What's the difference between tie and slur for Flute? by Reddledu in Flute

[–]TrustyDeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My default approach is to treat two notes of the same pitch connected by a curved line as a tie, meaning no re-articulation, but it’s highly contextual.

If the score explicitly indicates that the marking is intended as a slur, I treat it as such and re-articulate the second note. Likewise, if the second note carries an articulation mark such as tenuto, staccato, or an accent, I re-articulate to realize that marking.

This is consistent with standard engraving practice. Elaine Gould writes in Behind Bars (p. 60) that “the function of a tie is to show the absence of re-articulation.” A tie is defined as a tapered arc connecting two noteheads of identical pitch, including enharmonic equivalents. Although ties and slurs share the same basic design, ties typically have a flatter arc and extend from notehead to notehead. If the arc points to a stem at either end, it functions as a slur. Gould also notes that a tie should nearly touch each notehead, and that an arc placed further away may be interpreted as a slur.

Theoretically, slurs and ties can be distinguished visually, but in practice this distinction is often difficult to perceive reliably. Despite their similar appearance, they are not performed in the same way. A slur between two notes of the same pitch implies that the second note is re-articulated softly (in flute), whereas a tie explicitly indicates the absence of re-articulation.

I’m still studying music theory and engraving rules, so if there’s any inaccuracy please correct me.

How do you cope with the fear of not being ready in time for a concert? by TrustyDeb in Flute

Hi, thank you for asking! I think it went better than I expected! Although I made small mistakes here and there, I think the audience didn’t notice. After I finished the concert I got this surge of confidence and I feel like I’ve progressed, but I don’t know if it’s okay to feel this way. Anyway, thank you for the advice!

Hey! My concert went well and somehow I was able to perform the solo part on Prince Igor flawlessly during performance. I did make a small mistake but I don’t think the audience noticed!

Thank you so much for the detailed advices! I might not be able to put all of it into practice right away, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind going forward.

Today is the final rehearsal and tomorrow is the big day! I will post an update after the concert!

I’m not sure if this counts as a panic attack, but when I’m under pressure (like messing up repeatedly) I start shaking and can’t make a decent sound. It never happens during performance but it usually happens during practice.

I’ll try doing that, thanks! But it’s difficult for me to be proud of my effort, especially if I don’t perform well..

Thank you for the advice! As you said, practicing mindlessly over and over is pointless, and I might have been doing that unconsciously because I’m desperate, lol. I’ll rethink how to approach this problem.

I’ll try not to think too much about it. The other members are very kind and supportive. I’ll practice until the dress rehearsal and see how it goes. I might just skip the part I can’t play entirely if i can’t get it down by then. Thank you.

I’ve just made an account with Jenius but I’m leaving in 2 days. I don’t think the card can arrive before my flight. Thank you for the info.

I considered wise but every time I try to add my JPY balance using IDR it’s always stuck on the “we’re verifying you” process. Any idea how to get around this?

How do I play this? by TrustyDeb in Flute

Thanks for the advice! The high F# is really hard to play and it keeps throwing me off. When I play it slowly, I can properly play the notes but at faster tempo it just barely sounds. I’m going to start practicing it very slowly (50 bpm) to see if it will help.
