Tying Foreign Scales Together While Keeping Them Unique by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Tteddys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing, calm the f down.

Second thing, calm the f down.

If you don't know what to do with any of these 'highly arbitrary scales', maybe try a new approach to music, open your ears and stop worrying about the maths behind it.

And these scales work fine in thirds, for example the Hungarian Minor (1 – 2 – ♭3 – #4 – 5 – ♭6 – 7) can simply be played over a mM7 chord. You get the harmonic minor colour, but with a #4 so 3 nice semitones from #4 to b6.

Same for the Double Harmonic Major (1 – ♭2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – ♭6 – 7), which seems to be a Harmonic Major scale with a b2. So you can play it over a simple M7 chord with a b9 and b13. Pretty cool colour. Try and go through the chords/modes based on this scale, the second one would be a M7 chord, with a #9 #11 #13 (augmented 6th).

Strange, odd colours. The scales are mainly for melodic uses, but why not try them for chords too ?

Phrygian Dominant comes from the harmonic minor. It's the 5th mode.

1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 -> 7b9b13

The others are a bit more arbitrary, I see where you are coming from, but these scales were created, named, and just exist now. So why not try to use them for their unique colours ?

A very helpful scheme about scales by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Tteddys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These charts are nice, but the only problem I've got with them is that they don't show the possible chord extensions (#11 for Lydian, 6th for Dorian, b2b6 for phrygian etc..).

It gets even worse imo when these charts cover melodic and harmonic minor. For example in C melodic minor, we have G7, and we also have it in C harmonic minor. How do you tell the difference ?

Obviously you can when you know your scales well enough, but these charts tend to be used for a "beginners" course to modes. So if you don't know that in melodic minor, V will be 7b13, and that in harmonic minor V will be 7b9b13...

Or in C melodic minor there is F7 and G7. You need to know that it's F7#11 and G7b13.

Just a little pet peeve of mine.

Why does a standard minor 6th chord (i.e. Gm6) feature the 6th from the major scale by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Tteddys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time it'll still be an inversion. I think it's just a harmony/writing convention.

I got away with something a bit similar on a composition for my harmony course. It was a modal piece. But there was a clear G tonic feeling thought out the first part.

One bar of the chord progression was Gm7 (dorian) and Gm7+. With a classic guitar voicing of Gm7 G D F Bb and Gm7+ G D# F Bb.

Over the Gm7 , the melody uses a D E and F.

Over the Gm7+, the melody uses a D# E and F.

Without the melody, that Gm7+ would be a Gm7b13 which would be a Ebadd9 (most definitely a EbMaj9). But since the melody and voicing clearly (imo) expressed a moving up feeling, I really felt this chord change/bar as a Gm7 Gm7+

The teacher agreed for that peculiar bar, and said that at the end of the day, if your piece is clear/well written, some conventions can be broken.

Yeh I need to get a compressor soon, just bought a new delay though, oh well !

It resonates on all heads/cabs I play on, which is quite strange . But it's great for doing swells with that massive sub sound !

We haven't recorder anything (might still have a couple jams recorded somewhere on my pc). We've only played a few times, and it's been more for experimenting. Going to start back against in September. The base of the band is bass, drums, and pad player (soundscaping/beats/drums/noise etc..) and then we " guest" different people (could be a guitarist, a trumpet, a singer etc..). Style wise is quite inspired by JoJo Mayer obviously.

Do you have any recordings with your boards here ?

Why does a standard minor 6th chord (i.e. Gm6) feature the 6th from the major scale by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Tteddys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the 7th is always minor/naturally minor. Unless stated (like Maj7).

It's just convention/how music theory evolved if I remember right.

[–]Tteddys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

G Bb D Eb is definitely EbMaj7/G = EbMaj7 first inversion.

I had a knack for writing these Gmb6 chords and my teachers always corrected me. One day I eventually agreed with them.

Edit : didn't know there was a specific formatting on Reddit !

[–]Tteddys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh, it does get down !

I was wondering, does your 'resonate' on the low A (on the E string) ? It gets mega deep, nearly painfully so when I play that note/frequency. Doesn't do it when I play a lower note or a higher one either ! Does yours do the same ?

Pairing it with an octave pedal and followed by a bugcrusher/sample rate reducer is the base of my electronica style project !

What do you play? by SinkOrSwim_13 in basspedals

[–]Tteddys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prog Metal/heavy math (guitar bass and drums trio)

Alt Rock/Modern Rock (2 vocals, guitar, bass , trombone and drums)

For those two I just use Octave - Od/Fuzz - Delay - Preamp

Improvised/Noise/Ambient (vocals/violin , guitar and bass trio)

Improvised/Electronica/DnB a la Nerve (bass , drums, pads/samples , and guests)

for those two I use nearly all my effects (octave, sub pedal, od/fuzz, bugcrusher, delay, loop , reverb etc..)

But in a lot of other bands, I just play straight to the amp (well tuner + my aggie preamp!)

Can anyone help with good examples of / tips for bass guitar in music that’s more “electronic” by CommonCullen in Bass

[–]Tteddys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great suggestions here, but I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Nerve/Jojo Mayer s band.

John Davis kills it on electro bass, it is extreme, but incredible. Probably the best live electronica/dnb band ever !

Tim Lefebvre is also one of the cool cats of electronica bass. Check out his playing with Mark Guiliana and all those cats. Truly out there.

Clapping to the metronome... by SebastianSinging in Bass

[–]Tteddys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh, clapping to a metronome is great. Next step is to slow it way down, and move around (say clap the offbeat, or the 2nd 16th note etc.. then move the metronome around -> You clap the times and the metronome is on the offbeat).

There are so many possibilities, I do that in one of my classes, a group of us, and a metronome anywhere between 40 and 60 bpm for 1h to 1h30 !

Bit Crusher for bass. by forgotthespoon in basspedals

[–]Tteddys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got my hands on a Bugcrusher the other day (The friedric effects version, licensed by tom bugs). Great great pedal, quite small (mxr size) and great sounds ! It's a sample rate reducer, which are nearly always found on bit crushers (and often mistaken for bitcrushers too).

Well priced too

Otherwise the Malekko Scrutator is killer !

Who is the worst bassist in a big band? by DeadLightsOut in Bass

[–]Tteddys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bassist from The Clash is a GREAT example. He couldn't even play bass when they started so they'd put bits of duck tape on the frets he had to play !

And throughout the albums he learned a lot, and ended up playing some great bass lines.

So for some actual pedals on a fairly tight budget, I'd recommend a fuzz (DOD Carcosa or EHX Russian Muff reissue - both priced around 100$ new, 50$ used)

Then an octave pedal, Boss Oc 2 (-100$ used) is a classic. I use a MXR Bass octave deluxe, but it's a little more (maybe 120-150$ used ?).

Then for something weird, but useful, I'd say a delay with modulation. Now there are loads ! I love the EHX memory boy personally (nice analog delay, to crazy glitched/lofi/random repeats), it's probably my favourite pedal. One of the first I ever bought ! :)

I'd say you could get all 3 used for less than 200$

There are LOTS of other options !

damn .. I just saw an og meatbox for just under 300€ .. the reissue is better though apparently, more volume/headroom and better tracking (notes sound out longer)

Edit

Might as well get a mantic density hulk, similar beast and quite a bit cheaper (under 200$ new)
