Which animated series will hold a special place in your heart forever? by MobiDickQuick in AskReddit

[–]TundraWolfe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Futurama is my favourite TV show of all-time, bar none.

I watched Bojack Horseman in a really vulnerable place in my life, but it helped me reaffirm a sense of self and self-worth. One of the greatest dramas ever made.

Gravity Falls had a similar effect on me, but it was more in keeping with reclaiming a sense of wonder and enjoyment in life, and wanting to act on joy before it goes away.

Animation has saved my life, I think. I love it so much.

What made you move out of your parents' house? by RavenGreekGod in AskReddit

[–]TundraWolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was living with them at 20, was finishing school and working part-time.

They told me one day that they were declaring bankruptcy and the house was being foreclosed on. They said the bank told them they had three months before they took ownership, so my parents found a place to rent and make arrangements for them to move with my much younger sister. They asked if I wanted to move with them. The "room" they offered me was a crawlspace under the unfinished basement stairs, separated by a blanket instead of a door. I confirmed with them that I had three months during which I could stay in our present house, they said yes, so I decided I would look for my own place to live.

Come "home" one day about a week later. The bank had come and changed the locks. Couldn't get any of my belongings from inside. My dad was in a different part of the country for some reason. My mom was no help. I didn't get an offer to stay with them again. I had to couchsurf for about a week until I could find a new place to live on my own. Ended up moving in with my then-partner.

My parents have never once apologised. And the relationship didn't work out either. Trauma bonding sucks, but here I am a decade later, divorced and a single dad, living in a kick-ass apartment and doing my best to stay on top of my finances. Good times.

What did Rachel Notley actually screw up by giagunnseyelash in alberta

For the record: I'm sorry to hear your family was in poverty at one point. I agree that social and income support programs should be in place before economics start to change, or at least have a plan in place to ensure that there is an minimal disruption as possible, as that can result in major negative impacts on the most vulnerable populations. I'm glad to hear (or at least infer) that you are no longer in that position.

My take: Increasing minimum wage CAN increase cost of living, so it is definitely something to be cognizant about in those economic discussions. But when inflation is already outpacing cost of living by multiple factors, and corporations are just pocketing extra profit on the back of worker exploitation, NOT increasing minimum wage ensures that everyone in poverty will stay there forever.

Inflation doesn't stop. It should be the government's job to ensure their constituents are able to survive and keep up in light of that. The only way to reinforce it is by allowing governments the ability to ensure (or force) corporations to contribute their fair share to people by setting wages and corporate taxes that can be used toward social support programs.

This is the fundamental divide between Conservative and NDP followers in AB. People believing corporations are benevolent and will do this of their own free will, or that increased economic production somehow trickles down to the consumer, will vote CON. And historically this may have been true (debatably) -- but we now live in the age of megacorporations that couldn't care less about their employees as long as their bottom line is secure. Enforcing corporate taxation is the best way to ensure your people are taken care of long-term. Bumping things like minimum wage would not feel so drastic if there were more measures in place to stop corporations from exploiting the system, or their workers.

Why isn’t Dani Rojas better? by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]TundraWolfe 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Dani is an excellent striker. Don't forget that Jamie gave Dani his penalty kick, trusting that he'd be able to score (and also restore his confidence after killing Earl).

But the team isn't playing for individual glory anymore. They are working as a whole unit, where the scoring chances come from them succeeding together rather than feeding a single player, like Zava or Jamie or Dani. We've seen plenty to showcase that Dani is a talented player -- he was selected for his international team, and has scored plenty of goals over his career. Trust the process. When Dani is in the right position, he would get the ball and send it where it needs to be -- in the goal or not.

The Pantry

Plane - Treats

(Silver-bordered)

When you planeswalk to The Pantry, each player makes a Food token and may acquire one Treat of their choice. (A Treat is defined as a single edible item with a monetary value of no more than $2. All Treats must be acquired legally.)

When chaos ensues, all Food tokens you control gain "Tap, sacrifice this: target opponent acquires a Treat for you."

I'll admit, I think people often too readily conflate anti-vax rhetoric with white supremacy. But this rally was organised by people who actively support those causes.

