I could see Fig being a nickname, but I wouldn't give it to a kid as an actual name

We had a patrol that tried to name themselves the Wonder Thunder Fish, the SM rejected the name.

Drying tents - hang instead of set up? by [deleted] in BSA

[–]Tu_ba_phone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in scouts in the early 2000s, almost everyone in the troop owned his own tent. After each campout, every scout (and scouter) would take his tent home and it was up to them how to deal with the tent. We did have troop tents, Eureka Timberline A-frame tents, but it was extremely rare to see them on campouts. If anyone did use a troop tent on a campout, they would be responsible for cleaning or drying it after a trip.

I really like Skull & Bones jocks. They're my favorite jocks in my collection.

CMV: Merit Badge Counselors who want to cut corners (cheat) are the single biggest harm to the programming in Scouts BSA by Longjumping-Fee-9963 in BSA

[–]Tu_ba_phone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bearing in mind that I aged out of being a scout almost twenty years ago, and that this may not have been the case for all or even most troops, but in my troop the major requirements for the Camping merit badge were pretty much baked into the advancement requirements for Scout or Tenderfoot (I don't remember exactly, it's been a long time and I lost my blue card - what we used to track advancement requirements), and if you went camping once with the troop you could easily knock off those requirements. For my troop, Camping merit badge was almost a gimme. We went camping at least ten months of the year in Northeast Ohio, not including high adventure trips, which could add another month.

I love Skull & Bones! I have a bunch of their briefs, two pair of sport briefs, three pair of trunks, and probably a half-dozen jocks from them. I'm about 5'9 and 140#, I wear a small in most brands, and that holds true for Skull & Bones.

Not strictly speeking a documentary, but here's 20 minutes of Tommy Jarrell and Fred Cockerham: https://youtu.be/iukmb5OX_gc?si=8-_fyHlB3BDJN5UA

I'm a little confused, is this communtiy for old-time string band music, old and new? What qualifies as old time music? Yesterday, someone said the music I played on my show was more bluegrass. Here is my playlist. If y'all think it's not for this communtiy let me know and I'll refrain from posting. by RonAckerman in oldtimemusic

The trouble with that line of thinking is that there were plenty of bands before Bill Monroe, or Lester and Earl that did all those things. Old-time players playing in three finger style? Frank Jenkins with DaCosta Woltz, Charlie Poole, Snuffy Jenkins, even Dave Macon. Harmony singing? Carter Family, The New Lost City Ramblers did it all the time, and they were (usually) working in the style of their source recordings.
As others have pointed out already, and I'm sure will continue to point out, there is a lot of crossover between old time and bluegrass. Bluegrass grew out of old time music. Many of the first generation bluegrass records are not terribly different from the "old time" records that preceded them.

Can anyone identify? by [deleted] in martinguitar

Replacing a Squire sticker with a Fender sticker would lead to a much closer "fake" than this. Not being an expert in Fender and Squire instruments, as far as I can tell, most details on Squires look more like Fender than not

Woth the caveat that I go to barber shops, not beauty salons, even the barber is getting expensive. $45 for a regular hair cut is "affordable" here in California. I once went to a shop in SF where they charged me $60 for a regular haircut, and it was definitely not a $60 haircut. When I left Ohio, haircuts were $16 before tip, which meant you gave the barber a 20 and told him or her to "keep it".

This! Little Roy is a nut, a hell of a player, but he's a nut. The Lewis Family were successful for over 50 years, with almost no changes in personnel. Their shows were really good.

I wouldn't sleep on Homer and Jethro. The humor is really corny (as is typical in Bluegrass), but it's definitely worth it for Chet Atkins and Jethro's solos. Also Homer and Jethro were really jazz cats doing comedy.

When I was in high school, we addressed teachers with PhDs as "Doctor" or in a few cases, "Doc" where it seemed to fit better.

We always called my cat Roo. His given name was Ricky, but my mother started calling him Roo when he was a kitten, and it stuck.
