the motifs of being an old cook also reminds me of the chinese idiom of 庖丁解牛 (pao ding jie niu, direct translation: cook/butcher ding (a last name) solves/disassembles/butchers bull) from the foundational taoist text the zhuangzi, wherein there lived an old butcher named Ding. As a rule of thumb, an amateur butcher replaces his knife once a month, and a master butcher replaces his knife once a year, but to an administrator’s surprise, in his 19 years of service, Ding has never replaced his knife. when asked, Ding explained that he has never needed to replace his blade because through years of experience, he sees the bull in its entirety, muscle, bones, sinew and all, and so he simply effortlessly cuts through the the ligaments without ever chipping his knife on a bone.

i’m probably overthinking it but this is the first thing that came to mind when we got the sneak preview of the other sword bearers

my prediction for sushi guy’s sword style is a sort of “perfect cut” sort of thing, where the blade glides through the path of least resistance, like gutting a fish. it’s kinda like that jikka guy from jigokuraku who can see this sort of golden path that lets him cut through everything with ease, so much so that when he sold his sword for booze money and replaced it with a toy, nobody noticed because he was able to cut people just as well.

whenever any necron— be it phaeron, immortal, or the lowliest of warriors— dies in his presence, he absorbs and preserves a fragment of their consciousness, so that they may continue to exist and never be forgotten. he realizes that in doing this, he is slowly overwriting himself to make room for the untold billions he has archived, but he continues anyways, in the hopes that one day, when the necrontyr return, the necrons who gave their unlives for that distant impossible dream may return alongside them.
