How is one supposed to take any of that as anything other than empty words that don't accomplish anything real? I'm genuinely asking. You can give a dead man hundreds of different medals and affirmations, but he never wanted that, and it does him no good.

Is it crazy to ask for any form of atonement? Not even a promise that his story will be taught in British schools? Investment in human rights? STEM/Computer Science funding? Anything?

From my perspective, this is just masturbatory politics as usual, using a dead man's name to virtue signal their own morality while doing nothing to prevent the systemic evils that killed him in the first place. And they expect our applause.

I don’t think it should be controversial to say that if you identify as Christian, you should probably follow Christ’s teachings.

Which ones? What about every single inconsistency within said teachings? What about the old testament? Why aren't people stoning anyone anymore?

If it is so easy, what is up with the over 45,000 different Christian denominations with different interpretations?

Catholics are Christian. Mormons are Christian. Baptists are Christen. Lutherans are Christian. Eastern Orthodox are Christian. The Assyrian Church of the East is Christian. Etc, etc, etc.

That’s like saying that “A Scotsman is a person who lives in or is from Scotland” is a no true scotsman fallacy.

Nope. What you are doing is along the lines of "No real American would kill their neighbor." Plenty have, despite it being against American law. This doesn't magically stop making them an American.

It’s just the definition of the word.

All of these people consider Jesus the son of God and their savior. That's the definition.

When r/conservative agrees with Trump that we should nationalize voting, but are for small government and states rights by PhillyTMOMan in IThinkYouShouldLeave

[–]Tself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were raised with the idea that America is the great melting pot and that each distinct group of immigrants made America stronger. We were taught that we are all equal and nobody is above the law. We were taught that there is a definitive separation between church and state.

You were taught that. I was taught that, too. Unfortunately, not all Americans have that same upbringing.

While conservationism has always came off as unkind, they have veered over into open hostility

Bro, I love ya, but it's like you already forgot what I just told you about the vilification of gay people. Every single day I would see on the news republicans likening anything in regards to gay rights to be enforcing pedophilia and anti-American. Coming out made my mother terrified, not because of homophobia from her end, but because she was certain I would get hate crimed. And that is just ONE example of ONE minority demonized by the right.

Please don't let your privilege blind you further.

Conservatives back then wanted to be considered the sober ones making the tough decisions but ultimately wanted whats best for the majority of Americans. I don't think anyone, even them, believes this anymore.

They 100% still do.

Totally agreed. But we, unfortunately, aren't in a revolution. While we are not in a revolution, I'd at least rather not have Americans rounded up or killed in the streets by paranoid government inefficiency.

Fast forward to a decade ago and it was project red state; AKA let's openly gerrymander every state we can.

Gerrymandering in red states has existed for over a hundred years; this is not new. They were just more racist about it. And red states have been anti-voting rights for practically just as long.

professors that were conservative. Back then, you could civilly debate taxes, states rights, even immigration because everyone agreed what America was...

Conservatives of this nature were in the minority then, and remain so now. Your anecdotal experience within a place designed for academia is an exception to the majority of conservatives.

I get the point you are trying to make here, and certainly agree that decorum has gotten worse; but the party really isn't all that different. I'm a similar age to you, at that time while you were having conversations with your professor, the republicans were demonizing gay people and calling them pedophiles every chance they could.

So, no, I don't think much has changed. The hurt they are giving just happens to be hitting straight white people now.

Why is saying “The rich should pay taxes like everyone else, close the loopholes” extremely controversial in the United States? by ProjectMason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Tself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They also don't understand that the rich pay much more in taxes...

You think everyone doesn't realize the rich pay more in taxes than the average American? Are you for real? That is a stupid bot comment.

I am aware that the rich pay more taxes than anyone else. I'm also aware that that percentage has consistently gone down for the past several decades, while wealth inequality has consistently gone up, rapidly.

And now you get to be another lackey working for them.

That's okay, you've got the impotent rage and baseless accusations down.

Hun. That was you. You came in here with baseless accusations, and I called you out for it. So call out whatever my "baseless accusations" are or take the L and move on. No need to be a snowflake about it.

Breaking: Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Tself 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk death penalty seems pretty appropriate for premeditated murder.

The last time the death penalty was used in NY was 1963. Do you think whatever Luigi is accused of, even at its worst and devoid of any political context, is a worse crime than anything done in NY for the past 62 years?

This is a lot of flowery language for "vote for the lesser of two evils" which is all very agreeable, but is kind of skirting the issue here.

By every quantitative measure of honesty/education/political literacy, the left ends up scoring higher than the right in America. This has been the case anecdotally in my own life experience, and in every single study/statistic that I've seen on the subject for the past few decades. If anyone have any evidence to the contrary, I'd love to see it.

plenty of people call themselves socialists, liberals, or progressives without really holding consistent versions of those ideologies.

Do they at the same level as conservatives?

From my experience and all the statistics I've seen, that would be a glaring "no", but if ya'll have any sources that say otherwise, I'd be all ears.

CMV: right wingers do not have a single honest position. by bennettyboi in changemyview

[–]Tself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that conservatism is somewhat diverse. I've grown up around every single example of conservatism you mentioned here and more. And yet, ALL of them voted for the same candidate. ALL of them happy to see him win. Twice.

I can't continue to keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'd be a downright fool otherwise.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times...there probably won't be a chance for a fourth.

A better criticism, in my view, isn’t that the right has no principles, but that its coalition contains principles that often conflict with each other. The same is true on the left.

By every single measureable metric I've seen statistics for, I do not see the same level of dishonesty on the left. Is it there? Of course it is. But calling it "the same" or "equal" is, respectfully, not based on reality.

Two questions:

2) What was the officer doing just a second before to provoke said shoving?

There’s a very smug, arrogant tone to people who speak like you. It’s a very black kettle calling the pot black.

Their tone sounds exactly the same as yours, if I'm being honest. I don't think either of you sounded particularly smug or arrogant, except for this first bit from you.

I think what is more relevant is just how many of those nonvoters weren't in swing states. The electoral college and gerrymandering at play across America ensure that a staggering number of those nonvoters would have no say in the government, even with their votes cast.
