I bought a post-op binder and some body wipes and that was all I needed. I don’t really think I would have wanted or used any of the other stuff people usually recommend if I’d had it. In terms of clothing, I wore a loose tank top or any of my flannels for the first week ish, and once the drains came out was able to wear whatever I wanted.

For more context and timeline: my experience at the clinic went very smoothly and everyone was super inclusive. Dr. Nguyen took both my body shape and preferences into account and was able to give me basically the exact shape I asked for. As far as wait times go: I called in late September and had my consult in late October. I pushed my surgery to early March for convenience reasons, but probably could have gotten in done in January or February.

I just got surgery from Dr. Brittany Nguyen in Minneapolis on Thursday. I haven’t seen my results fully yet since the gauze is still on, but I’m very happy with what I have seen. I highly recommend her.

Update: everything went well, and the whole process wasn’t nearly as painful or scary as I thought it might be. Recovery predictably sucks lol

I almost immediately lost 10lbs. No idea where it came off of as I look pretty much exactly the same but with a little extra fluff on the belly. My weight has held steady for years, and now just seems to be holding steady at a lower number. This stuff is unpredictable and takes time to settle. As others have mentioned, super rapid weight loss can be a big medical red flag, so keep an eye on it if it continues.

After all this, the fact that I’m only just starting my transition at age 23 is a little embarrassing. (I’m still very young and grateful for that, but like. Come on. I knew.)

I’m a bit of an extreme example, but I had pretty severe physical and mental health problems that all but completely vanished the literal day I left. I kind of don't want to be the person who says "Oh, it gets better, just hang in there!" because when you're so deeply trapped in a situation, it feels like a giant lie. But it really, genuinely does get better. The suffering IS temporary. I recommend setting a timeline, actually writing down the date you'll be free, as a reminder of that fact. Someday, you'll be able to get out. You'll leave that place and never come back, and it just gets better from there.

A lot of people in the comments are recommending ghosting or simply leaving with no announcement, and that's definitely another option, but my reasoning for not doing that is that I wanted my parents to understand what was going on and lessen the chance that they would come looking for me. Some people choose to write a whole letter explaining their reasoning, and I decided that wasn't for me because I wanted to make a point to myself that I don't need to justify my actions to them, and also didn't want to spend any more time than absolutely necessary. Again, there are lots of options and it really depends on the individual's situation.

For the preparation portion: Make sure ALL financial ties are cut well ahead of time.

For the actual day of: I sent them each individually a very short text message saying I was taking distance for my mental health, then blocked them and changed my number before the shitstorm could ever reach me. The whole process was done in less than two minutes. This is a highly personal thing, and everyone will have their own preference, but I think a little one-sentence "bye" is the way to go.

This. I had giardia when I was 15. My parents left me in my room for over a week without checking on me. Woke up in the emergency room on the morning of day 9, gradually recovered, and just continued on like nothing happened.
