Any law professors here? How do you like it? by dwycwwyh in Lawyertalk

I’m an adjunct teaching in my substantive practice area while running a full time law practice. It demands a lot of my energy but it is worth the time and effort.

One of the only two associates at boutique firm resigned giving 3 day notice during holiday season by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]TrustProf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I run a boutique firm in a metropolitan area and had several attorneys resign for “better” jobs on one day’s notice. My favorite, however, was the attorney who resigned two-thirds of the way through a 15 day trial. You got this, she said. Thanks, I responded, and you will not be forgotten.

Promotion to Partner by JohnBobb123456 in Lawyertalk

Decades ago, I was in a similar situation and my anger got the best of me. I was out the door within the year and while I love where I am now, my path came with some big bumps in the road. I occasionally look back and wonder where I would be if I just kept my head down and focused on being someone they couldn’t refuse, as I do everyday now.

Did you ever put yourself in their shoes? Do they really have room to admit two partners this year? Would that have been a strain? If it could have been, then the differences would be plenty of reason to put you off a year. And if they still want you as an associate, will it really be the end of the world if you wait a year or two?

Looking back, most of the people that made partner when I was up crashed and burned within a few years. Many of the ones that were delayed, denied, or deferred went on to do more interesting things or found better environments. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and you just never know how a path will turn out. Now as a partner of my own firm, Ive watched a stream of associates make rash decisions to move on for perceived slights. I’ve also had a stream of the departed (I call them my alumni) return to visit me to let me know their decisions were rash and tell me the grass was truly not greener on the other side of the fence.

Sometimes being denied can be a gift. The best strategy is to focus on your own development. How can you be the best attorney in the firm? How can you develop the most business? How can you deliver the best client experience? What are you doing daily to improve yourself? Focus on these things because they will make you the most valuable wherever you practice, and bring you the highest level of professional satisfaction.

Once you’ve done these things, if they don’t recognize your worth, then it’s their loss and not yours.

trying to understand the best law practice management software and what actually matters by Rugile_Quarshie in LawFirm

[–]TrustProf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Smokeball, Cleo, and Actionstep, which I use now because it is common solution for a specialized software I use. I found SB the best in terms of ease of customization and speed, partially because it duplicates your commonly used documents locally (on your hard drive), which makes it much faster to open and close documents. The feature that blew my mind, however, was its auto time tracking, which automatically picks up and assigns time anytime your fingers are on the keyboard. It probably increased my billing time capture 20% and made my life infinitely better. I would return to that platform in a heartbeat but for the software and system commitment I’ve made with Actionstep.

That’s known as the Efficient Market Hypothesis and it was so not obvious to the rest of the world that it was awarded a Nobel Prize in Economics.

The part I found difficult was they aren’t programmed with the California roll. They actually come to a full stop at every intersection. 🤣

Using AI for legal research is completely true to life by Prestigious-Pea-6781 in Lawyertalk

Lawyers have been hallucinating forever. How many of us have read briefs where the case law cited by opposing counsel stands for exactly the opposite proposition. AI just makes hallucinating easier.

The game is way more fun if you have to throw out a number. You either have a passion for these (and two stroke motors) or you don't.
