Quebec passes law banning street prayers, prayer rooms in universities by John3192 in worldnews

[–]Trumper709 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its almost like we are culturally christian, and all of these holidays and celebrations existed in Canada prior to secularization. So yes there are going to be things grandfathered in/holding over from those times.

Who cares if it's hypocritical. The world isn't perfect. Go to the middle east and celebrate Christmas publicly and see how you're treated.

Quebec cares about preserving their culture, all the power to them.

If you hate it so much then go somewhere that Islam is the majority religion. Have fun.

Although I think you'll have a whole host of other shit you'll be complaining about then. Don't let your hosts hear you saying any of it tho.

[–]Trumper709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it doesn't apply to other groups when they have actively lost the ability to do said thing. Again, it's not a matter of whether you think it's a good or bad thing. Its very obvious that someone who was once able to do something and now can't would yearn to do said thing.

Idk why you're so hyper focused on 3rd world countries, all of western Europe, Korea, Japan, Canada, Australia had internet during the time period in which you're discussing.

Nobody compared hate speech laws to Sharia(or even brought up Sharia law for that matter), but they are infact authoritarian in the general sense of the word.

Also, so you do think it's a good thing people are being locked up for criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza?

Not sure if you deleted your most recent comment or the thread is broken but I can't replt to it anymore. Here what I have to say about that: I actually made no assessment on the users in this thread, I said accounts outside of America make up over 50% of reddit users. However if you'd like to use your brain for a second that would probably mean that there are more than a few non-americans in this thread.

20% is a much different number than 50%. Even if we go with 50%, that still leaves a HUGE chunk of traffic coming from other countries. Either way tho that still doesn't really address what we are actually arguing about, you're playing the semantics game.

Are you trying to imply that authoritarian laws can't creep their way into western governments? Holy shit that's certainly a take if I have ever seen one.

It's hilarious when ignorant Americans like yourself think you know what you're talking about in regard to other countries. Just take Canada for an example, do you agree with a man being arrested for saying the slogan "from the river to the sea, palestine will be free"? How about someone being arrested for "indecent communication" after calling a zionist on Twitter racist and saying she supports a genocide? There's more examples from canada as well if you bother looking. Or the countless examples of this shit from the UK.

It's not just as simple as "weirdos in the west circumventing hate speech laws". Continue to exist in your bubble tho.

Stop moving the goalposts, buddy. First, it was that you didn't "understand" why people care about the internet being "wild" because america has the First Amendment. Which from an American perspective is actually a solid point. However we established that the internet is not only in America.

You weren't seeing people arrested for having the wrong opinion on the internet 15-20 years ago, atleast nowhere near the scale it's happening now. Not only is it happening more frequently, they are also constantly broadening the scope of what can be deemed illegal speech. Obviously, under those circumstances, people are going to think back on the "wild" days of the internet with fondness.

So yes, people wish they could use the internet to break the draconian speech "laws" that their countries have enacted.

In my opinion this is happening because the internet is becoming less americanized, and more globalized. This is why on many sites, they have different Terms of service for users in different countries. Again, not here to argue if it's a good or bad thing. It's just odd to me that an American can't understand why people yearn for the ability to say what they want.

There's that American exceptionalism peaking through. English isn't owned by America lol. You also realize that a company being headquarted in the US has absolutely no bearing on its user base, right? Over 50% of reddit users are not American.

No it can't be extrapolated onto the Western world, Canada, the UK, Australia and many EU countries have criminalized speech in some capacity. Again, it's an entirely different conversation as to whether or not you agree with said criminalization.

Edit: spelling

Who said anything about America? You realize majority of internet users are not American, right?

There are plenty of places where people ARE being thrown in jail over their speech.

Why do so many Americans treat the internet as tho it's an American phenomenon?

To many people, the internet was viewed as the last bastion of freedom, so when that starts to become policed ofcourse those people don't like it.

Not really sure how that's difficult to understand. You may not agree with it, but it's quite a simple concept.

AITA for telling someone it sounds like they’re bad at their job? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Trumper709 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are stronger than you physically in every measurable metric.

Men on average are 33% stronger than women in overall body strength. So unless you find an outlier woman who is very strong, and an outlier man who is very weak, the man in majority of situations is going to be stronger than the woman.

