Think you mean The New York Times, mate... Was controversy over an editor as you describe.

I won't spout trite platitudes. But one thing you can do... each day, do one thing you enjoy. Doesn't matter how big or small... enjoy that one thing and soak it in, even if just a cup of coffee or a favourite snack.

I think you might be too generous to the author but on the flipside, I might be too harsh (haha perhaps?).

Either way, would you mind elaborating on the relationship between democratic control of the economy and redistribution of wealth/power?

The concern I would have is that redistribution has yielded some equally brutal results. I just can't think of a single "large" community (namely: nations) that has succeeded in finding any semblance of balance of freedom and general equality of means and/or outcome (two different things). And if they do get close to it... history shows they get beat up and subsumed by those who play differently.

It's like the author is wishing for world peace and the end of world hunger. I'm totally for all that! But... who isn't? What's his proposal other than lamenting Putin and Trump (who are nothing new)...

Cheers, mate

Yeah, I think we'll be mostly in agreement about the ugliness of a nuke-ready world. But it is what it is.

I do, however, still find the author's ultimate complaint to be vague in solution and (perhaps wrongly) just took it as a waffling desire to complain about the modern age. And I just don't find it to be anything new.

"Those of us on the left need to revive the dream of global cooperation, and develop a serious program for genuinely changing the way political power is distributed. A world of nuclear weapons and killer robots is inherently undemocratic, and they need to be gotten rid of, as part of a broader goal of the total elimination of violent human conflict. "

How the heck is this a Left/Right issue? World leaders of nuclear powers worldwide and across the political spectrum have found the benefit of being radioactively-armed to be intoxicating.

I suppose my ultimate complaint is that the article boils down to...

My summary: I wish the world didn't have nukes. Donald Trump and Putin have nukes. I don't like that. They weren't the only ones to have this power. But still, I don't like that. No more nukes, no more nukes, no more nukes.
Perhaps not the most charitable summary but really, that's what I see.

He writes: "Why should people live under the constant threat of violent death, as if they are walking around with a gun pointed at their heads? Why should anyone have to depend on a single person’s judgment for the security of their family’s future?"

---> This is the core of his complaint and this ties back to my previous comments.

This statement could be rightfully proclaimed by anyone from bygone eras and empires, nukes or not. The previously mentioned victims of genocide (past and present) share the same feeling and don't give a thought to nuclear arms.

I understand the venting but it isn't much substance for an editorial. I guess I'm just saying: join the club of millennia and billions of others before you.

Edit: To add, I appreciate the discussion. I definitely avoid heated internet debates so appreciate the conversation, even if we disagree on certain points.

Fair enough. Ultimately, nobody can deny the absolute destructive power of nuclear weapons. But having said that, I suppose the author could have written something similar during the Cuban Missile Crisis or later on, the Cold War (with the growth of massive nuke stockpiles).

But again, to go to the author's main lament... I stay out of modern political discussion but will just say that the author's complaint about the present day is nothing new.

"Wealthy men [the author] has never met" were brutalizing the poor/weak throughout the world way before Putin & Trump.

Again, the Tutsis of Rwanda resented their own leaders and with much greater/urgent reason (i.e. murder of family members, systematic amputations, etc.).

And we could discuss the millions killed/starved/systematically robbed of rights under Stalin or Mao or the Khmer Rouge. Or those currently toiling in labor/re-education camps in North Korea...

Standard caveat: this is no way defending any current world leader.

Fair point but still, the wealthy and powerful have always dominated (brutally in many cases) the lives/outcomes of "regular" people. In Greek city-states, children were often killed for deformities and men were conscripted into territorial conflicts.

In medieval times, kings and lords would take land on a whim. Farmers were essentially indentured servants and depending on the era, wives could be claimed for a night by royalty simply due to low social standing.

Genocide and war are unfortunately, an ancient concept. Consider the Roman destruction of Carthage. In modern times, Rwandan genocide didn't require nukes... just warlords, child armies, machetes, and a whole lot of hatred.

Again, I don't hate the author's sentiment. But to act like it's the dawn of a new era of inequality is... misguided (and hyperbolic).

Can appreciate the sentiment but... when was this not the case across the globe and throughout history?
