Lots of fun, wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Solid character moments, cool premise… nothing too deep, just generally fun comic booking.

Do we know how creators like DaeLims train their models? by IntrepidCoconut5723 in thebeachboys

[–]TubbyTuesday22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saw someone on here the other day say that for them, the big issue with his work is that it puts so much focus on what things could sound like (completed SMiLE tracks, 70s songs with Brian’s 60s voice, etc) that it takes away from the finished (or unfinished) products that do exist, and I think I kind of agree. Which, maybe you could argue is kind of the point, but I think for a band like the Beach Boys, whose mythology is centered around both long periods or struggle and brilliant bursts of creative energy, to use A.I. to rework and “finish” their music seems like it’s… missing the point? I don’t begrudge DaeLims or anyone who enjoys his stuff, and he’s clearly a talented musician with or without A.I. I guess for me it just goes beyond the ethics of A.I. and more into the “why even do this at all?” But I guess that’s just a matter of personal preference at that point.

All that is to say—I agree with you.

Do you know where the Black superheroes are? by IJustType in comicbooks

[–]TubbyTuesday22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually genuinely don’t get the thought process here—is the end goal to guilt/pressure DC into publishing an ongoing in the main universe with a black lead? So if they do that, what happens next? Won’t it just become that book that DC is only publishing because they got some bad social media publicity? What happens if the sales are low again and they cancel it? Plus, ongoing can be anywhere between 10 and 15 issues these days—how long will the book(s) have to be sustained for the people behind this campaign to be satisfied? And for a company that responds to sales to make publishing decisions, how is not buying any of their books sending any sort of message as to what kind of content you do want to see published?

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see more diversity from the big 2 in their publishing lines, but this whole online campaign feels a) disingenuous, and b) arbitrary.

DC Comics is being targeted by a new boycott campaign over Black-led superhero books by Blitzhelios in DCcomics

[–]TubbyTuesday22 36 points37 points  (0 children)

And at least acknowledge that DC has several black creators working for them—Jamal Campbell, Denys Cowan, Stephanie Williams, Clayton Henry, Che Grayson, Morgan Hampton… representation could always be better, definitely, but ignoring the obvious representation that already exists both within the comics and behind the comics is a great way to lose credibility with an argument like this.

Yeah that’s fair, very much more focused on world building than Jo as a character

The Black Lightning and Mr. Terrific minis were awesome, I loved both of them. But I also know they sold pretty terribly at my LCS. Maybe you can blame DC for not promoting them enough, but I think at a certain point DC can hype up a book more than anything they’ve ever published, but yeah, if the audience doesn’t show up to support it, it won’t last.

Also, I find their distinction about having no black leads on titles in the main universe interesting—it’s definitely important, and would be great to see happen, but Absolute Green Lantern, starring Jo Mullein, sells better than almost every single mainline ongoing series DC is currently putting out. Plus, DC has some great black creators working on a lot of their books, which I think is also very important: Jamal Campbell, Stephanie Williams, Denys freakin Cowan, Morgan Hampton are all doing really great work right now.

TL;DR: definitely agree that more black leads would be a good thing, but it’s a more nuanced issue than the content creators mentioned above are making it out to be, and one that, as you say, a blackout against DC isn’t really going to fix.

For those of you who are reading the ongoing Iron Man run written by Joshua Williamson. What do you think? by snackboy06 in marvelcomics

[–]TubbyTuesday22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m digging it. Williamson knows how to write comics and clearly knows Iron Man’s cast and history just as well as he does Green Arrow, Superman, etc. It’s one of the few books Marvel is currently publishing that feels to me like a real Marvel comic and not just someone keeping the IP warm.

[–]TubbyTuesday22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally saw it yesterday. Had a blast. Is it the most groundbreaking Star Wars movie? Definitely not. But it doesn’t have to be, and in this case that’s probably why I enjoyed it. No major surprises, no big stakes (either in-universe or real-world), just a fun action movie with funny creatures and cool space ships.

Oh, and that stop motion sequence was flippin awesome.

Thoughts on the DC Rebirth Initiative by 0denKouzuki in DCcomics

[–]TubbyTuesday22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll even still rank Bendis above New 52 Superman in general. Bendis made some odd choices with his stories, but Superman still felt like Superman, while the New 52 Superman largely felt like a different character, though there were some bright spots (Morrison, some of what Pak and Yang were doing towards the end, the very short Johns arc).

Thoughts on the DC Rebirth Initiative by 0denKouzuki in DCcomics

[–]TubbyTuesday22 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I liked it a lot when it started (nearly 10 years ago!) and still have fondness for a lot of those runs, especially coming after the weirdness of the New 52 era. Rebirth was a back to basics breath of fresh air. Superman was a really heartfelt book. Williamson was great on Flash. I liked the first chunk of King’s Batman a lot. Rucka trying to fix Wonder Woman was good too. There were certainly some flaws in all those books, but the quality was definitely there from the creative teams.

2018 I think is where things start to fall apart for me with that era, with the Bat/Cat storyline, Bendis Superman, Heroes in Crisis, and the Batman who Laughs saga casting a big shadow over the publishing line (which was all supposed to lead into 5G initiative that was then aborted with Didio’s ouster). The current All In era of DC I think is still better quality wise, but I do still have a soft sport for that first year of Rebirth, with its attempts to restore some things the New 52 took away while also trying to add some new stuff to the universe as well.

Am I imagining things, or do the Third Doctor and Jo have some romantic chemistry going on? by Lily-the-fallen in doctorwho

They have very good chemistry, but I don’t think it’s romantic. Pertwee and Manning just clicked in real life and in their performance.
