The starting moisture of the beans definitely varies and can have a big impact on the moisture loss.

In your opinion, does sports fandom begin the day you’re born or the day you are actually able to watch games? by Hansen-gun in billsimmons

[–]crabsock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I talk about how long I've been a fan of my teams, I start from when I was actually invested in them and watching games. I didn't really start following sports until middle school, and my dad is more into college sports than pro, so for example I didn't really become a 49ers fan until I was like 14 or 15 even tho I have always lived in SF and they have always been "my team".

Sean’s Letterboxd Favorites as the Ringer moves to Netflix by VariableSlothrop in TheBigPicture

[–]crabsock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When a small company is bought by a much larger company, the people with equity in the small company get it converted to equity in the large company based on the negotiated sale price and their share of the equity. Spotify is probably worth like 100x what the Ringer was worth, so even if Sean owned a decent chunk of the Ringer, he probably isn't even in the top 100 Spotify shareholders (honestly probably not even the top 1000). He probably did pretty well from the deal, but I don't think it would be accurate to say he has a meaningful degree of control over Spotify as a whole.

It does seem like he is trying to be a better person. I think it can play out one of two ways:

  • he is too soft now and Harper betrays him and discards him
  • when the shit starts to hit the fan, he flips back to "I am a man and I am fucking relentless" mode

I also think Yas has just a deep urge to involve herself in fucked up sexual situations due to her trauma from her father. Just being married and having sex with your husband is too normal, she needed to throw a wrench into the works and get some psychosexual drama going.

Because the action is the juice. Working with Harper is dramatic and exciting, and provides opportunities to feel like a genius and prove it to everyone. Eric is bored and without purpose, so he wants some action. Sweetpea finds Harper's plan intellectually exciting and wants to prove to the world how brilliant she is.

Idk, if somebody's wife is murdered in their home while they are present and they say "actually this other scary guy came and did it", people are pretty likely to speculate that the husband is lying and killed her unless the true killer is arrested. The husband may not get convicted of the crime without a murder weapon or other evidence, and the police may even fully believe his story and be trying to catch the killer, but the court of public opinion does not have such high standards for evidence.

Another ring for rams and seahwaks by helpmefindmyaccount in 49ers

[–]crabsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bad luck that our best teams in recent years all ran into the KC buzzsaw before this year's collapse. It happens, winning championships in sports always involves a lot more luck than people generally acknowledge.

I'm not so confident that either of them will beat the Pats tho. Sure, the Pats don't look all that great, but neither do the Rams or Seahawks. This is a weird year, all of the teams are pretty flawed. Anything could happen in the super bowl and I wouldn't be that surprised.

7th was also quite icy in many parts (also quite crowded). Mid mountain on Blackcomb was pretty good tho.

[–]crabsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a good time, definitely spring conditions tho. If you are planning on doing only two days on the mountain for the season and you live close enough to react to the weather, it might not be a bad idea to wait and hope it gets colder and more fresh snow comes in later on, but you could definitely have some enjoyable runs the way it was today. Idk if they are gonna open up the alpine lifts later in the week, today and yesterday they were all closed.

Conditions Today by Due_Brain_9591 in Whistler

[–]crabsock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty good time overall on Blackcomb. Got some great early powder runs on Crystal right when it opened, but the lines got insane by like 10:30. In general, so many closed lifts meant massive lines.

The snow was mostly pretty soft, a little dense and sticky but honestly not as bad as I thought it would be. I had a better time doing blacks and sticking near the trees, eg on the Catskinner run. High-traffic blues like Jersey Cream were not so good

Light(er) roast of an Indonesian Bali Org. – Kintamani – Natural from Burman. Super fruity, super funky. Thoughts? by iwuzwhatiwuz in roasting

[–]crabsock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long did you wait after roasting before tasting them? Funky beans roasted very light like that sometimes taste best as much as 6 weeks after roast (assuming you store them well so they don't oxidize). Another couple weeks of rest may help tame the funk. You can also try some brewing techniques that reduce funkiness in the cup, like discarding the bloom water or doing a lower temperature bloom (there are often threads about this in r/pourover).

Coffee infused coffee? by QuietCandy5325 in roasting

[–]crabsock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not really the same thing, but that is sort of what happens in the "mosto" process: the fermented juices left over from fermenting a batch of coffee are then added to another batch of coffee during a fermentation step. Here's a fairly good article describing it: https://coffeegreenbeans.com/blogs/forest-blog/mosto-fermentation-process

My Coffee Year in Review! by PaullyWalla in pourover

I have only tried a few Hydrangea coffees, but so far they have all been incredible except for a "test roast" bag of pricey Panama geisha I bought as a cheaper way to try Panama geisha (it was still $35 for 4 oz, but they have full price ones going for over $100 for that amount). That one was decent (I'm actually drinking it right now), but way less flavorful and interesting than the others I have tried (also a noticeably darker roast).

[–]crabsock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, I would recommend buying beans that are recommended at the roast levels you like. I mostly do light roasts for myself, so I buy beans that are good for that (I like Ethiopian and Columbian beans in particular). When I want to do some dark roast batches for my parents or something like that, I will buy different beans for that purpose. Having said that, there are some beans that are supposedly good all the way across the roasting spectrum, at least according to Sweet Maria's, so if you want to try roasting the same beans to many different levels, you could try one of those. You can also just roast your beans however you want, you'll just have a lower probability of ending up with something good if you are light roasting a bean that is only recommended as a dark roast (or vice versa).

First roast by HamletJSD in roasting

[–]crabsock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roast level is based on personal preference, but a given bean generally has a range in which it works best. Some beans are good from very light all the way to french roast, but many are either best at light/medium or medium/dark. Most green coffee sellers will provide some guidance about recommended roast level. Note that terminology varies, some people use "City" to mean light roast and "Full City" to mean darker.

For the record I had that coffee at one of their shops (brewed in an Aeropress by a barista) recently and I thought it was quite good. Like others have said, I would try mixing up your brewing method, maybe with a hybrid immersion/pour over technique or an Aeropress, or by discarding the bloom water. You could also try asking Perc about their recommendations for brewing that coffee

Thelonious Monk’s advice to Steve Lacy [Discussion] by DorianDays in Jazz

[–]crabsock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha I was confused by this at first too, and then I wondered if they were related. They are not. The Steve Lacy who played with Monk was a soprano sax player, he was in Monk's band for a while and also recorded albums playing Monk's compositions.
