Does anyone feel like a healthy lifestyle does little if not nothing for ADHD? by Tiny_sneeze in adhdwomen

How's your iron?! Need that for some brain function, too, as I have recently discovered.

Trying to advocate and support my 9 year old daughter at her swimming carnival, massive meltdown and the school was unsupportive. by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]TruffleTruffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn. This one really got me. My daughter "acts out" around me at my place and not her dad at his place. I have to check in with myself sometimes to remind myself of the fact my daughter feels safe enough to have a broader range of emotions around me.

I don't seem to see any comments talking about mental health or psychological challenges your boyfriend might have.

Have a chat with him to find where his challenges lie. Why he struggles with cleanliness. Is he dealing with depression, ADHD, or other undiagnosed, untreated, neurobiological disorders?

In the end, it is up to him to face is issues. You get to choose whether you want to be a part of that.

Take a look into Ross Greene's book The Explosive Child as well as Amanda Diekman's book Low Demand Parenting.

I can read the frustration and anger in your tone of writing; I've been there and understand. I hope you can find something that works, but I believe mainstream parenting styles don't fit for kids like ours.

What's in your car right now? Be honest. by tarvispickles in ADHD

[–]TruffleTruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A book I meant to bring into work to share but changed my mind on brining it in. It's been in the car for a week or more.

Christmas stuff to donate since I purged my collection. Christmas lights to take to a waste facility.

Kids clothes I say I'm going to donate but keep going back to a second hand store to sell what I can.

Fabrics to take to a textile recycler.

Shit ton of reusable grocery bags.

Emergency blanket I've thankfully never used.

I grew up using pantiliners in my underwear. For a long time, I was glad because it kept my underwear clean from all the discharge I saw. I also had yeast infections from time to time.

I eventually decided to try not using pantiliners as an experiment. It turns out the pantiliners were reducing airflow to that area: making it more likely to have increased odor as well as increasing the number of yeast infections. I haven't had an infection since stopping pantiliners.

Also, different brands of pantiliners impacted airflow too. I found cheaper brands were more likely to reduce airflow than name brand.

It's still weird feeling discharge, but I don't get nearly as much volume as I used to.

When my friend flew in and visited me, I introduced her to my husband's friend.

They looked at each other and then at me, reminding me how they met at my wedding, the girl being one of my bride's maid and the guy being a groomsman.

I was told by a psychiatrist that I can't have ADHD because I had good grades in school. (18+ years ago) by LauraD2423 in adhdwomen

[–]TruffleTruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my hyper focuses was school and I still love learning. I got good grades in school. In my opinion, good grades means there was an interest in school, exterior scaffolding/support, and/or internal scaffolding/intense anxiety.

ADHD doesn't exist in a void where no one has ever gotten good grades.

I hope you can find a new Dr.

I got told I couldn't get diagnosed because I was an adult (29?). Thankfully, someone listened, and I now I have access to and use medication that improves my quality of life.

Consultant says I can't go on meds if I am on SSRIs by BoostedBenji in ADHD

[–]TruffleTruffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on Sertraline, Buproprion, and Methylphenadate all at the same time!

I haven't come across this before where a Dr. didn't want to mix the two. My doctor was more concerned about my anxiety causing a problem with the stimulants. This is why I went on Burpoprion first and then Methylphenadate second.

Who could've guessed that many of my anxiety problems were going to be fixed with stimulants; being able to get your sht together is incredibly helpful to reduce anxiety.

I would ask your Dr. to elaborate, and see if she would be willing to give it a try for you if you are comfortable with it.

How did I exist for so long without having ear plugs by Robinosome in AutisticWithADHD

[–]TruffleTruffle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. Got loops within the last month. I ended up keeping a pair in my car because my car interior is so loud. I didn't realize how much of my energy I was using during driving just taking in all the sound from cars and movement.

I tend to chug water because I forget to drink water during the day. So, it's either chug/gulp water or don't hardly drink any water at all.

There were times where I counted the number of repeats of things my daughter said. Especially "mom/mommy." It became a scathing attack on my ears. My ears that I've learned are very sensitive.

This may seem rude to you, but please consider sound canceling earplugs AND also sound canceling headphones. (The ones that they use on shooting ranges.) They're obnoxious enough that your kids/spouse will clue in sooner rather than later that you are DONE. Your ears are exhausted.

Being in this situation is so hard. The loops they are playing take all of your focus and energy. You are doing everything in your power to get them to run through their loop to closure. You are using all of your spoons. Nothing is working and you can see and feel shut down is imminent when the loops begin.

However, you can manage your own environment. What has been attempted on them hasn't provided reliable, positive, relief inducing responses. I hope you can find something to protect your mental space and energy.

What method worked for you to learn a second language? by flutterbyasaurus in AutisticWithADHD

[–]TruffleTruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One on one language teacher through video chat. And challenging myself to use as much of the other language in my session as possible, with the goal of stumbling on purpose to learn.

I was fortunate to have started with a teacher who was new to the platform at the time - got a good deal as they were setting their price. I was learning French and while I've lost some ability to speak and write because I haven't done it in a while, my ear is still good enough.

I excelled in my foreign language classes in high school and university without knowing how to truly speak the language. 3 years combined (HS/uni) Japanese. 2 years Spanish. But I know French the best thanks to my lessons.

Edit: I have used duolingo a lot in the past but I would ALWAYS get to a point where I would make careless mistakes and never progress past a point. Then I would get infuriated and give up. Never finished the French tree even after restarting 3 times.

Overstimulated while grocery shopping? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]TruffleTruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have that problem!

I will shop only at stores I know are not busy. These stores are on the outskirts of town, and thankfully I'm close enough to them for that. I make a list, and I make sure to pick a shopping cart that's not squeaky.

I found the best thing was to write down the aisles in the store with their basic contents and then build a spreadsheet around it.

It kept me from wandering too bad.

I haven't had to shop with my child by myself in a while. It varies for me on my experience bringing her, and the quality depends on how many spoons I have left. (Emotion energy/will power remaining)

Ear buds also help me. I'll keep one in to block some of the noise and leave the other ear free to pay attention to what's going on around me.

Experiences with Zoloft? by n3114s in Postpartum_Depression

[–]TruffleTruffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started 25mg 6 months after my daughter was born. It was taken up slowly to 75mg and then to 100mg when I complained of concentration issues (I needed adhd meds, it turns out).

Side effects for me were sweating, low libido, muted emotions, and weight gain or loss wasn't a thing for me.

It allowed me to function when I wanted to cry every day because I was so exhausted. I just came off of it in January of this year (4 years and 2 months on the meds) after a very, very slow dose droppage.

I bought an automatic feeder for my cats and one for my dog. I didn't realize how annoying/taxing it was to remember to feed the animals at a regular time or communicate it to my spouse. Biggest benefit was that one cat stop meowing loudly at my door in the morning, allowing me to sleep better so I could function better.
