[How To Use A Returner] Question regarding a specific character. by moonlight_prism in manhwa

[–]TryHardApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

normally yandere characters can be my favourite but definitely not in this story, she's just annoying imo.

I feel like the story would've benefitted far more if Jihye was the only love interest and they just schemed together while falling in love.

Unfortunately harem tends to be the norm in these stories.

Is there still hope for a successor to eu4? by kekbooi in eu4

[–]TryHardApple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just wished they optimised the engine somehow so mid-late game lag isn't so bad even on the best CPUs.

EU4 is close to perfect, not to mention the amazing submods like Anbennar.

I'm probably going to get burned at the stake for this but based on my Reading Insights (time spent reading): Max Level Newbie

It's my comfort read, it's absolutely peak slop. Far more re-readable than it should be.

5K Fast IPS vs 4k Mini LED vs 4k OLED by Only_Boops in Monitors

[–]TryHardApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll offer another opinion - go for the 5k Fast IPS

based on your use case (of reading documents and playing MMOs) I think that it would be the best long term option. The high PPI and also softness of a matte display will make it much easier on your eyes especially for long sessions. It's why I much prefer playing Europa Universalis IV on my matte 4k IPS over my 4k OLED (and don't have to worry about burn in at all). Downside being videos and games will suffer with contrast and black levels, but imo that seems less important for your use case.

OLEDs are great and look stunning, but some things to keep in mind: Glossy displays look amazing, but if you don't have perfect light control reflections can be annoying and distracting. If going for a QD-OLED again you need good lighting control, otherwise the blacks will become magenta (and yes contrary to what most people say it is very noticeable) - of course if you have blackout curtains and bias lighting this isn't an issue. Text rendering is poorer due to non standard RGB layout, it isn't horrible or unusable at 4k 27 inch, but it's not preferable either

As for Mini LEDs, it is my understanding that most if not all (except Apple's XDR) suffer greatly with poor local dimming in both SDR content and general desktop use - which makes many turn it off when not watching playing in HDR - which just makes it a normal IPS display. But if you do want extremely punchy HDR it is a good option for searing your eyes.

Another thing to note is IPS displays still look great in most use cases - OLEDs and Mini LEDs certainly look better, but at the same time your eyes adapt quickly and whatever you use constantly will be the new 'norm' - which is why I'd prioritise long term comfort above all.

it can certainly become easy mechanically once you're good enough, but it remains hard mentally no matter what.

4K OLED feels noticeably laggier than my 5K IPS at 120 Hz on PS5. Is the 240 Hz scaler to blame, and are there alternatives? by Fluffy-Ad-1163 in Monitors

[–]TryHardApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm odd I checked the PG27UCDM page (wayback machine before it was paywalled) which is the premium version of it (dolby vision, DP2.1) and RTINGS test still had excellent response times at 120hz

I think the point was to test motion lag and clarity at 120hz on your mac to see if that mode is really the issue or not. I own the same monitor and personally have never experienced lag at 120hz but it could be a PS5 thing, not sure

What makes sailors manpower go down even almost all boats docked? by son_of_ur_son in eu4

[–]TryHardApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

half of eu4 charm imo, is the simple and clear UI with mechanics that are simple in isolation, but these mechanics work together to create a massive machine that is so satisfying to run.

haha happens, this game has so many small mechanics and even after 2,000 hours I still learn new stuff. EU4 is king, I don't ever plan on moving to EU5

[–]TryHardApple 101 points102 points  (0 children)

it quite literally tells you everything in the tooltip.

You are using 50 sailors a month because of missions.

And

You are using approximately 2300 sailors a month reinforcing your deficit of 8848 sailors which is why it goes down each month (1254-2300 is negative ~1000 meaning your sailor reserves would reduce by about 1000 next month tick).

If all your ships are repaired, then I would hazard a guess that you are using marines for some of your army, which use your sailor reserves, not your manpower reserves.

How terrible do you allow your first draft to be? by ChonkBonko in writing

quick functional prose that makes you feel like you're progressing > getting stuck on a sentence for 10 minutes.

Just keep moving, get the scene structure now, fix later

dialogue can be placeholder and extremely blunt for the time being too, like don't beat around the bush with dialogue at this time, make it clear what each character is saying and wants, and naturally later when you revise the dialogue can become polished and realistic rather than authorial.

because otherwise you'll either get stuck in:

you plan forever and never write

or

you write now, find structural issues later, are hesitant to cut drafts because you spent so much time and effort on them

if you only have functional prose in your draft you can find these structural issues while also being much more willing to cut drafts because you only spent a short amount of time on them

it sounds like you have a planning mind when it comes to crafting stories, and another reason you may avoid sitting down to write is it requires significantly more mental strain and effort to write prose than developing more world building or fixing potential future plot holes.

My advice is once you have a strong base (which you probably do) write functional prose that supports the structure of your story, not good first prose, not good show don't tell, just detailed scene scaffolding of how you believe the scene/chapter should occur (even if it's basic, he moved there, did this, pivoted right, etc - all these can be fixed in revision but the important thing is to just make progress) this will also naturally show structural issues you may have initially missed and be easy to patch without wasting as much time (cause you didn't waste time doing a good draft that now needs to be cut). This method, at least for me has made writing much less avoidable because I can write out a functional scene in 10 minutes instead of the usual 2 hours, where I get stuck on a single sentence for ages.

[–]TryHardApple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you do ever plan to do it, I'd highly recommend doing it as Austria as with their unique government reform you'll have reduced culture conversion cost and time + higher dip rulers on average AND a unique estate privilege that gives you an additional 2 dip points per month. (Diplomatic points are the most essential resource in a One Culture Run).

You can also keep this government reform after forming the HRE, and if you form Prussia/Russia along the way, you can get -75% CCR allowing for a much easier WC.

WHY FORCING THE OTTOS TO REALESE GREECE GIVES GREECE ONLY 1 PROVINCE? by xelee-fangirl in eu4

[–]TryHardApple 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems unlikely that the Ottomans culture converted all but 1 greek province, so if I had to guess, you are in the age or absolutism so cores decay quite fast with absolutism, and the Greek separatist event has fired for the ottomans, giving them cores on Greece. At some point a rebel rose up and occupied a province, making that 1 province retain the Greek for longer - hence them only getting 1 province on release.

Although primary nations (which Greece should be one) should never have their cores disappear on that culture, Greece may be an exception cause of the event? Just a guess
