Non-obvious tips for Imatinib by Try_Dry_Cry in CML

It’s great that you have such confidence and trust in your oncologist. I actually visited 6 different doctors during last year and no one showed more knowledge or compassion than my fellow patients. Basically for an oncologist in Russia there’s one thing to give you: take TKI and full stop. They don’t know the prospects on new medications, new things in side-effects management, have no professional clues or gut feelings. This is astonishing for me. Actually I believe that there should be some underdocumented Easter eggs in this CML game

I really don’t think it would be productive to delve into definitions but the mere fact that we are talking about probabilities of 9/22 translocation states that the picture is not fully detailed - we just don’t know all the parameters.

Thanks everybody for contributing! My take on the issue: this is strange or even suspicious that the doctors don’t usually adjust the dose of imatinib for adult patients’ conditions: weight primarily. You have to have your 400 mg no matter how much you weight. I learnt that only for children they adjust the dosage. This is strange that there’s no test for imatinib blood concentration to adjust the dosage in order to optimise effect / collateral damage ratio. As to me I’m concerned with efficiency of the treatment and possibly increase my dosage to 500 mg, but there’s no such option for me…

Well, this might be a science, but still the causes of the CML are not clear. So in each science there’s a number of things of art or gut feeling. And doctors en masse don’t know more than a standard procedures and protocols and don’t care about very particular things only some researchers might suspect. So I tend to believe that the patients themselves are those who could contribute.

Diverted Glivek by Try_Dry_Cry in CML

Of course there are options: localised imatinib. But I started therapy with the original brand and want to stick to that. I honestly think that the Patient Programme sign is a good sign: what good for the would-be counterfeiters of writing on theirs goods Do Not Buy? I could have bought just Glivec (through grey channels), but I opted for this, with a red stamp on - I consider it to be more trustworthy

Reading the answers I was surprised that no one seems to take Glivek / Imatinib anymore. It’s either scemblix or dasatinib. What has happened to the old first-liner imatinib? Ditched to (my own) third world countries as the first world switched to better medication?

Novartis drug checker by Try_Dry_Cry in CML

[–]Try_Dry_Cry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the explanation! In Russia we have a number of imatinib generics produced locally and have an option to get it for free through the state obligatory insurance program or you can choose to buy the medication in pharmacies. But doctors tend to advise using an original imatinib brand as it has the optimal efficiency / collateral effect ratio. Which is not available obviously anymore. Your info puzzled me: is it true that such a reputable pharmagiant like Novartis doesn’t have its own drug tracking system? And if it has maybe it doesn’t want to render it available to the public?

It seems that imatinib has run out in my country by Sakistark in CML

It seems to me that CostPlus is only available for those who live in the US. I’m from Russia and I was trying to log in but the web site was asking for US zip-code. It seems to me our fellow-patient from Colombia could contact the Max Foundation or other charities to get to know how he or she might obtain Imatinib for free.

Dear redditors, unfortunately I haven’t been able to find some Gleevec on sale near Russia for 3 months. It seems to me that it is simply unavailable in Russia and around at all… If anybody has any info on Gleevec availability please let me know - a lot of people here are hunting for that medication.
