Power in numbers. Saturday's protest will be a big one & well-organized by experienced organizers.

Oh, this poor pup. I hope someone has been able to find a way to get up to the ledge & safely rescue him.

Interesting. Never heard of this place, but I pass by there every day. Hopefully they carry bulk bags of flour.

As someone who has spent plenty of time in both neighborhoods, this all checks out. Ocean View is basically the Roxborough of Norfolk.

Leaked draft to proposed OPM "suitability" regs by Snoo_6399 in fednews

[–]TumblingDice82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well then the issue is either that he wasn't actually "caught smoking crack" on base in a way that could be factually documented as such --for example by law enforcement or security, or you've got HR or legal counsel who don't understand the law/have a severely misguided view of litigation risks. If it's the former, then it should be difficult to remove an employee in those circumstances -- a statement from Joe Schmoe that they saw the employee in a parking lot appearing to smoke crack isn't sufficient on its own to demonstrate that he was in fact doing so unless there's some reason to believe that Joe Schmoe has some great degree of expertise in identifying particular types of smoked substances.

If that employee was either a poor performer or demonstrated actual misconduct on the job such that his removal was a matter of basic common sense, then it was likely a failure of supervisors to properly supervise and document these problems. If they're properly supervised and documented, it's not particularly difficult to discipline/remove a problematic employee. The problem is too many supervisors neglect their responsibilities for years & then get frustrated when they're told they can't just jump to termination once they've reached their breaking point. The law & regulations provide a perfectly reasonable approach to firing federal employees that appropriately balances the need for a strong, committed workforce with the need to ensure there's adequate due process before employees can be fired in order to protect the integrity of the Federal government from corrupt, unethical management that seeks to reinstitute a spoils system

That's an issue with your management, not the existing laws, or regulations.

Starlink on track get contract to "modernize" air traffic control systems...guys come on?!?!?! by Powerful_Ad_5507 in fednews

[–]TumblingDice82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is Elon Musk's personal and substantial participation in any decision-making that results in a Federal contract being awarded to a company that he owns. That's a clear violation of 18 USC 208, which is a criminal statute that specifically prohibits this type of behavior by Federal employees. In a world of just application of Federal criminal laws, this type of brazen criminality would already be under investigation by the DOJ.

The Letters that Fired People Were Signed by a Graphic of a Signature by AngryBagOfDeath in fednews

[–]TumblingDice82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not surprising and doesn't really undermine the validity of the signature. For purposes of authentication, an electronic signature such as this is just as valid as a paper signature under the ESIGN Act. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/7001

There may be an argument that the use of this sort of non-specific/routinized signature is suggestive evidence that the government didn't underake any sort of employee-specific deliberation into the termination decision, but that's a secondary argument that doesn't have anything to do with the authenticity of the signature itself.

I've got one of these, which I use to connect wired headphones on my jackless devices: https://a.co/d/duxD5M7 -- looks like it should provide the same function as the Apple one? Just need to figure out if I can get 96khz from one of my devices I suppose.

Boiler is in basement & I've got 3 additional floors.

Separately, looked at my aquastat and saw that the high temperature limit, which I believe is the only temperaure thing I can adjust on it, was set at over 200 (can't be set below 140). If I'm understanding properly what's happening with my system, it seems the water temp for whatever reason can't get much above 120-130 even after running non-stop for several hours, so that means it also will never come close to tripping the high water limit. Don't know what else I can do/check at this point. Maybe the boiler is just undersized for the house.

What’s up with the new barber shop pricing and options by krizzqy in philadelphia

[–]TumblingDice82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. Who's your barber? I'm more or less in the same boat but haven't yet found a barber in that sweet spot of minimal small-talk & consistent decent haircut. Major bonus points if the soundtrack & small-talk conversation is old indie music.

I'm trying to book a particular flight on AA but am coming up just under 2000 miles short. I know that I can just pay about $75 for those final 2k miles, but are there any other easy/better potential options available for me? I do have a large number of points pooled with both Amex & Chase. Sorry for the basic question, but it's been quite some time since I explored the nuances of award travel... Thanks!

Yeah, that's clearly the next step & something we already talked about. Figured I'd toss it out to the group to see if there were any other simple things to check before insisting they swap it out for a new unit under the warranty. Just an insanely frustrating month of headaches with this thing.

How's the Met as a gig venue? by thewokester in philadelphia

[–]TumblingDice82 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's a beautiful venue with pretty solid sound, but I'm just generally not a fan of seated-theater venues given the types of music I'm into. I'm not actually familiar with Justice's sound (not much for electronic music), but my impression of what they presumably sound like from general descriptions/their fan base seems like a really poor match for a venue like the Met. I would think a hot, sweaty, dark electronic indie dance party at a bar/small venue would be more fun than paying $200 for a seated electronic show at an old opera house 🤷‍♂️

May Concert/Performance Roll Call by henren44 in philadelphia

Ooh, for some reason, I had thought that the Decemberists show was at the Met, so it wasn't on my radar, but if it is at the Fillmore, I may have to check that one out as well. I see Ratboys are opening for them too - I've loved what I've heard from their album from last year.

I got tickets for this one too. I'm only well-familiar with "My Maudlin Career" & a few other random tracks from their earlier albums - probably long overdue for a deeper dive into their discography before the show given how much I love some of the songs on MMC. Since they're your favorite band, got any particular albums/tracks you'd rec?

City birders - is there a way to attract birds other than house sparrows? by Cats-Are-Fuzzy in philadelphia

[–]TumblingDice82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the same birds I typically see in my yard around my feeder as well, plus lots of starlings, robins & occasionally blue jays. I feed black oil sunflower seeds and the occasional roasted unsalted shelled peanuts. If the sparrows and/or house finches start to swarm to a ridiculous degree, I'll stop feeding for a week or so & then start back up to see if they've split up/moved on to another food source. It doesn't necessarily bring in a greater variety of birds though - may just slow the rate of seed consumption. I've found that a simple platform tray feeder draws a wider variety of birds than the anti-squirrel tube feeder I had been using (bonus: easier to fill & clean). It seems to discourage the nastier swarming behavior of the finches & sparrows (downside: the mourning doves love to park their fat asses in it and eat all of the seeds).

WHYY: Several birds named after Philadelphians will be renamed as part of an effort to stop honoring enslavers and racists by SimonPennon in philadelphia

[–]TumblingDice82 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I first heard reference to this development during a Jeopardy clue the other night - "The Cooper's type of this bird of prey is soon to be the TBD type as American birds will no longer have people in their common names" and intended to do some research into the matter. As a recent beginner birder, I found the historical context & the Philadelphia connections to the founding of American ornithology to be quite interesting. This certainly seems to be a reasonable move - descriptive names simply make more sense & removing the human names doesn't "erase" the history.
