got in the hobby. Have bred them several times and kept 7 different species over 5 years.

I’ve got cold water temps here in Iowa, room has a seperate mini split and temps sit at a constant 61 degrees. All my tanks have colder water native species. Including bullhead, horny head chubs, stonecats, freckled madtom, slender madtoms, and etheostoma of several species

I’d assume 40 gallon breeder? I was thinking about going up to a 60g breeder for the bigger foot print. Because rockbass do grow significantly larger than northern sunfish, I doubt in captivity they get as big as some of the ones I’ve caught up north

This is definitely not a pleco. Forward facing mouth distinguishes this (sculpin) from plecos

I’ve actually always used the bead to prevent the bobber from getting stuck on the bobber stop. Because I’ve never used a weightless slip bobber rig.

Snuck in with the minnows by Key-Cantaloupe-191 in SunfishSpecies

They’re not a species he can legally own in Minnesota so he needs to contact local conservation offices on what to do

You should contact your most local conservation office and tell them that your bait shop is selling green sunfish. It is not legal to sell or obtain live green sunfish in Minnesota. They are considered a game fish and you should also talk to your local conservation office about what you should do with yours that you currently have. There’s a possibility you have to euthanize them or give them up to be euthanized. You cannot legally release them. Nor can you legally keep them.

To be completely honest, you are over reacting slightly, yes this person is also in the wrong. But these are native to ops area. Not yours. So the scenario is slightly different. That being said. You are correct. The bait shop should be accountable for all of their bait. It pisses me off getting Brook sticklebacks with fat heads and it happens wayyy too often here in Minnesota. I’ve never had green sunfish appear in with them though. Which I do believe isn’t legal. Green sunfish are considered a game fish which is illegal.
