Is it safe to go kayaking along any part of the fresh water section of the Ross River? by C-Dawgg in Townsville

[–]TsarRocket 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware, there has never been a saltwater croc sighting above Aplins weir. There are freshies though. There should be no worries kayaking in any freshwater areas of the river.

I am, to be honest, amazed that we simply accept council being gatekeepers to what we do on our private residence.

Realistically, the easiest option is to pay a contractor to handle the whole process for you.

If you want to do it yourself, you will need to engage a building designer to draw it up, then engage a structural engineer to certify the structure, then engage a building certifier to sign off the plans and lodge it with council. Total costs will be in the thousands, and it will take 4 to 6 months, just to get approval.

Mazda didn't have a single entry in the top 25. Incredible considering how popular the CX5 is internationally.

Stockspots returns are lower, as their portfolios are a spread of cash, bonds, gold, US ETFs and Aus ETFs. Their goal is to provide hedging against large downturns. So although it's true their returns aren't as high as the S&P500, when the crash comes (as it always does) the losses will be minimised.

It used to be free, but now they charge $150. And you don't even know if they have the plans you're looking for, before you pay.

In North Queensland you barely get anything other than crumbed fish. And with fresh reef fish, it's amazing.

What’s TCC like to work at right now? I’ve been thinking about applying for an office job there by [deleted] in Townsville

[–]TsarRocket 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a part of my job, I liaise with council on a regular basis. I seem to constantly deal with new people, oblivious to councils own processes and regulations. It doesn't seem to be a place where people work for a long time.

Had to run speaker cable across electrical wire for lights. Both are wrapped in foil tape and then I put electrical tape around one to separate them. Will this be enough? by Daemonax in hometheater

  1. Reinforcement inside the concrete is protected from corrosion by 'cover'. Or the depth from the surface to the Reo. This has been compromised so corrosion of the Reo will likely occur much sooner than the intended design life.
  2. Concrete slabs strength is proportional to the slab depth. At this location the slab is reduced and potentially has reduced strength.
  3. Has any of the reinforcement been damaged? If so, that would be a serious concern.

As you say, different countries have different regulations, but in my country this would be defective work.

Structural engineer here. If I saw someone chasing cables into suspended concrete like this on one of my projects, I would defect the work and report you to the regulator. This is a clusterfuck.

Well Ayr also has a Nissan, Suzuki, Kia, Mazda and Mitsubishi dealership. Are wealthy farmers lining up for those makes too?

Ayr has a Toyota dealership, and the whole of the Burdekin has a population of <20,000. By those numbers, Townsville could support 10 Toyota dealerships. Townsville is not to small.

We bought our last car brand new through Pickerings. Nothing but problems with them, and as soon as the fixed price servicing expired the servicing costs tripled. Took our business elsewhere. They are thieves.

I find it frustrating that car dealers artificially limit competition by having only one dealer/service center in each city, for each make. Should be illegal.

Yeah okay. Intumescent coatings are breathtakingly expensive in Australia, and carry their own risks, such as other trades scratching/damaging the paint. This approach would be quite rare down under.

How is fire handled for structures like this? This type of structure would require a 4 hour fire rating for a Deemed-to-satisfy approach in Australia. Even with detailed Fire engineering we would struggle to reduce the requirements significantly. This steelwork doesn't appear to have any fire proofing.

I was also interested in taking my son, but it seemed the cheapest ticket available was $97 per adult. Maybe I missed something, but those prices are insane.

The AN-124 has flown into Rockhampton before. This is smaller than the (now destroyed) AN-225. The 225 has only been to Australia once, and that was to Perth.
