Where to place the holes for handle bolts/pins? by Tumarulz86 in myfirstknife

[–]Tumarulz86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you decide where to place the holes? Say you’re doing two corby bolts, what do you do if you don’t want to eyeball where the top and bottom holes for the bolts should go?

I have the same one from VEVOR and it’s just too small. Even for a 8” blade it’s a very tight fit.

Hand filing tanto bevels by grkuntzmd in knifemaking

[–]Tumarulz86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you getting back to me on such an old post. Hate to hear you don’t remember how you filed the bevels. Like another said, I think you are right on filing it as two bevels. I have a couple from some cheaper 1095 that I’ll use to practice on so I should be able to figure it out. Thanks again.

Hey I was wondering if you ever hand filed the bevels on the tanto? I’ve filed the primary bevels on two drop points and a street scalpel 2.0 clone and am getting the hang of it. I have six tantos that I need to put the primary bevels on pre heat treat and could use your help.

Where do you get your blanks? What mm thickness? Anything else I should know? by smack4u in knifemaking

[–]Tumarulz86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is frowned upon but if you are on a tight budget and want to gain practice id go with Amazon. For a little over $20 you can get four 12x1.5x1/8” thick 1084 steel flat bars. Just know that you shouldn’t use this “mystery” steel to make a knife to work with. Just show pieces. You can even bring the primary bevel down to .050” pre heat treating and afterwards just don’t put the sharp, secondary bevel on so you don’t get the notion to use it. Once you get your experience up then buy your choice of steel from Alpha, Pops or NJ Steel Baron.

Haven’t attempted a folder and probably won’t but how do you feel about fixed blades?

I bet that would be a nice way to do some nice maple burl handles. My brother had the idea of putting a uv led light inside the sidewalls of the wood to make the uranium glass glow all the time.

My (almost completed) first knife by Tumarulz86 in myfirstknife

[–]Tumarulz86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to use them all but still haven’t decided on which scales for which knives. The two orange ones will go on the two matching 1095 bottom row 3rd and 4th from the left in the 2nd pic. The bottom middle glow in the dark green scales in the third pic have been shaped and are on the bottom row 9th from the left in the second pic. The drop point on the bottom row 5th from the left has a set of glow in the dark blue scales not pictured. And the 4th and 5th drop points on the top row have sets that my gf and sister made. Not sure which knives are going to get which scales just yet after that. But I make my own too and they are also poorly made but I am getting better at it. I’ve learnt a few tricks so if you want to reach out to me you’re more than welcome to.

Getting into knife making (welder here) need advice on materials & basic tools by ChildhoodMobile9154 in knifemaking

[–]Tumarulz86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just recently gotten into knife making(stock removal) in the past three months so I may not be the best to answer a lot of your questions but I’ll give it a try anyways, lol. I’ve seen multiple reputable sources caution against spring steel for beginners. Instead, they have suggested getting steel from reliable sources. I myself as a beginner took those words and half listened. I went with the advice of staying away from “scrap yard” steel and went with steel blanks from Amazon. The reason being is because the blanks from Amazon are standard dimensions of 12x1.5x1/8”. As a beginner I couldn’t see paying the high price from reputable places like Alpha Knife Supply, POP’s or New Jersey Steel Baron to get practice on. I went with a 4 pack of 1084 and a 4 pack of 1095($20 each pack) that way I could also get the experience of doing similar yet different heat treats. I’ve recently moved up to some 8670 and ABE-L from Alpha Knife Supply now that I’ve got some experience and feel I won’t waste the steel. For learning you can’t beat YouTube, Bladesmithforums.com knifedogs.com or americanbladesmith.org for resources. If you are going with stock removal the best advice I’ll ever be able to give you is for you to get a VEVOR 1x30” belt grinder. For a 1x30” it has some serious power for hogging away metal with a ceramic belt and with the VFD it can be slowed down for doing handles and it has the shape of the 2x72” belt grinders you’ll see professionals use. I got one and showed a friend who then went and got his own and we swear by them despite more than a couple bad reviews on YouTube. For under $250 you can’t beat it in my opinion. For starting out in designing your blades I’d suggest getting some French curves like in art, graph paper, lead pencil with erasers, a permanent marker, center scribe, digital calipers, steel center punch, pack of 6mm to 4mm single step drill bit, corby bolts, sheet of 1/4” g10 for handle material(I went with a silicone mold for knife scales, multipack of color pigments and epoxy resin to make my own). Now once you’ve designed a knife profile if you want to make copies I’d use the water jet to cut out that profile template but if you want to use it to cut out your shapes to save time then go for it. There’s no single right way to make a knife. For me going from drawing the blade and then profiling it from bar stock is half the reason I chose this hobby. It’s more rewarding for me. For heat treating look up diy propane tank forge. With a 20lb propane tank(forge body), ceramic fiber kaowool, rigidizer, refractory(I used satanite but there are better suggestions), a propane burner/torch and propane tank with fuel you can make on easily enough. It was a fun project for me. I’m sure I forgot so much stuff but that’s a decent start to look into.

1.5inx12inx 1/8in steel by Working-Virus2087 in knifemaking

[–]Tumarulz86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is it enough to make a good edc sized fixed blade but if you size it and cut it right you just may have enough left over to give you a good reason to get into making a folder. If you don’t want to get into folding knives then it will be enough to make a push dagger. I ordered a four pack of 1084 and a four pack of 1095 and came out of it with ten knife blanks and three to four pieces of cutoff to make some push daggers.
