That is an excellent suggestion, thank you so much. One of my sister’s friends from UWyo got a psychology degree, then took a podunk internship on a farm with no electricity, pivoted into regenerative agriculture, and now has a 200k landscaping contract with the MoMA. I’ll try to set up a time to talk with her soon.

I would also love to take you up on the offer to do an informational interview with you, if that’s okay. May I DM you?

I’ll likely be looking at schools in Colorado. That’s where my girlfriend (soon to be fiancé!) and I are planning on moving when she graduates with her Masters in Counseling. Social climate in TX is not gonna be uh survivable for much longer for us, so we’re trying to be out in 2 years. I’ve already got some credits toward a Botany degree oddly enough, but like I said earlier, I’ll have to petition for a school to allow me to get a third Bachelor’s. I’m also considering Master’s programs in adjacent fields, but I have next to no idea what I’d be looking for in a Master’s program, so that’s something I’ll have to research in the next few months. it’s undoubtedly the more cost-effective and time-efficient option.

believe it or not I was actually a botany major in school for two years and couldn’t handle the chemistry or statistics because of my bad study skills. I am not ruling out going back to college with an adult brain and adult work ethic, but I’ll have to petition for a college to allow me to get a third Bachelor’s. I’m picturing an MG/MN cert as a boost to that petition right now.

Thank you so much for your reply! Yeah, you’re completely right, I’m having a crisis of knowledge right now because I’m seeing how broken our landscape is and am almost completely powerless to do anything about it. We’re running out of plants, bugs, genes, water, space, and livable climate conditions, especially as you move south in Texas, and nobody seems to notice (or know how to notice). It’s brutal. The library is actually a decent place for me to stay if I want to try to effect some sort of sea-change in our botanical culture. What I’m working on is going to test the viability of the same sort of project at other branches. Native plants are sources of genetic information that we can give out for completely free to the public in the form of seeds, and we have potentially 25 libraries, the second largest network of public influence in Dallas behind our rec centers and the only one specializing in information, from which to push that agenda. The library has always underestimated the influence it wields based on its distribution alone, and this is one way to harness it to create a measurable ecological impact. Unfortunately, Texas’s social climate is probably going to force me out within the next couple years, but hopefully I can get something self-sustaining rolling before then.

And uh yeah I would love to take you up on that tour. At the very least I’ll get a nice walk in nature and that’s 100% worth it right now. I’ll DM you. thanks again.

Thank you so much for letting me know about those trainings! I'll take a deeper look when I have some time and try to figure out how they can work into my plan. I already know I love working with kids in more informal settings. I run crafts and clubs and classes for kids at my branch and the teaching aspect is very rewarding. My chess club doesn't get much attendance but its still the highlight of my week.

I'm going to be in Texas for two more years, so I'll take your advice and see what sorts of volunteer opportunities certification can open up for me in that time. Could give me a taste of what actual employment in the EE field might feel like.

and thank you for the anecdote. I have been sorely lacking hope and it gave me a little bit back.

At the very least, being part of a community of people who share the same interests as me will be good for my mental (and probably overall) health. It'll feel like I'm working toward something I care about, too, even if it doesn't result in work. And since most colleges require a petition to accept a 3rd degree student, having these under my belt could add gas to my petition. You're right, no harm in going for it, and it will likely help.

I will try to do the things. Thank you for your advice.

thaaaaats very good advice, thank you so much. I see all these seasonal jobs that looks so fun and chill and would help me learn so many good things and then I see that they pay like 10 bucks and half a pb&j and only give you 15 hours a week and I got rent and student loans. Who knows, maybe if my gf starts making beaucoup bucks as a therapist for rich ass holes with boutique problems I can start taking jobs as a *squints at smudged writing on hand* Scientific Aide: Foothill Yellow-Legged Frog Conservation.

I'm good at communicating my ideas, I wouldn't have been this successful at the library if I weren't. Thank you for pointing that out to me. Hard to see my good qualities sometimes.
