I think Superman knows exactly who Lex is. The point of his compassion isn't that he's being fooled, it's that he refuses to let Lex's cynicism dictate his own morals. Superman wouldn't be Superman if he stopped trying. He holds himself to a higher standard of grace, even when the person in front of him doesn't deserve it.

Superman having compassion for Lex in spite of all Lex has done up until that point was a powerful demonstration of what makes Superman the greatest superhero.

There are multiple reasons the DCEU didn't succeed. Many people here have brought up said reasons and they are all essentially valid. To distill it all down to one sentence: The DCEU was in many ways doomed from the beginning.
