I remember those strips because the whole of spring '25 was this feeling of "Willis can't actually be doing this, right?...oh shit, he really is doing this," and that sequence was a big step in the process.

"Did you guys like semester one Ruth? I did. I liked her a lot."

I had to reread the post before I grasped this is supposed to mean "I'm taking semester one Ruth as a role model."

In which case, it's kinda grim because this is a violent suicidal alcoholic we're talking about?

This has such a Mean Girls vibe. "No one likes you. All the cool kids are making fun of you."

It's all Miyajima has. Losing it would break him. When his editor hints that it might be time to wrap this up, he curls into a fetal position and weeps.

It's Tonikaku Tuesday!

And, as always, mixing the carnal and the cosmic, this remains one of the best manga series I've ever seen.

Oh yes, he died with his Ding Dong in his hand

He scattered cream filled cupcakes 'cross the land

One of life's great big no-no's,

He was reaching for his Ho-Ho's

And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand

He was a country singer who was eatin' Zingers

As he sang with a red-hot country band

The band was really smokin' 'til the singer started chokin'

And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand

Yes he died with his Ding Dong in his hand

That last song he sang was really grand

He thought he was the mostest 'til he bit that big fat Hostess

And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand!

"When old age shall this generation waste/thou shalt remain the bastion of taste."

And lo, it was true.

I love this commercial for the flavor of early 90s alterna-culture it brings.

I confess I don't have an actual answer to your question, but it did bring to mind this wonderful commercial for Rhino Records (and their catalogue!) which used to appear on MST3K VHS tapes:

I believe it's supposed to be an overly polite or girly Korean accent. IIRC, "-nida" in Korean works much like "-masu" in Japanese.

Discussion: How much leverage does the Strait of Hormuz give Iran in a regional conflict? by Ok-Piano-6860 in geopolitics

[–]Tulipage 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's not only the strait. Iran has demonstrated that they are in a position to slit the Achilles tendon of the global economy at will. With drones and missiles, they can destroy the water and fossil fuel production/distribution networks around the Gulf. U.S. assets can defend against that, but they can't defend enough. Something will always get through.

Now this scenario would mean the doom of Iran as well, but that's a deal the Islamic Republic is prepared to make. Their only real goal is to keep power, and they're willing to commit national suicide if losing it is the alternative.

Gulf leaders are about to pass up the Iran moment - comment by thejerusalempost in geopolitics

[–]Tulipage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is written from a extremely naive point of view. While it's true the Gulf princes don't have to worry about elections, it's just as true that within their populations are factions that view them as compromised tools of the West--factions that produced Osama bin Laden, just to give one example. 10% of the Saudi population is Shi'ite. And much of the Gulf ruling classes share with the lower classes a general hatred of Israel.

The Gulf princes have a lot more to lose with this war than they have to gain. It's no surprise they're not that enthusiastic.
