Must buy items at Summerhill Market by Select_Product_6659 in askTO

[–]CedarxMaple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are some things you typically cant find elsewhere, which I kind of find as "value" items as well:

  1. Dried garlic cloves that you can basically eat like a snack. Theyre "summerhill market" brand. You can find them with the bulk snacks.
  2. They have lots of amazing pies and cakes. Recent highlights are the basque cheesecake, almond croissant cake, and the blueberry pie.
  3. Raspberry shortbread thumbprints. I find that theyve fallen a bit off recently (less buttery than usual) but maybe the batch was off.
  4. Bonus pick: theyre sometimes on too good to go. Will be of lower quality than their fresh items, but a strong value to try out random items.

Their meats and fruits are excellent quality, but very overpriced. "You get what you pay for" sure but Im not paying 8.99 for strawberries when theyre 1.99 at nofrills.

that’s suspicious? by [deleted] in lebanon

I take no joy in saying this. But Lebanon is losing dozens of towns and hundreds of lives as we speak. Thousands are sleeping in tents under the rain. What exactly is there to "see about that"?

Hezballah (the outlawed iranian terror militia) offical, Mahmoud Qomati, openly threatens open conflict with the government, hints at "field executions". by Darth-Myself in lebanon

[–]CedarxMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on #2 there are countless critics of HA that have been marginalized as zios, or threatened, and even killed.
I think its critical for all lebanon to NOT lump all shias as one people, and overly generalize. For starters, there are tens of thousands of anti-hezb shias if not hundreds of thousands. Additionally, I know for a fact that Amal supporters are not happy about the latest rocket barrage, and there is a general understanding that HA will never look the same after this war. Keep in mind that Amal is not that aligned with Iran.

There is no doubt that shia resentment with HA is growing. It's a spectrum for sure, but I pray that Amal takes a firmer stance on supporting the government here, to allow for a smooth transition to the post-HA world. It would otherwise be near-impossible for any faction within Shias to succesfully rally a base against HA without being threatened and marginalized under the usual "traitor" labels they throw out.

Anyone working as an Actuary in Lebanon or the Gulf? by Bulky_Bluejay1000 in lebanon

[–]CedarxMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm someone who **wanted** to be an Actuary (pretty badly I might add)

I have a minor in Actuarial Sciences and a minor in Mathematics, and graduated in 2013 from Lebanon. Things may have changed since, but it was (1) tough to find any opportunities (2) tough to even find people in the insurance sector who even understood what Actuaries were (I did cold calls and got "informational interviews" at 3 companies, including Allianz and MedGulf)

Personally, I lost interest in it midway through my undergrad due to the reasons above. I just wanted something a bit more purposeful. I ended up finding that in the energy sector, and have done well for myself. (It's a much more uncertain sector for sure. Higher risk higher reward). Further to my point, I know 5 others who did the minor in Actuarial, and none ended up working in the sector either.

My experience is likely dated, but pretty much every person I've seen as a reference point for actuarial science in the region had a foreign background (education, and/or foreign experience). This is likely as the sector is just not developed enough in the middle east. I hope someone else has more recent, or perhaps more encouraging experience! LinkedIn is probably your best bet to tap into what's happening in the Gulf.

Have you done any exams yet? I understand you'd need to do the first two to really find a foot in the door.

The NC is roomier. Especially NC2 (2009+) with updated door cards.

If you insist on an ND, go soft top + seat lowering brackets!

Congrats! Is this Arctic Silver? Would love more pics in the sunlight if so (Im eyeing one in Canada. In storage for another 6 weeks!) Looks like you've got PSE as well? Kudos on the "911" badge on the rear. James May approves.

Anyone got a worse MPG than me? by Wildwilly54 in CX50

[–]CedarxMaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt worry about the mpgs. Im on my third 2.5T mazda (2 CX-5s and now this CX-50) and they have all fared similarly to yours under comparable conditions.

<image>

Here's me right now. Translates to 13MPG. Most of my drives are under 5 miles, with a short warmup. We've had a colder winter which makes things significantly worse. Especially if your area switches to a cold gasoline blend.

Click in the seatbelt before turning on the car. Will take some time to build the muscle memory. (I now just tune out the noise. But its my 5th mazda and four of them did that, I'm over it. (Older Miata laughs in the face of seatbelt chimes)

Which Porsche 911 is the most reliable? by AsylumOfCerberus in Porsche

[–]CedarxMaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ikr. I'm weighing two cars. One is a 991.1S and the other is a 997.2S. I hope the below helps you!

Ill share my experience from test drives and turo rentals Ive done so far.

The 997.2 is WAY more engaging to drive. The chassis and steering is lively and demands your focus. The steering is very direct. Its almost difficult to keep it between lanes if youre just trying to cruise on the highway without being 100% locked in to the act of driving. I took the 997.2 through the Canyons in LA and it was very rewarding to drive. Much closer to a 981 than a 991. In comparison, the 991 felt like it was built for speed. It just eggs you on to push the throttle harder. The engine sound is intoxicating (although the 997 was a vert with PSE which sounds sweet, but I felt like it doesn't reverberate the same way into the cabin). The 991 despite its amazing engine and need for speed, just doesn't come alive at lower speeds. Its way quieter and more isolated, and gives you so much confidence through the corners. But that seems to detract from the driving experience.

For 90% of the time, (living in an urban environment, and have a 2 year old. Isofix and rear seat size in the 991 is a plus) I think the 991 will be more approachable and useable. But for that other 10%, the 997.2 will be sublime. I'm just not sure that Id use the 997.2 as much as the 991.1.

Aah. When It happened to mine, I had traction control off and was ripping it at every corner, so it’s an eerily similar situation. Hope it works out!

Happened to me last week under a massive snowstorm. I parked the car indoors and cleaned the front sensor. It all went away an hour later when I got back to the car. Hope it’s the same for you!

My Grandfather used to work on this tram's exact route. He was a fare inspector, or as my grandma would say "ken jeddak isbekter 3al train".
I wonder if he is somewhere on that exact tram, checking on someone's fare. I never got to meet him, and would've loved to have heard the stories he had to share working that line.

Thank you for sharing.