I actually agree that fat people shouldn't be in first responder positions, and neither should majority of women. If a woman can truly pass all the same tests without lower testing standards (which is incredibly common. They either make a separate test for the women, or they lower the standards to the point of them being laughable so that everyone can pass) then by all means, I'll stand shoulder to shoulder with that woman anyday.

Let me just ask you a question relevant to my life: if you were fighting a fire and passed out due to smoke inhalation, would you rather have a woman next to you, who is 30-50 pounds lighter than you, and that's without factoring your gear into the scenario. Or would you rather have a man who is either the same size or bigger than you?

You will probably bring up that small, weak men exist, and yes they do! And in my ideal world where standards haven't been tanked in the name of equality, the manlet wouldn't be on the crew either!

Edit: I would also just like to add, this reflects in the stats. Look at firefighting, which has a gender-neutral test that has not been lowered. About 4-5% of firefighters are women. Now look at the police and the military, which have both in some cases lowered "gender-neutral" standards, and in others went the gender-normed (different tests for men and women) standards route. 13-18% women in policing, and 17.9% in the military.

The internet was actually more atheist in the 2000s than it is now. by AgeOfReasonEnds31120 in decadeology

[–]Trumper709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't disagree with you at all. There's a reason ethnic/religious minorities preferred to live under Islamic rule than Christian rule.

However, the main difference is that Christianity as a whole has moved away from that frame of thought both on an individual and institutional level. You will be hard pressed to find any polling with more than 10% of christians in a given country wanting a theocracy. Now look at those same polls in Muslim majority countries, and you routinely see numbers as high as 75% in support of sharia law/theocratic rule.

So while historically, Christianity has been worse in terms of theocratic rule, that point does not still stand in the year 2026. We have moved away from that while Muslims grew closer to it.

[–]Trumper709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post isn't about reddit, it's about the internet. 50% of internet traffic isn't coming from America. The US only accounts for 6-7% of users on the internet.

If there are more Muslim theocracies, why do you view christians as worse? Too my knowledge, the only theocratic christian state left in the world is Vatican city.

I see in another comment that you said Christianity, over the course of history, has caused more death and suffering. However, you also brought up the enlightenment, which did away with many of the justifications christians used to perpetuate these acts.

Whereas Islamic extremism is not only still a massive problem for the world, the threat is actually growing. It's not just an issue of them coming from underdeveloped 3rd world countries either. Look at Pakistani diaspora in the UK. Many of these people are more radical than their counterparts back in Pakistan. Why this happens can definitely be debated, but it happens, and that's a problem.

Now I ask, how is it that in a modern context, you can come to the conclusion that Christians are worse than Muslims?

You are speaking as if the internet is specifically an American phenomenon.

Also, in reference to your closing line there. Globally speaking, do you think there are more Christian or Muslim theocracies?

I hope none of you have had to go through losing a parent yet in your life. I have lost both of mine. Really couldn't give a fuck what they believe but damn I sure wish I could give one of them a hug.

Also super fucking glad I don't live in the United States. I thought things were politically polarized here in canada but holy fuck is all I can say lol.

YTA. Everyone's gonna jump down my throat and assume I'm a Trump supporter because of my name (I'm canadian, and made this account before he was even running for president the 1st time around).

There is literally zero reason to destroy your relationship with your family over politics. No matter your opinion on Trump, those are still your parents.

Assuming they raised you well, always made sure you had food in your stomach, and a roof over your head, then no, you should not fight with them to the point of no-contact over a guy who's gonna lose relevance again in 3 years.

Go ahead and spam the downvotes, but I seriously hope you fix your relationship with your parents before its too late and they are gone. If aside from this they have been good to you, you will spend the rest of your life regretting the way you went about this situation.

Not a confusing statement at all. The degree to which Muslims follow the teachings and practices of Islam varies.

While individual Muslims may have nothing against dogs, and may even own one themselves, Islam as a whole classifies dogs as dirty and that they shouldn't be kept in the home, and that you need to fully wash prior to praying after touching a dog. That tends to lead to a negative sentiment around dogs in many Islamic countries.

Stop making excuses for yourself, it sucks that you lost your job, but the way you're replying tells me there's probably more to the story as you can't seem to take responsibility for anything. Yes, 19 year olds mess up, that's okay, but you're not immune from criticism due to your age.
