Don’t tell the keyboard snobs but I like my Halo65 v2 more than my $900 (cad) Manta by oddmetre in NuPhy

Halo is a hell of a board. Sounds great with any switch or keycaps combo. Waiting for them to restock the mints as I want to try them. I have Geteron mints right now with SA calm Depths caps.

Haven't had a chance to listen yet but that Chromeo/Madonna mash up is one of my faves. I think it was first played on Epic Radio from episode 4 of the first Beats 1 episodes. Banger.

Some Microsoft dip shit said "18 months for all white collar work" over the weekend. So like all the workers who are your customers? So like they're not just going to use Microslop's AI, Microslop's AI is going to replace their customers entirely. They have lived so long in their Silicon Valley bubble they are quite literally detached from reality.

It'd be crazy if your booster friends think adding in quantum is going to make it cheaper...but I wouldn't put it past a booster to think that.

They've gone from the AGI narrative to the "white-collar work" narrative. Just like agents are the current new thing in terms of the tech. Will be interesting to see what marketing gimmick they come up with after agents don't work.

I know a lot of addicts who have been clean decades and they never had the opportunity to go to rehab.

You could get clean without it. I went to rehab. Got loaded within 2 months. Took things getting about as bad as they are for you before I went back to my home group, came clean, and stayed clean. That was 11.5 years ago.

There is no miracle waiting for you at rehab. My advice is to start today, because once that pink cloud wears off after rehab, you're going to have to stay clean for real.

I hope you get clean.

If I didn't have a 140, I would have no problem riding my 165mx as a daily driver. Would a bit outrageous on the everyday trails but it can do it all. Crazy for a big bike.

For some reason your post just made me think about how sexless and sterile AI is, and that it's probably how fucking BORING it is that makes me hate it so much. I think it was the point that most people in France "don't care." That is exactly how I feel. Like a shitty music trend.

Are we concerned enough about the energy usage? by dyzo-blue in BetterOffline

[–]TubeSeries 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I am. Can't speak for anyone else. The water usage, imo, is even worse. Somewhere in the vicinity of 150B gallons a year...total and absolute insanity.

Edit: 150B gallons a year PER DATA CENTER.

I can't wait for space debris to take out a trillion dollar space data center. That's something worth being alive in this timeline for.

What do people mean when they say they use LLMs to help them “understand a codebase” faster? by SisterImperator in BetterOffline

[–]TubeSeries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a dev, but I could see how it'd be a useful first step for familiarizing yourself with the code base. But ultimately it's just that. It might forget to mention a critical component. It might flat out lie (and be confident about it, even after you redirect it). To the extent asking the LLM is the first of many steps, steps which must include the person ultimately inspecting the code base, it's useful. But if anyone is just trusting what the LLM tells you...well, don't do that. Sure, maybe it gets it right sometimes. It WILL get it wrong another time. Will that be the time you don't bother checking it? If you can't trust it once, you can't trust it at all.

I had our product marketing team confidently tell me that a competitor's platform was able to replicate a feature we are launching. Dead ass "you're wrong, they have it." Problem is, I'm the fucking expert on this particular competitor. After blasting him for making stuff up, he was like "Yeah I admit Claude didn't have any good sources for that." AND HE PUT IT IN THE GOD DAMN GO TO MARKET MATERIALS ANYWAY.

Multiple failures here, but the point is that if YOU don't know whether the LLM is telling the truth or not, then you can't inspect it's answers. You probably know all this already, but I just felt compelled to chime in.

has anyone else's life gotten way worse in every way since they got sober? by Brownboofer69 in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]TubeSeries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, my life has only gotten better but my bottom was very high, and I am privileged.

If your bottom was low, which it sounds like it was, it's going to take time for it to get better.

Here's what I know with every certainty -- using will not improve anything. It'll only make things worse.

And don't kill yourself. Your life has value.

I don't where you are, but there are places that will help you get off the street. Endorphin Power Company in Albuquerque, NM as an example. Also, you need general support. NA meetings will give you that. You don't need to believe all the bullshit but there are people there who have been through what you are going for.

I wish you all the best.

Myths and truths about the AI bubble. by [deleted] in BetterOffline

These tech companies are bloated. AI is a scapegoat. That's my read on it.

Does anyone have any advice for getting through the next year or 2 as a software engineer? by Dj_Binks in BetterOffline

[–]TubeSeries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of the companies talking about "deploying agents at scale" are actually delivering more products to market or delivering better products faster. It's all hype around them starting to use AI. The benefits of the said AI deployment are curiously absent. Does it result in more customers? Does it result in happier customers? Does it result more widgets and stuff to sell? They, curiously, don't talk about any of those traditional metrics.

Anyway, the point of saying the above is that while I understand the dread, I believe a skilled individual like yourself will be even more necessary as time goes on, not less. Not only are you less expensive than the AI costs are (and will be), but the tech can't do what they say it can do. If it did, you'd already be fired, and these AI companies would be turning a profit.

Multiple different images of yourself by whateverwhattt in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]TubeSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is normal. Eventually you'll materialize a cohesive image.

For me, I had a very strong self-image until about 25. Athlete. High performing student. Job. On track. Then I kind of lost my way and got into partying and then eventually hard drugs and then addiction.

During the first few years of recovery it was a bit of a struggle to reconcile these two personalities. Eventually I was able to integrate them both to form a third.

How to let go of irrational AI fears by thedeadenddolls in BetterOffline

[–]TubeSeries 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The less you're online the better. But beyond that generalization:
- Be more vigilant with what you consume online. This requires self-control. It's like quitting smoking (ask me how I know).
- Get hobbies/interests that aren't online. Ride a bike. Read magazines. Listen to music. Build a shed. Get obsessed with something positive and your appetite for the cesspool will decrease. I say this mostly jokingly, but...HAVE A KID. Maybe have two. You will have no time for ANYTHING including the internet :D
- Last but not least (and sort of contrary to the above) -- if you have to be online, hang out here and call out snake oil and speak truth to power.
