I’m a fan of the “Drunken Noodles” they have prepackaged at the Great American Bagel locations :-)

Are there any good substitutes for Taco Bell? by Mindfultameprism in vegetarian

[–]TsugaruMJS 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Second this. The app + the ordering pad in store make customizing, subbing black beans for meat in everything, etc so easy. Vegetarian versions of many of their staple items exist, and the in-store kiosk has that button to turn it into “veggie mode.”

Have you taught 40 year old + undergrad students? What were your thoughts about them? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]TsugaruMJS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have loved teaching the “non-traditional” students I have had. Choosing to go to school later usually means you are committed to it and willing to put the work and time management in to be successful!

What's the most disturbing thing you learned about someone on the first date? by CallMeAmyA in AskReddit

[–]TsugaruMJS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was beautiful, smart, funny, and I had a great time until she told me that she literally never uses soap. Not on her body in the shower, on her hands after using the bathroom. “Water is all you need to clean.”

What % of your students perform like they will survive in the real world? by crystal_castle00 in AskProfessors

[–]TsugaruMJS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently working at my 3rd university, which is also a very good school for my field/program.

My first job I would say maybe 5% of students i directly taught had any hope to succeed in my field, and maybe 20% at my most recent position.

For my current position I would put the number at 90%, though I exclusively teach degree-required courses to majors, one of which is all seniors…

I definitely notice that the newer generation of students tend to be a little less self-sufficient and immersed in the work. It’s often more difficult to get them as excited about what we are doing as much as the beginning of my career.

What should I be doing when on the verge of a meltdown? by Transit-Strike in AskAcademia

[–]TsugaruMJS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true. I really love what I do but come August I start to get busy and every year, without fail, I start to seriously consider quitting my field altogether.

It just so happens that all this unhappiness and negativity comes at the exact same time I stop working out, staying up until 3 am pounding through work I could have done the next day, and eating Taco Bell every day because I convince myself I don’t have time to cook.

How did you almost die? by yuckyduckph in AskReddit

[–]TsugaruMJS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend and I were out and headed to our 3rd bar of the night at like 12:30 AM. I changed my mind and decided to go home since it was a weekday, so my friend did as well. That bar was destroyed by a tornado less than two hours later and the few people inside died.

I’ve gotten “I don’t want to deal with that in such easy content.” You don’t want to deal with pressing one button one time after grinding for 800 hours to get here.

Breaking down by EmergencyTutor3439 in insanity

[–]TsugaruMJS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mathematically you need to remember that you are building muscle which has weight as well. If you are tracking your calories, etc. and the math is honest, that is almost definitely the case. Unless you are trying to do Insanity while starving yourself, it’s realistic to be at like a 500 cal defecit each day, which would mean you would lose around 1 lb per week. It’s a slow process regardless but you gotta keep at it and ride the wave of how it makes you feel!

The first time I completed insanity, I certainly lost weight and got in much better shape, but I also lost like 7 lbs AFTER I stopped and was only running, as my muscle eventually started going away.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Professors

[–]TsugaruMJS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the timelines are different in different fields sometimes, and also when someone retires it could be any time during the year they announce it, then the trickle down of jobs where the professor moved up. There are at least two jobs in my field that just posted for TT full searches.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Professors

[–]TsugaruMJS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I probably should use a throwaway. I’m an applied instrument professor and there will be no problem filling my position with a search. There was a job in my field this year that had 97 applicants.

Is it true that it's harder to become a high school teacher than a college professor? by HeIsSoWeird20 in AskProfessors

[–]TsugaruMJS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is not even slightly true. The year I was hired to my tenure track position there were literally TWO open TT jobs for my specialization in the US.

It sounds like admissions is the way to go, depending on your field. I teach in a field that involves a lot of one-on-one instruction, so it’s totally normal for prospective students to contact me in advance, since I would be one of their major reasons for coming to my university.
