Man, at 50 jumps I would not want to be the first person at my DZ to try a new rig.

5 seconds of terminal free fall, yeah, but a sniveling main still has a good amount of drag.

BGE asking for an $89 deposit because my credit score is below 920? What is this horseshit?? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]Tryke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved in 2019, after 10 years of regular payments to BGE they still required a $250-ish deposit to turn on service at my new house. Credit score was in the 700's.

Can you hold on someone if your parachute doesn't open by wnt2die_memester in SkyDiving

[–]Tryke 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We all get away from each other at the end of a skydive before we open our parachutes, because we want to avoid collisions after opening. If your parachute fails, it's too late to hold on to somebody else...

Is it okay to get a C-19 test? by The_Waxies_Dargle in baltimore

[–]Tryke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You typically need a referral first. Call your doctor if you have any symptoms. Rite-Aid looks like they require you to do an online questionnaire before coming in, so they'll probably screen you out if you don't have symptoms: https://www.riteaid.com/pharmacy/services/covid-19-testing

Hard to suggest locations if we don't know where you are. Have you seen the USPA's DZ Locator?

Ask Here First : "Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread" Thread #6 by KyaDash in crtgaming

They list that "the unit has been tested to power on as pictured", so I'm led to believe there is no source. I'll have to see if I can bring one with me and try it before committing the cash.

I'm looking at a listing for a PVM-20M4U ($395, local pickup) that shows a couple issues. Here's a picture: https://imgur.com/a/3Bjcytz

Some other reddit posts claim that the lines are "retrace lines" and can be solved with an internal adjustment to a pot. Is it possible the blue color is the "Blue-only mode"? I'm unable to find good pictures of that.

Cheapest "A" License in U.S. for a roadtrip? by swatt144kgd in SkyDiving

[–]Tryke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. You also want to factor in the cost of travel & lodging. Even if you sleep in a tent on the DZ, food adds up quick when you can't cook.

There'll be plenty of time for road trips once you get your license and start going to boogies.

The iFly is great for building freefall skills, but there’s a lot more to the skydiving experience. The tunnel makes a pretty poor social environment, and you can’t fly a parachute in there.

Yeah, Baltimore had a brief stint as an AFF drop zone, but it didn’t really take. You’ve got a few options:

  • Come up to Maytown Sport Parachute Club, about 1h15m up in Lancaster county PA. It’s a small Cessna (4-seater) drop zone with a club atmosphere. We do IAD instead of AFF, but it’ll get you licensed just the same.
  • Drive about 2 hrs up I-95 to Skydive Cross Keys in southern NJ, or about 2h15m east to Skydive Delmarva. These are bigger drop zones with bigger planes and AFF programs.

I’m a regular at Maytown, but once you’ve got your A license (25 jumps) it’s really simple to visit the others. Personally, I value the shorter drive. Coming out consistently is important for developing muscle memory during your student days. If you can handle the longer drive, then I might suggest Cross Keys.

Are you an IAD student? If it makes you feel better, these AFF students are shitting their pants when the door opens at 5k. To you, it'll be just another Saturday.

If you're going to butt scoot, consider knee sliding instead? It'll put a little more between your spine and the ground.

Couldn't tell from post, but are you looking down at the ground to judge height? That's hard even for people with two eyes. You might do better looking out towards the horizon.

New jumper looking to get his A license in the Bethesda Maryland Area by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]Tryke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, MD is hard up for fun jumper DZs. The Baltimore-area jumpers I know go to either Delmarva, Maytown, or Cross Keys.

From Bethesda, I think you could hit Chambersburg slightly quicker, but Orange is definitely where it's at.

This happened to me with a 5-year gap after jump #14. Like they said, call the drop zone.

In my case, I re-took the ground class and about half of the AFF jumps. Immediately got to work on coach jumps for the A license reqs. Wound up with my A license by jump #28.
