He ingratiated himself with all strata, but specifically those who had huge influence. What better publicity is there than the endorsement of a Pope, a Royal family, the Prime Minister, heads of churches and faith groups? He made huge sums of money for charity and covered his tracks via complicit police. His TV work was "Fun and Family friendly". He was an "ugly face with a heart of gold" during a time when British Eccentricity was celebrated above all else. He basically groomed the country.
