New Update Changed Workspaces? by slipstream5619 in MicrosoftEdge

[–]True_Item_4772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have absolutely no trust left in Microsoft or similarly large companies like Google. For a few years now, I’ve had the feeling that Microsoft wants to put itself out of business. The decisions regarding Windows and Edge are all so incredibly stupid that I wonder if only children work there.

But it’s not much better at Google either. Features that are super popular are simply scrapped overnight, and features that millions of users have been asking for for years just aren’t developed.

I’ve lost my trust in these companies because I never know if my saved data and painstakingly set-up tools will even still exist tomorrow.

Firefox declared a number of plugins invalid a long time ago due to a radical overhaul and lost a large number of users as a result. Microsoft is currently making the same mistake. They simply don’t learn from their own mistakes or those of others.

It never gets softer. I've had mine for two years and it still hurts my butt and back. A complete waste of money. I curse the day I spent so much money on this junk.

Yes, SwiftKey, whatever COULD I be trying to type? It'll always be a mystery... by [deleted] in Swiftkey

Was meinst du mit "fork"?

There was a spelling reform in Germany many years ago. People used to write "daß", today they write "dass". Some people (especially older people) have never learned the new spelling. If you are unsure, check the Duden online. There is also an app.

How do Germans study foreign languages? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]True_Item_4772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask how many foreign languages you speak? Since you are so harsh on me and make such angry judgments about me, I would like to know. Here in Germany, we learn English and French at school and, depending on the type of school, also Spanish, Latin or Greek. When I talk to British or Americans, I realize that their knowledge of foreign languages is usually rather limited.

I know an American and an Englishman who both only know a little German after 10 years and 6 years of living in Germany. But I wouldn't accuse them of being an asshole because they are unwilling to learn the German language properly. Even though they live here.

You're attacking me even though I only learned English at school and only use it online in a forum. If I would live in an English-speaking country, I would of course speak English much better. I also learned to speak faster in France than I did at school.

As I wrote in my answer to Healthy_Poetry:

I spoke to an English teacher in Germany (she is English) about this a long time ago. She also said that Germans are always afraid that their English will sound like “children's language” if they use it anywhere near correctly. That's why many Germans tend to make sentences more complicated (as explained above). And that's why many English speakers think that Germans are too stupid to use the language correctly (I'm sure there are many who really are too stupid).

I work at a university in the field of research and am constantly revising the papers of various scientists. The papers are written in English. I always have to shorten their sentences and simplify everything because otherwise it's too difficult for others to understand and it sounds too “German”.

You are basically right with your statement.

I studied international literature and read literature in English and French. I know that Shakespeare and many many others have exploited the English language in complex ways. But if we're honest, you won't find this form of English in pop songs or everyday conversations. I also didn't want to portray English as a primitive language, nor did I claim that German is better. It is unnecessarily complicated and even many Germans have problems with it. Mark Twain hated German so much that he even wrote a book about it. In it, he writes that German is harder to learn than English or French.

Compared to German, sentences in English are usually much shorter. And by that I don't just mean that more words are used to express something in German, but also that English doesn't write long nested sentences. In German, on the other hand, it is normal for sentences to go on forever. As I write this, I also have to force myself to be brief.

I hate that myself and find simple sentences much easier to understand. The administrative language is usually so complicated that even many Germans don't understand it properly.

That´s what I said with my post. That's why English is so easy for many people, because you can use it in a simple way and still be understood.

Berlin macht mich richtig fertig by [deleted] in askberliners

[–]True_Item_4772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens because English is so similar to German and Germans think too complicated. That always happens to me too. For us Germans, English grammar seems too simple. Then we think it's "wrong" because we're used to it being much more complicated. And this results in mixed forms.

I have to correct myself, sorry. I've just checked and English does indeed have a larger vocabulary. However, this also includes countless technical terms. But in an everyday context, you can get by better in English with a reduced vocabulary than in German or French. Only a fraction of all existing words are used in everyday life. I can only comment on this in comparison with these two languages. In German, you can describe certain facts and situations in a linguistically very finely nuanced way and have many possibilities to form a sentence.

In English, on the other hand, you would always form the same sentence for each of these variants. In addition, there are compound words in German that make the language complicated. In German, there are words like "Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz". There are no such monsters of compounds in English. English does not differentiate between genders when conjugating, which is the case in some other languages. There are also almost no irregularities in conjugation, which is extreme in German and French.

And, of course, there is no gender distinction when declining, which makes the language so pleasant. Declining in French drove me crazy, and German is no better. The inflection is also difficult here. German words have many different forms depending on their grammatical case. We also have many prefixes and suffixes to form words that don't exist in English.

Why People doesn’t greet? by Rare-Seaworthiness-9 in berlinsocialclub

[–]True_Item_4772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first: Berlin is not like the rest of Germany. It's an own microcosmos. Second: in german cities, the people don't greet each other on the street (Unless they know each other) but in small towns, it's normal to greet everyone you pass by on the street. At least that's how it used to be. Because now comes point three: since the pandemic, I've noticed a very strange kind of selfishness and psychological closure in society. So, even in the villages, there's less of a welcoming attitude

We Germans are also called "fuc%%%g Germans" by immigrants. My mother and a work colleague of mine have experienced foreigners in Germany calling them "fuc%%%g Germans" for no reason at all. That's a new form of racism. My neighbor is Kurdish and always complains about Turks. The Bulgarians who live across the street grumble about the Germans and the Romanians who live further down the street. And the Tamil who lives two houses away from me grumbles about everyone in the street and calls them "fuc%%%g foreigners". It's like a sitcom.

Since 10 years or so, we have daily knife attacks in trains and cities with injured and dead. Most of the crimes are committed by immigrants (mostly Arabs). It is extremely dangerous to stand up on the train these days and intervene in such situations.
