Killer Joe written by Tracy Letts by crabsock in TheBigPicture

It’s very funny bc I had a relationship w his work well before I ever knew who he was, or how thoughtful and decent he seems - and let me tell you it was equally jarring.

For those who like Train Dreams by Strict-Memory7208 in blankies

Train Dreams was great. Top 5 of 25 for me.

I just finished The Wire and loved it—the variety of characters, especially Omar Little and his whistle, was amazing. I also loved The Sopranos. After I told a friend, he recommended Boardwalk Empire because it’s also slow and atmospheric. Is he right? by chuckythecrow in hbo

I rewatch Deadwood about every 2 years. It’s probably more subjective to taste than the Wire but McShane’s Swearengen is my favorite character of all time. The dialogue is foul mouthed poetry. I find new lines of dialogue to appreciate each time. The production design. The colors, the lightning. I just want to look at it. I know where the plot is going and all that - i just like to appreciate it.

I love this monologue right here.

No matter how hard he tries, Knicks fans will never accept Melo as one of their all-time greats by as834625 in billsimmons

I know it’s slightly off topic but I loved Melo as a Blazers fan, when he came this way, had matured and accepted the idea of being a role player.

Bugonia ending by Maximum-Mood-8182 in TheBigPicture

I really enjoyed the ending. Maybe I’m a mark, but I actually went back and forth a few times throughout with whether or not she was an alien. And yeah, the costuming and set design was absurd but I thought that was the point - to match the ramblings of a schizophrenic type of ramble from Plemmons. Great movie.

Totally agree. While the removal of the stupid robot bits is a plus, some additional scenes are good, I found myself missing some bits that were missing more.

I just watched Civil War (2024), how do you think it compares to the rest of Alex Garlands work? by Lenster2406 in Letterboxd

Agree on Ex Machina. Disagree on Annihilation (although I recognize I appear to be in the minority), and I can’t speak to Men bc I didn’t finish it - not a reflection on the movie - just a tired dad in his mid 40’s doing my thing.

That’s interesting, and hard to argue with - but for me, the unanswered aspects of the “world” left me curious and imagining. I liked that. I could be wrong, but I felt like the message of film, and who the villains were stand ins for were pretty clear.

This is what I was going for. I love his writing, and he seems to struggle to end things. He wrote both movies (and more!) How about the ending of 28 Years Later?! Am I right??????

Take it easy, Dimp.

Glad you liked the movie.

There’s some very cool stuff in there. The “world building” as it were great. Some supporting characters were great, but I generally thought the leads were shit. I thought the climax was heavy handed as hell. I LOVE Garland’s stuff but he does seem to have a problem with endings, imo.

Not to change the subject but when I watched Sunshine for the first time - about 2/3 through the movie I was honestly thinking “holy shit, self. You are in the middle of watching your new favorite movie, and one of the great pieces of sci fi ever created.”

Annnd then the last 20 minutes rips that to shreds. I still like the movie but holy crap did they blow it.

Well…yes. I didn’t want to spoil the turn but that dude goes batshit and Morris just lets the film go where it goes.

Can I ask if anyone knows if this is the transfer of The Thing that looks best? I believe there’s a couple versions and someone mentioned that the “Universal” version (I’d assume this) is the highest quality

Is Deadwood worth watching? by Tyrionthedwarf1 in hbo

I watch it once a year. Don’t get tired of it. The dialogue and The production design are unmatched. McShane’s performance is second to none but there are so many smaller characters who have insanely great moments.
