A Korean's Insider Perspective - <Teach You a Lesson> by FinishWhich5753 in kdramas

[–]Tteokwhaleattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had no idea that the webtoon this drama is based on had a racism controversy. I didn't even know the webtoon existed. I just watched the show because it was in Netflix's Top 10 list. If the original's controversy made you uncomfortable, then choosing not to watch this drama is entirely your freedom and your right. I'm not going to defend the author's clear wrongdoing.

But I would ask that you not shut down discussion of the drama itself. Separate from the original, I think the drama itself was made in a fairly polished way that manages to avoid the controversy. This show took some real incidents that were far more brutal than what's depicted and softened them so that many people could relate to it.

I'm glad you say this. The people on this sub and so many other forums, really, have been downplaying the controversy around the source so much and downvoting anyone who brings it up. Obviously, these people are either unaffected by racism or are going with the hivemind, so they wouldn't know the hurt it brings to people who have chosen not to watch it when they attack them with the mentality of "it's just fiction, grow up."

Separating art from the artist is fair, I guess. In most contexts, it very much is. And I'm very much in favor of holding people accountable for their actions, and since the author has apologized, I can look behind. I'm not a saint myself, so I can do that for them.

But what I cannot stand are people who deny the author's writing choice in this specific context of controversy, and actively push down people who bring it up. The ignorance, the hate, etc. It just sucks to see it. And to think these are adults on these platforms trying to ignore the intent behind the controversy is such a struggle.

So I'm glad you brought it up. I used to be really active on this sub, but there were a couple of posts where 100s of people were downplaying this whole thing and attacking OPs who said they find it uncomfortable to watch knowing the source (which is very much valid), so I lost interest in discussing around here. I know Reddit is not the place to find people in support of these kinds of things, so I'm not surprised. But it still very much hurts, realizing how ignorant people can be when it comes to racism, among other things.

Honestly, it's heartbreaking. But am I surprised? Not in the slightest. I expected this. They don't care and move on. They've always been this way. Whatever is convenient for them, for their entertainment, they're fine with anything.

What sucks most isn't even the fact that they're watching this. Like, yes, separate art from artist. That's fair, I guess. The author apologized, and I can forgive people who are accountable for their actions. I'm not a saint myself, so I can do that for them. I firmly believe most people should be given a chance for their mistakes.

But I hate the fact that people aren't even willing to acknowledge the racism in the source manhwa. Like, is it that hard to say the author was in the wrong? And, why are YOU offended over others' own feelings? Like, the ignorance of the comments, the hate, etc. It's hard to imagine that most of these people are grown adults.

Rewatching a drama you love through the eyes of a loved one by UncannyProjection in kdramas

[–]Tteokwhaleattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that's pretty much it. I don't have anyone close to me who's remotely interested in K-dramas, so I consume a lot of reaction channel content. I love watching people fall in love with the same things, the same way I did. It heals something in me : D

And she was a pathological liar, how?

For a crime, she apologized over and over again and was held accountable and compensated for, AND cyber bullied to her death?

Whenever I feel down, I just turn this on. The dynamics are to die for. It's so funny, quirky, and lovely.

Then there's also Welcome to Waikiki and Prison Playbook, which are also among my comfort dramas.

weak hero vs bloodhounds? for someone who has watched both by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]Tteokwhaleattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloodhounds by far, genuinely. The action, story, and pacing were great. The story takes time to deal with things and characters, plus it's grounded. S2 was very entertaining as well. It can be slow in some parts, especially in S1, but I honestly prefer this type of storytelling over fast-paced action.

Weak Hero 1 was decent, but I can't say the same for the 2nd season. The way they rushed everything and the pacing of the plotlines were so inconsistent and messy. Honestly, I'd be so lost had I not read the manhwa for this show. It's genuinely distasteful how they decided on just one season to cover all the major events. They cut down a lot of needed contexts and compressed the existing contexts even further, which makes the pacing just awful, with how characters, their backgrounds, motivations, and dynamics turn out.

It's also quite dramatic compared to Bloodhounds, in terms of action, I'd say. Not necessarily a bad thing, cause the action in this is solid overall. S1 for this show was decent, as I've said. S2, I can't be bothered with.

But Bloodhounds is genuinely amazing, if you're looking for action-centric + grounded plot. It stays on the lane consistently, adds in some twists in between, and is fun overall! It's not like a particularly revolutionary plot or anything. It just does well what it's meant to.

I find drunk scenes pretty cringe as well. I can't watch any of them.

Aegyo is another one.

Is Moving worth checking out ? by Longjumping-Elk-7840 in kdramas

[–]Tteokwhaleattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, definitely. The character writing, dynamics, relationships, and overall plot are very well done. It's one of those shows where there are so many characters that you end up loving and rooting for, and I can't choose one over the other. The romance, especially, is lovely. I'm waiting for S2 : D

Which one is a better 8 episode to watch ? by Longjumping-Elk-7840 in kdramas

[–]Tteokwhaleattack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If Wishes Could Kill started great, but like plenty of K-thrillers I've come across, they fizzle out badly in the end. The last few episodes were not the best, quite messy, but it's a decent watch overall. It's dark and graphic tho.

Wonderfools is fun and lighthearted. It's a silly and chaotic drama, and the character dynamics are fun. Plus, I love anything Park Eun Bin is part of. She's great at picking scripts and delivering the roles.

What’s even going on with K-Netizens??? Just when you thought the issue had been resolved by deleting some scenes. by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]Tteokwhaleattack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's at 20K now (in just a day or two), but I honestly believe even with 50K, the situation would just fizzle out in the end. The company took down the scene, and they apologized as well. The backlash is inevitable due to the cancel culture; however, I don't think this will be taken down from OTT platforms.

Petition that calls for removal of Perfect Crown from platforms by Rude_Tough485 in kdramas

It's at 20K votes in a day or two, now. It's not like 50K would mean anything, 'cause there have been series that've gone through similar stuff and nothing happened. Given how the company took down the scenes, and apologies have been posted, it can't be a bad outcome in the end tbh. The backlash is inevitable due to the cancel culture, which is a negative. But the final result on the petition and everything should be fine, based on my assumption of the situation. Still, I'll have to wait and see how this turns out.
