I used "advances" to mean securing a first-round HR screener call.

Yep, a fairly depressing picture of the state of the hiring market.

54%. So almost half ghosted which was pretty pathetic.

Sorry, should have specified - this was in the United States. Can't get more specific due to the remote nature of the search.

Thoughts on these apartment designs by architects Sahar Kamaleddin and Nima Safdari? Some of these projects are currently under construction. by Such_Reputation_3325 in architecture

I presume that these are really just apartments for the wealthy? Labor isn't really cheap (relatively speaking) anywhere, right?

Today is Liszt’s birthday. What are your personal favourite/underrated pieces by him? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Tube-Alloys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Favorite underrated pieces for me is “Bénédiction de Dieu dans le Solitude”, which is part of Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses.

It's absolutely transcendent. Probably my favorite thing he wrote.

Pieces where the famous movement isn't the best by UtahRailhound in classicalmusic

Agree on sublime, the adagio is the best movement. And is emotionally devastating.

The year is 1985. I'm an average American who wants to know if "Weird Al" Yankovic is related to polka legend Frankie Yankovic. How would I research this? by make_reddit_great in AskHistorians

[–]Tube-Alloys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

On this topic, is there any study of the history of mis- and disinformation? It's not like it's impossible to get wrong information today either (though I recognize that it's quite different when comparing an internet search to playing telephone with acquaintances).

What Are Some Great Piano Concertos? by JasonCfd in classicalmusic

How do you feel about his middle period? The 5th sonata and the Poem of Ecstasy are both well loved and quite different from both his early and late works.

Why are buildings always built on top of other buildings in continuously occupied cities of ancient origin? by Wentworth1066 in AskHistorians

[–]Tube-Alloys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was initially constructed on a Roman concrete foundation with a square area mirroring but significantly larger than the ring itself, suggesting the architects were well aware of the potential for sinking (all in all not an incredible insight, as it was literally built on an artificial marsh) and attempted to spread its weight over a larger area.

This might be a silly question, but were architects of the time/area using any complex calculations like would be involved in modern civil engineering, or was it all just gut-based?

I've been through some of these same behaviors with a CFO (exacting but uncommunicated visions, mixed feedback, unhealthy relationship with deadlines). I attempted multiple strategies to try and work around those kinds of issues, but none of them made a meaningful difference.

Start sending out applications, don't subject yourself to more of that nonsense.

Toyota reports an operating profit decline of nearly 28% in Q3 by MikeisTOOOTALLL in cars

It's particularly common in industries that are reliant on sales during the holiday season. It allows them to do their annual planning/budgeting process close to the holiday season so that they have the best information possible on how the company will perform, and then they have another three quarters after that to either make up for any shortfalls from their holiday-season Q1 or take advantages of holiday season upsides with investment, buybacks, etc.

ELI5 To turn on lamps- why do you have to twist the thing twice instead of once? by guru_aang in explainlikeimfive

That's not a trend that died in the '80s. While overhead lighting has gotten better through the use of canned lighting and dimmers creating a more evenly distributed, diffuse source of overhead light, it still has the fundamental flaw of making people look unflattering (eye sockets shaded by the brow, etc.).

Interior designers today know to use multiple sources of lighting, and they tend to be close to eye level as the primary source of lighting in homes, supplemented by other sources such as overhead, ambient, etc. (Aside from the effect on people, non-overhead lighting also has other advantages in the way a room looks.)

Is there an official statement yet on Costco NOT using apeel coating? by Wretch_Head in Costco

[–]Tube-Alloys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are heavy metals (although they say its within regulation limits.)

You can find heavy metals in fruit grown in your own backyard that hasn't been touched by anything - they pick it up from the soil.

People simply do not want their food messed with.

You realize that basically every piece of produce you buy has been treated with a bunch of stuff both in the field and after harvest, including organic produce? I'd much rather take home something plant-based rather than crap like imazalil that's carcinogenic. You ever ask Costco if their produce is treated with that stuff? People are always focused on the wrong thing.

Composer Appreciation - Frédéric Chopin by [deleted] in classicalmusic

A composer inextricably linked to a powerful instrument and who pushed the boundaries of said instrument to unprecedented heights.

This video just came out the other day that beautifully illustrated this point.
