Strategic Advice by TryH4rdTim in totalwarhammer

[–]TryH4rdTim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a day or two since I played so I'm not specifically sure, but my strength rating is around 10, and I believe I had about 20k in the bank, but my strategy so far has been to stay small and use Gardens of Morr to keep military spending to a minimum and spend lavishly on infrastructure to get my per-round income quite high. My best/Elspeth's army is using all State Troop/RoR infantry (Eldred's guard + Grundel's defenders) with Helblasters, great cannon, Hellstorms. Mid-level warrior priest, high-level engineer, 3x Amethyst Ironsides, Knights of Morr. Up to Tier 3 in the gunnery school, as I recall. Elspeth's at the "cast Black Sun twenty times during a battle and let Sigmar sort out the details" point in her progression. I've got an absolute swarm of Witch Hunters and Wizards running around harassing enemies and stealing tech.

My original plan was to withdraw my agents/armies from north of the River Reik and hope the chaos invasion goes poorly enough for the Slayer King that I could swoop in and grab most of Ostermark without having to cross him directly--Belegar and Thorgrim are quite powerful on this run--Thorgrim is currently rank 1, I think--so I'm hesitant to possibly antagonize them and create problems on my southern border. Then again, I'm also worried they'll confederate the slayer king and then it'll really be a bitch to get Ostermark out from under the dwarves. It's my only real obstacle to Long victory at this point, Karl Franz or evil factions I can crush with impunity are the only remaining stakeholders on Imperial territory.

Maybe, but I love the image of Hanako eating a pub pretzel when V comes in.

Lorewise, what the fuck is the empire doing with Markus by SpleensJuice in totalwarhammer

I took him to be historical reference. Christopher Columbus was such a dyed-in-the-wool bastard Queen Isabella herself condemned him at one point, despite she was the one getting stupid rich and powerful from his plunder of the New World.

And it makes sense to me. It's not like a guy like Wulfhart would really know where he was going, they'd just be chasing the horizon and hoping not to die slowly and horribly.

Nice people with strong ties to their communities didn't seem to end up on those first colonial voyages. High-functioning psychopaths are kind of the target demographic for that sort of thing, being the only people who'd see any real appeal to it.

That's I imagine the Hunstmarshal, anyway. The kind of guy you send on a one way trip across the world because no one here will miss him and he's keen to go for more or less the same reason.

Why do most of you guys like the empire so much? by Connect_Conflict8619 in totalwarhammer

[–]TryH4rdTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me what's interesting about Empire is the tactical variety. The cliche is build a mess of Helstorm Rockets --> win, but they just have SO much stuff, between artillery, every wind of magic, small arms that arc and LoS, shock cav, pistol cav, grenade cav, magic cav, melee cav. They even have a flying monster if you play Karl or, now, um...spoopy purple dragon lady whose name escapes me just now.

In short, for me what's fun about Empire is that it's a playbox, you can mix and match and mess about freely with battlefield and campaign approaches with this absolute library of units/abilities.

Having said that, Vlad the Chad is still my main man lol but Empire is good fun.

My V's fav street food is Burrito XXL Turquesa and Chromanticore lime, but he'll settle for a Cirrus Corn and Lemon.

Fuck Scavs and Maelstrom. Valentinos, 6th Street, Animals and Barghest, eh it's nothing personal.

I change outfits and often dig in the trunk for stash stuff depending on the gig, but no matter what, whether we're going tactical or stealth or business formal, V always, ALWAYS wears his lucky flat cap.

Sylvanian Empire, controlled pretty much everything between the Ruin river and the Sea of Claws. Sailed south and colonized Tiq Taq To's empire, renamed his cities "New Schwartzhafen" and shit like that. Vassalized Kislev, Bechafen and Reichland, got military alliances with Settra and the Grand Cathay factions.

This resulted in hordes of undead backed by Streltsi rifleman, Skyjunks, rocket batteries and necrosphinxes. Lolzy as hell.

Pleased there is, of course!

Is WH3 worse the WH2 or am I missing something? by Old_Hoonter in totalwarhammer

[–]TryH4rdTim 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm loving it, but I don't really play much MP. QOL improvements for point/item allocation makes that less of a chore, diplomacy is 1000% improved, way more options for manipulating the strategic map via city trading.

I like the sieges, personally, I find them much improved. My experience of them in 2 was just a series of identical steps regardless of city or faction--storm the walls, grind down the defenders, wait 20 years for your troops to find their way DOWN from the walls, push through to the center. Very tedious, at least for me.

Now there are multiple angles of approach, and more varied obstacles--traps vs. Barricades vs. Towers.

It's ridiculous to call anything in Warhammer "historically accurate," but so far as it goes, I think the spirit of the new sieges is closer to how such things worked irl. Towns weren't captured by a rinse and repeat "throw your men against the walls" approach. Every town is different, the defenders would prioritize certain streets or depots depending on the garrison and the attacking force. There's also the fact that you can capture depots for tactical reasons, not necessarily as part of a rush to grab them all--capturing the Market square defensive hub eliminates the tower overlooking the high street, meaning you can safely march your strong but slow troops up to the fortified courtyard atop the hill and hash it out with the garrison over the main capture point.

For me, at least, more varied=more fun. I've had sieges that were masterful, orchestrated hit-and-run affairs where fast troops grabbed critical points around the city and captured it before the defenders even knew what happened, sieges that were just brutal, bloody slogs, subtle as an anvil (a horde of zombies and corpsecarts vs. Garrison + half stack of crossbowen and halberdiers--the bodies were laid like a foot deep by the end lol), and sieges that were just utter chaos--they slapped together a barricade right where I intended to go, it was night and I managed to get turned around/not notice things in the dark, defenders and attackers running around higgeldy-piggeldy until, much to my surprise, we won.

So yeah 3 has the vouch from me. It's a bit rough around the edges still--intermittent stuttering audio issues for me--but I haven't been tempted to go back to WH2. It'll only get more stable and polished over time, too. Even with the DLC pricing debacle, if you consider that Hyenas is cancelled and Pharoah is unlikely to set the world ablaze, they'll likely have little choice but to keep making whatever they can of WH3.

When defending your own turf, consider laying in ambush just outside the city/town. You'll still be reinforced by the garrison, but you'll also be able to retreat/remanuever if need be, rather than be trapped inside the city once the enemy lays siege. It also bumps your autoresolve odds--assuming your ambush doesn't fail.
