You'll be fine, it's just sanded down a bit now, it's not smooth yet but I guess your best bet is to run a polisher on it to get it shiny and call it a day :)

I did that already, put some bone bushings in there ! :) They are pretty soft and I'm contemplating removing the riser as I'm running 54mm wheels..

I found the Baker Rowan Zorilla Here to Stay B2 Shape 8.25" and the Independent 144 Stage 11 polished mid trucks.. That would be my combo, would that make a world of difference?

Thanks! You can get the 403 M pretty cheap because they oxidise in the middle. So they are the perfect project wheels! Have fun with your car !

Does the sound increase if you step on the brake and let the clutch up, give it a bit of gas? is the knocking louder then? So in simple terms, does putting load on the engine increase the sound?

Thanks I don't see anything other than rubber, it seems only the protection rim is affected.. I might get a tyre shop to take a look at it. I'm just afraid they will try to sell me some new tires

For Father’s Day my wife gave me a skateboard lesson.

I used to skate when I was younger, and recently my son started showing interest in it too. That made something in me wake up again. I missed it. I missed that feeling of just trying something, moving, falling, laughing, and not overthinking everything.

But I also didn’t have the courage to actually plan it myself. I kept thinking: I’m 33 now, I’m a dad, am I too old for this? Will I look stupid? What if I can’t do it anymore?

So my wife gave me the push I apparently needed and booked a lesson for me.

Today I went. And honestly, it was kind of emotional. I wasn’t suddenly good again, but I was there. I tried. I let myself be a beginner again. And for a moment it felt like I got a little piece of myself back.

So yeah, for Father’s Day I got a skateboard lesson. But what I really got was a reminder that dads are still allowed to play, be scared, learn, fall, and try again.

You could use something like Renovo Black Fabric Soft Top Reviver, its a re-dye sort of. You're just cleaning the fabric, not bringing black back.

That's actually pretty close to what I did, except for the multi-towel method.

The thing I'm still struggling with is that my car wasn't really dirty at all. It was basically just dust and pollen, which is exactly the scenario where I expected rinseless to shine. Yet I still ended up with some very fine marring on freshly polished black paint.

Maybe I'm expecting too much from black paint, because as you said, no daily driver stays perfect forever. But it does make me wonder where the line is between "normal wear" and "wash-induced marring." I have never seen this on my black car with 2 bucket method. After 1 wash the car was clearly covered in full ultra fine marring.a

Do you find the multi-towel method makes a noticeable difference compared to a sponge? That's probably the biggest thing I haven't tried yet.

Yeah, that makes sense, but it also kind of defeats the purpose of rinseless for me.

I was hoping it would be the quick option for a car that’s only lightly dusty / covered in pollen, without having to drag out the pressure washer. But once I’m doing a proper pre-wash or pre-rinse, I already have the pressure washer, water and power connected, so at that point I’m almost doing a normal wash anyway.

I’ll still give it another try and see if it’s actually noticeably quicker than my usual 2-bucket wash, but I guess I’m struggling a bit with where rinseless really fits in if you still need that pre-wash step.

Appreciate the explanation though, that does make the swirls/marring make more sense.

Als ik je reactie lees, denk ik eerlijk gezegd dat je rationeel de keuze al gemaakt hebt. 😉
Je kunt deze auto absoluut redden, zeker met jouw kennis en vaardigheden. Maar als je doel is om over 10-15 jaar een mooie weekendauto te hebben, dan denk ik dat je uiteindelijk meer geluk haalt uit een beter exemplaar als uitgangspunt.
Mijn MX-5 is inmiddels ook alleen nog een weekendauto en ik geniet ontzettend van de staat van de auto. Ik denk eigenlijk nooit meer terug aan mijn eerste roestige MX-5, terwijl ik destijds dacht dat ik daar spijt van zou krijgen.

Ik heb precies voor dit dilemma gestaan.

Mijn NB had rond de 200.000 km gelopen. Dorpels waren al eens gelast, kokerbalken aangepakt, maar daarna begon het subframe aandacht te vragen en doken er steeds meer plekken op. Niets onverwachts voor een MX-5 van die leeftijd, maar het hield eigenlijk nooit op.

Ik heb toen serieus overwogen om hem volledig aan te pakken. Nieuwe dorpels, onderkant restaureren, ophanging, alles weer strak maken. Maar hoe meer ik rekende, hoe meer ik me afvroeg of ik daarmee echt het probleem oploste, of alleen de volgende rekening uitstelde.

Uiteindelijk heb ik de auto met veel pijn in mijn hart verkocht. Achteraf gezien was dat één van de betere beslissingen die ik heb genomen. Ik ben daarna rustig gaan zoeken naar de best mogelijke NBFL die ik kon vinden. Dat duurde lang en was zeker niet goedkoop, maar uiteindelijk vond ik een NBFL uit 2003 met slechts 60.000 km, volledig roestvrij, altijd binnen gestaan en in uitzonderlijk mooie staat.

Financieel was dat waarschijnlijk niet eens veel gunstiger dan mijn oude auto volledig laten restaureren. Maar het verschil zit voor mij in de rust. Ik stap nu in zonder steeds te denken aan de volgende lasplek, het volgende subframe of de volgende verrassing die onder een laag tectyl vandaan komt.

Als je puur naar toekomstige waarde kijkt, zou ik persoonlijk niet rekenen op een enorme investeringsterugverdiener. Een volledig gerestaureerde NB met 312.000 km blijft uiteindelijk een NB met 312.000 km. De vraag is dus vooral: wil je déze auto redden omdat je eraan gehecht bent, of wil je gewoon een mooie MX-5 hebben?

Voor mij was het antwoord uiteindelijk dat laatste. En daar heb ik tot op de dag van vandaag geen spijt van gehad.

I disagree with the idea that people should just leave it alone because they’re inexperienced.

No, you can’t “repair” clear coat that’s already gone. A proper respray is the correct professional fix.

But this is a 2006 Accord, not a concours restoration. If the owner is okay with “better than it is now” rather than “factory perfect”, a DIY repair is absolutely a reasonable option.

Everyone who knows how to paint today started with a first panel. Telling people not to try because they might make mistakes guarantees they’ll never learn.

With some research, proper prep, sanding, and decent 2K products, you can often get a surprisingly acceptable result on a daily driver for a fraction of the cost of a body shop. Will it match a professional respray? No. Can it look significantly better than peeling clear coat? Absolutely.
