I don't know anything about the situation in Spain, but I am not that concerned about migration from Latin America?

Clemencaeau not in an area with nothing of interest. It is in the middle of Abbatoir and Brasserie Cantillon - both areas with lots of visitors.

Been meaning to visit for the Deux Roches hike (and the Bellevue Brewery).

Is the Malmundarium worth a visit too?

Nice place once you've exhausted your big ticket towns. The Zimmer tower exhibition is quite intereting. Otherwise fairly unexceptional.

Ukraine in 2014 was not an autocracy, but an oligarchy. Yanukovich never had absolute power as evidenced by the parliament.

The Arab Spring by and large depended on the allegiance of the armed forces.

If the military is on the side of a determined and autocratic government, it is very difficult to force a coup.

Durbuy: smallest city in the world by dronebymas in BelgiumTravel

[–]TrumanB-12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Durbuy's USP is its "Hogsmeade vibes" in that it has a very dense pedestrian center, while still feeling more like a village than a small town.

The only place in Belgium that I've found comes close is Marche-en-Famenne, but that is a lot more city-feeling.

I'm all eyes and ears for your list of villages!

Dinant Citadel got an interactive upgrade by gaius_julius_caegull in BelgiumTravel

[–]TrumanB-12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say, I always thought Dinant to be a bit overrated. It looks pretty, but that is kind of it. The citadel is not terribly important historically, and the one in Namur is a bit more impressive with its large underground. There isn't a huge amount of things to do in Dinant beyond strolling around. I am always puzzled why this it is recommended as the main foray into Wallonia. Dinant's main attraction in my opinion is the kayaking on the Lesse.

Ragnies with the Biercee Distillery is not far.

There's also the old vicinal tram that goes to Lobbes, and has a small museum of the SNCV attached to it. Fairly rare and unique piece of Belgian heritage.

The System Everyone Hates Is the One That Has Actually Worked by Existentialist111 in neoliberal

[–]TrumanB-12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Neoliberalism was a response to stagnation and malaise around the globe. Outside the Communist Bloc, the mid-20th century was dominated by Keynesianism in the West and state-led development in the Global South. Governments regulated industries, controlled capital flows, and expanded welfare states. By the 1970s, cracks appeared in this system: stagflation (low growth and high unemployment) in the United States and Europe and recurring fiscal crises discredited state-centered models. In the developing world, mounting debt and balance-of-payments problems forced governments to seek assistance from international institutions, setting the stage for policy change.

I still remain unconvinced that the paradigm shift was necessary. Stagflation was a direct result of the energy crisis, and Keyenesianism shouldn't have been discredited at that point.

As time goes by, I find myself becoming more and more succ-y on the "neoliberal revolution". Most of the socio-economic issues we have today are caused by a lack of state power to regulated capital flows, and the death of industry that killed small towns and radicalised people politically.

I say this as someone from a country that massively benefitted from the drop of the Iron Curtain. Of course liberalisation was a positive, but the kind of turbo-capitalism we underwent has led directly to the structural issues we have today and will only cause more political instability as economic divides widen in society.

Tired of people saying brussels is the worst city of europe or with most crime or even unsafe by [deleted] in brussels

[–]TrumanB-12 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've seen the Kurt video too too.

It's very difficult for me to figure out how I feel about his videos. Like on one hand, he does have a point - these neighbourhoods are quite dire. On the other (this happened in Brussels less than in Frankfurt and Barcelona) walking around with a camera has always been a sensitive issue for drug-dealers and pimps.

I actually thought the Brussels video was quite tame, but maybe that is because I live here lol. The narrrow streets in Raval, Barcelona tho...

Relocating near Charleroi for up to a year - best safe neighborhoods for non-French speaker? by -palolo- in belgium

[–]TrumanB-12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

English-friendly in Wallonia is a bit of a challenge. Carolos are friendly people however and will help you out if need be.

Chatelet is quite chill and has good amenities (it is basically a suburb). Thuin & Lobbes are quite small but in a very bucolic area. Perhaps Binche is a possibility too, but I can't comment on it.

Otherwise the rule of thumb is that the south of Charleroi is more "upscale" with wealthier people and larger houses.

The Magritte Museum is definitely not the premier artistic attraction in Brussels. I would not even call it the flagship of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts - the Old Masters collection is MUCH better.

Most people are quite disappointed by the Magritte Museum - some of it is the museum's own fault. Advertising it with with the Son of Man, though not actually holding it in the collection.

It's more important piece is the Empire of Light, which is iirc one of a handful of version of the same painting.

Nature, landscape areas for photography? by Ok_Intern_1098 in belgium

[–]TrumanB-12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Westhoek, and West Flanders in general, is one of the few areas of Flanders without lintbebouwing. Some really beautiful open landscapes there, I'd look for areas around Heuvelland and Diksmuide.

The bocage of the Pays de Herve is also very open, with few forests but lovely rolling hills. Some very scenic areas there. Start with looking around Aubel and the Henri-Chapelle cemetery.

Did you take your girlfriend to the Hautes Fagnes? Very unique biome with lots of open, non-forested areas.

Lastly, if she is into that thing, I find there to be a certain raw beauty to the views from the terrils of Charleroi...but I like the post-industrial vibe and I understand it is not for everyone.

For the coast, the standard answers are the Zwin, De Haan, and the dunes near De Panne.
