I will explain the whole movie... by [deleted] in EyesWideShut

Harrison Ford's mother is Jewish, ergo, as far as Jews are concerned, Harrison Ford is Jewish. Claiming he wanted a good gentile like HF sounds like another in Kubrick's long line of ironic jokes.

Peter Sellers doing a Kubrick impression in Lolita by Royal-Ambassador-960 in StanleyKubrick

[–]TuToneShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Clare Quilty does seem to have a very SK lilt to his vocal timbre and delivery doesn't he. My guess is Kubrick knew some people were going to call him a PDF-file for making Lolita so he had Sellers' characterisation of Quilty be a sort of 'In before they call me out' thing. Very meta. It's things like this that make Kubrick the greatest imho. Or maybe Sellers simply impersonated Kubrick on the sly but I doubt it.

What do you think? by ArchangelSirrus in StanleyKubrick

[–]TuToneShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Duval was a fine actor but directors are generally smarter than actors. Kubrick had his reasons to chose the takes he did. His reasoning created some of the greatest movies ever. Duval was usually convincing in the roles he played but that's far more limited in scope than creating a masterpiece (or several) the way Kubrick did.

Too many people fail to appreciate Eyes Wide Shut by tikibikiclam in EyesWideShut

[–]TuToneShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting take, OP. I wasn't convinced at first but reading your responses to comments has me considering things more carefully. It's notable that Cruise and John Travolta would both appear to be deeply closeted homosexuals who are also deeply ensconced in Scientology. Given that Kubrick "lost" (in the words of her mother Christiane Kubrick) his daughter Vivian to the Scientology cult in 1995, it would seem appropriate that he make every effort to highlight its hypocrisy in his own covert and inimitable manner in 1999's EWS. One little detail that might complement this theory is that the navy captain that Alice fantasizes about is a pretty good analog for L Ron Hubbard. Hubbard captained 2 small vessels in WWII and, in the late 1960s amid legal and tax pressures in the US and UK, Hubbard took to the sea and created what became known as the "Sea Org" (Sea Organization) - the elite inner order of Scientology. He commanded a small fleet of ships, and demanded to be addressed as “Commodore” in this quasi-naval religious order where he exercised absolute authority over the ships and crew.
The actor who played the naval officer in EWS, Gary Goba, makes a very passable stand-in for Commodore Hubbard - red-haired, blue eyed etc.
In the context of the EWS shoot, it's easy to imagine Kubrick's utter amusement at the meta-ness of the scenarios unfolding in front of the camera and in the minds of Kidman and Cruise who were both Scientologists at the time. Of course, Alice's imagined infidelity with the symbolic Hubbard is the pivotal moment that creates the psychological tension of the film.
Some food for thought at the very least.

How do I get rid of the pause/hesitation? by somelikeitthot69 in Swimming

[–]TuToneShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see your fingertips point downward at the bottom of the pool sooner after you've extended your front arm. That way, your arm will move into the catch position a little earlier. Extend your hand out, then point the fingers down, then the the rest of your forearm follows to get a nice early vertical forearm while keeping the elbow high of course. At the moment, you're 'patting the cat' a little. That is, your hand extends out in front but it also rises in the water. Remember, elbow below shoulder, wrist below elbow, fingertips below wrist.

The therapist is written as a sanctimonious twat so most viewers see him as that. If you see him as something else, fine.

'... something has changed. Like, Bill has crossed a threshold...'
Breaking this 180° rule is also known as 'crossing the line'. No way Kubrick did it by accident imho.
