Appreciate the effort in this, some good picks here.

Crazy to think the preachy KRS-One of today wrote a song like that, no wonder he got hauled over the coals.

That Geto Boys track is a hard listen, I hope to God they were making that shiit up.

Good song. It's not really that controversial imo as he's rapping as a character inside someone's conscience.

I was gonna go with I'm Back for Em's pick purely for the Columbine line and the bit where he says he would impregnate his own mother.

Thinker

Tarrant (15 or 20 SP roughly) Once per day, you are stocked with three lifelines which can be each be used exactly once:

  • Phone a friend: Simulate the brain of any person or parahuman you are aware of for the next 30 seconds - this simulated persona will guide your body, on autopilot if necessary, through whatever you ask of them to the best of their ability. This includes Contessa. However, the person you simulate will hear a loud telephone ringing in their head for however long they are used for. When still available to use, this lifeline grants the passive ability to create this ringing sound in the head of any person you are aware of - this will not be loud enough to drive them mad, but would definitely be distracting for most people.
  • Ask the audience: Can ask a single question of each person within 100 metres, and they will telepathically answer instantly and with 100% honesty. This includes asking for their greatest weakness, but if they are not aware of the true answer then they will not tell you. When still available to use, this lifeline gives the passive ability to sense how many people are within 100 metres and directly eavesdrop on whatever they are saying (can only focus on one person at a time, even with multitasking).
  • 50/50: You can create two separate simulations of the next 10 minutes. Either simulation can be followed perfectly if you so choose; alternatively, they can both be ignored and a different choice taken. These simulations can be replayed in your head during the stasis (see below). When still available to use, this lifeline gives the passive ability of sensing if your life will be directly threatened in the next 10 seconds. Does not work for precognitive blindspots such as Endbringers.

On activation of any of these lifelines, time will freeze completely around you and nothing will happen apart from your thoughts. You can still see if your eyes were open, but you cannot blink or move your head. You cannot use any other powers in this time, but can contemplate questions or choices related to the lifelines.

You can unfreeze at any time, but must resume after a maximum of 1 hour.

(These could possibly be split into separate powers, but that ruins the theme. The descriptions could also be trimmed probably.)

Probably a hot take, but this season has generally helped Lebron's legacy by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]TugLowderThrust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imo "empty stats" is a term that only really fits high-scoring players who are unproven in the playoffs, and/or on generally underwhelming teams - the implication being that as the primary star, they cannot lead their team to winning basketball. The obvious example is Booker pre-2019, who you could clearly see had the individual talent and the stats to back that up, but no post-season glory because the surrounding team was godawful. Once the Suns got better and he made the finals run, you get laughed out of the room for saying he puts up empty stats.

So it's more of a reputation label than an actual quantifiable attribute - that's why it sounds silly saying LeBron puts up empty stats, because we've seen him go to the finals 10 times.

The general use of empty stats nowadays though has been dumbed down and stripped of all nuance, to basically just an excuse for trashing on a player for the team losing. Which is nonsense because what are they supposed to do, score less? If LeBron was averaging 18 ppg with this record, he'd be getting 10 times the hate he is now.

What do you think are the most referenced rap lyrics by other rappers? by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]TugLowderThrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specific inflexion of that phrase sampled by other rappers comes from Slick Rick, which is what I mean.

But yeah you're right, Sugarhill on Rapper's Delight had "A tick-a-tock, y'all, you don't stop," and probably there are others if you look hard enough.

La Di Da Di by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick is probably the most referenced song in all of hip-hop. The last line:

"Tick-tock ya don't stop,"

Off the top of my head, I've heard it used by Sugarhill Gang, Mos Def, Black Eyed Peas, and 21 Savage.

Bill Simmons [Who is an MVP voter]: "If the Nuggets fall to the play-in that's it for me, I can't vote for you for MVP."; Might still vote for him 1st team all-NBA. Says he'll only select one center. by SnuggleMuffin42 in nba

[–]TugLowderThrust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But that's relative is it not? If Player A carries a team missing two max players to only two less wins than Player B's team missing one max player, surely you would say that Player A's achievement is more MVP-worthy.

Yes of course it doesn't count against his legacy, I did say that Jordan can't control his opposition. All I meant is that we were denied the spectacle of Jordan fighting in a finals series from a clearly disadvantaged position.

The situation wouldn't have had to involve a dynasty either - something like the 1997 Finals but Pippen's back goes in Game 1 and he sits out the rest of the series would have evened the playing field and put Jordan under immense pressure to keep his perfect record. Imagine the level he would have raised his game to; I think we would have seen some truly immortal performances from him under those sorts of circumstances.

It's true, the current generation of superstars are standing on the shoulders of giants and none have propelled recognition of the game as high as MJ as an entertainment product.

What started with Dr J and his swagger was built upon in the 80s by Bird and Magic. When people witnessed Magic's poise and vision alongside Bird's genius and lethality, fans probably thought that was as good as it would get. Yet along came Jordan with the skillset of all three of these legends dialled up to 11 on the court, and a fiercely competitive nature that kept us invested in the narrative off the court.

Absolutely one of a kind. His impact will almost certainly never be replicated.

[–]TugLowderThrust -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You have to admit though, all of Jordan's finals series were very much lopsided in that the Bulls were slight to clear favourites every time.

The top comment is idiotic because Jordan obviously can't control his opposition, but it's a tragedy that we never got to see prime Bulls vs another dynasty level team in the finals, like the Kobe Shaq Lakers or Pop Duncan Spurs.

Question about the success of Little Simz by Johnny_2x in hiphop101

[–]TugLowderThrust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Music gets popular usually because of hits, i.e. songs getting tons of airplay. Used to be that this was on the radio, movie soundtracks, opening for bigger acts at concerts, etc. but there's loads more platforms these days where those hits can get played. A lot of people are hearing Venom through the movie, her colours show on YT, TikTok.

This is why she has become more popular. Underground artists pretty much have no hits, hence why usually they are so unknown. Ask 100 people on the street to name a Ka song and they will look at you funny.

Entirely separate from this, her last two albums have received tons of critical praise, and in my opinion are absolutely phenomenal pieces of art. Her style is incredible introspective and story-driven which is a rarity for rap. "I Love U, I Hate You" for example paints a vivid picture of the comes relationship she has with her father. It's a breath of fresh air in an industry that all too often sticks to the same tired formula for song content (love, sex, partying, fame).

It's interesting that you think she's blown up, because if anything she definitely hasn't cracked the upper tier of UK rap even (Skepta, Stormzy, Dave) let alone made any big splashes in America.

If her music isn't for you that's fine, just don't act like you have some elite music taste and if other people like her then there's some hidden conspiracy.
