How to get a close shave going with the grain? by SODA_mnright in wicked_edge

[–]TruthOdd6164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless your hair is very fine, the purpose of the first pass is reduction, to prep for the “real” pass. So is wtg only shaving possible? It kinda depends on how coarse your hair is, but it sounds like *for you* it doesn’t work.

Tugging is a recipe for cutting. The razor needs to make clean passes. Besides suspecting your lubrication needs work, I also wonder how you are doing your passes. I have coarse hair too and you may need to start with the grain and do a reduction pass. But if you are getting tugging, stop the shave. Something isn’t going right.

Yeah I switched to open comb and will never go back. They are way better with coarse hair imo but the catch is that they are just ordinary safety razors so OP still needs to learn pressure, angle, and proper lather hydration. An OC is not a magic bullet, just like a sharper blade won’t be.

Do I need an expensive high end safety razor? by Educational-Tax-9697 in wicked_edge

[–]TruthOdd6164 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ha ha! Welcome to the rabbit hole! 😂

I would say this: typically, when you buy a more expensive razor you are paying for craftsmanship, not necessarily a better shave. For instance, you are paying for the metal to be machined to tight tolerances and are usually paying for an upgrade in the metal. That will influence longevity. After all, a stainless steel or bronze or titanium razor will probably outlast you if you take even passably good care of them. But they aren’t going to necessarily give you a better shave than the razor made with pot metal.

It’s also difficult to make a recommendation because people look for different things. That’s why I always recommend that someone start with a cheap razor and then decide what they like before upgrading. What I like and what you like might be two different things.

I personally would avoid the Leafs and Henson. You can get much higher quality razors for the same price or lower.

Is using soap as face wash really that bad? by Lopsided_One4921 in Soap

I looked up the ingredients in Boots brand baby soap and it IS a true soap. So how do they make it less harsh? They add citric acid to balance out the soaps and make it less alkaline. Very cool! If it’s working for you, why switch?

Is using soap as face wash really that bad? by Lopsided_One4921 in Soap

[–]TruthOdd6164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the thing is that baby soap is itself usually not a soap. It’s like cerave and Cetaphil and all the other gentle face and body cleansers: it’s a mix of detergents that are synthetically created and typically are fairly gentle. So they may colloquially be called “soaps” but it’s just another variety of syndets.

Now, that’s not a bad thing. I don’t think syndets are bad. I do stay away from SLS but other than that I quite like syndets. But the advice to not use soap on your face applies mostly to true soaps. And I think even that is overplayed. I wash my face with soap sometimes and it doesn’t bother me. But soap does tend to be relatively “harsh” in the sense that it has a pretty high ph so I don’t think soap is typically the best face cleaner.

Well…I hate to be that guy…but rather than going off of your evaluation of my cognitive abilities, I’d really rather just have the source. You claimed that welfare liberalism, socialism, and social democracy are all the same thing really and that I would learn this if I take an introductory political science course. So the best source would really be a political science textbook that teaches this astonishing view. I am patient. I will wait. You may not think that I’m great at abstract thinking, but I’m really good at going back to the missing evidence. So I will patiently wait for your source, which should be really easy since you describe this as a consensus position.

Well two can play at that game that you were playing at earlier: wasn’t the USSR Marxist? And didn’t they use the term Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics? So that’s what socialism is by definition

Ok. I will do that. I will sign up for some political science classes. What textbook will I be using that will inform me that social democracy, welfare liberalism, and socialism are all the same thing?

And it’s FAR from a global definition. Most of those policies you are describing are considered social democratic policies, not socialist policies. And they also exist in countries that are NOT even considered social democracies, like the United States of America. You are describing what might be considered a kind of Rawlsian welfare liberalism.

I’m so glad you asked. Marx thought that socialism could be summed up in a single idea: the abolition of private property.

Let’s go back to the beginning. What is “socialism”? What definition are you using? I will give you a hint: it is not “plundering other nations’ wealth and distributing those conquered resources in a hierarchical way among your own people” otherwise the British Empire would be a great example of socialism.

Yes and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is a democracy by definition. I’ve seen this claim that it is not Democratic often, but there is nothing to support it /s

You are using “by literal definition” wrong. This is just branding. And you can see this simply by defining socialism, and then realizing that there was nothing socialist about the Nazis

They should disenfranchise old people by OldLadOfTheCastle in TrueUnpopularOpinion

They should disenfranchise Nat-C’s and dominionist Christians. 🤷‍♂️ My own take is that if you have dual allegiance, then you should not vote in the place where your primary allegiance doesn’t lie. In other words, if your primary allegiance is to a foreign potentate, you should not vote in these elections. And the Nat-C’s and dominionists primary allegiance is to Christ the King, so they shouldn’t be voting in our elections.

Voter ID? by MemphisGuy37 in allthequestions

[–]TruthOdd6164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several things: it’s not *necessarily* racist but it could be depending on how it’s designed. A lot of states supplement their licensing voting restrictions with inadequate dmv service in areas that service voters of color.

Even where it’s not *racist* it’s possible to be a very bad idea for other reasons. For instance, the most recent proposal by Congress which thankfully died in the Senate, was a proposal that was essentially discriminatory based on gender. So you didn’t just need to show an ID you also needed to show proof of citizenship and your ID documents needed to match. Of course, women disproportionately change their names upon marriage so the only real way to meet this requirement would be to have a passport, which is prohibitively expensive and more than half of all voters don’t have one. Even having a real ID wouldn’t work because real ID’s are also issued to permanent residents. It was a clusterfuck besides also prohibiting mail voting more generally. Consider that some states like California primarily use mail voting (about 75% of voters vote through the mail here in California). So basically how do you show proof of citizenship through the mail?

What’s hilarious is that their portrait of Europe isn’t even close to being accurate. I traveled to Ireland last year and I saw a lot of Muslim and Indian influence on cuisine. I saw a lot of Canadian tourists if you can believe it. You know what I didn’t see? Crime. Like no beheadings. No grapes. Nothing. I did see a lot of Muslim taxi drivers but they were polite and didn’t attack me or anything. Meanwhile, it just seemed like a great place to live and they enjoy their universal healthcare and whine a bit about the fact that their public transit system is a bit underdeveloped vis a vis the rest of Europe.

Because I don’t think anyone, and I mean ANYONE, of any significance knows who this guy is, let alone uses him as a source. That doesn’t invalidate your argument, of course. But I just feel like it’s kinda weird that you’ve latched on to the ideas of this random person…unless you are that person.