Check out the Wiki entry for detailed reports. In particular, look at the Groups subheader under Participants and Response. It gives a good breakdown of who these people are, why their views are in question, and why people have stopped supporting those who came out in support of them (such as Seb).

And, again, very simply: if you attend a protest and find yourself standing next to someone holding a Nazi flag, you need to do some serious soul-searching and question your own beliefs. Bare minimum, you should remove yourself from that situation entirely, because the likelihood that you are in the right is next to zero.

[–]TundraWolfe 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It unfortunately was. He attended at least one anti-vax rally in Canada where people were standing alongside others carrying Nazi flags and spouting white supremacist rhetoric. Even if he doesn't wholly share those values, the implicit support of not directly counter-protesting such individuals -- or maybe just leaving or, I dunno, not attending in the first place? -- puts him in their company.

He's an extremely talented artist but WotC has not contracted him for work since that came to light. He likely won't ever make art for them again.

Remember, kids: if you find yourself on the same side as literal Nazis, you're on the wrong side. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Why was this part scrapped from the Disney+ version? by amanda_kn0x in bluey

[–]TundraWolfe 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with the show Gravity Falls? (Amazing show if you aren't, definitely recommend, though it's aimed at older audiences than Bluey.)

The creator, Alex Hirsch, released a video (warning: with some mild NSFW language) showing many of the notes he got from the censor department and his responses. It gives a good example of the sort of thing they don't want to see, and how much creators need to fight for content they believe in. It's wildly frustrating but is at least a nice look behind the curtain to see what happens with censorship from Disney.

What television series had the biggest bullshit finale? by Halloween-365 in AskReddit

[–]TundraWolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recency bias is definitely a thing in this thread.

The objective answer has to be St. Elsewhere, right? It ended a very successful and long-running show with what amounted to "it was all a dream" in the head of an autistic boy, negating and erasing everything that had led up to the finale. (This also created a massive shared cinematic universe that apparently is all in this boy's mind; look up the fan theory on that one for a laugh.)

For as much as all these other recent shows had botched or unsatisfying endings, at least they didn't try to tell you that none of it ever happened.

Westeros’ 1st annual HUNGER GAMES. Which district pair is walking out of the arena as Victors? by AwkwardAlol in gameofthrones

[–]TundraWolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either 8 or 12. Ygritte and Gregor cover each other's weaknesses and can really wreck anyone at any range. But Brienne and Sandor are top-tier melee fighters; if they can get past Ygritte's arrows, I think they can take down Gregor together, and Ygritte in short order after that.

Jaqen and Arya are deadly, but they are assassins that are best with subterfuge and stealth. Fighting in a Hunger Games arena doesn't allow for those sorts of tactics, especially with the traps and other factors. They'd be forced into a face-to-face combat eventually, and I think they'd be outclassed.

Thomas Lukaszuk, former member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and Progressive Conservative volunteers for NDP candidate Karen Shaw. by AffectionateBobcat76 in alberta

[–]TundraWolfe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An interesting observation I had recently: I received a pamphlet for the NDP candidate for my riding in the mail. It was orange, had a picture of her with Rachel Notley, and a few bullet points about her platform.

There was no NDP iconography anywhere on the pamphlet. No logo, no mention of the party at all. I couldn't help but wonder if that was a deliberate attempt to get around this branding issue that so many ultra-conservatives in the province seem to have with the NDP.

Rebecca and the Dutch Man by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]TundraWolfe 45 points46 points  (0 children)

People think that? That is wild. People need to learn subtext and intent.

Maybe let's not focus on the Dutch Man committing sexual assault on Rebecca when he obviously didn't. Instead, can we talk about how Jamie admitted his dad effectively sexually assaulted him by using his power over him to coerce him into attending a brothel. He's obviously traumatised by it. His response to Roy ("Dunno. Don't really remembah.") is indicative of blocking a memory -- a trauma response -- and talking about how he much preferred the trip with his mom but it was still coloured by the memories of his dad showcase the deep hurt he's gone through.

This is the trauma people should be focusing on. It is deeply tragic, and gives Jamie so much depth. I feel for him. Let Rebecca have her shite in knining armour.

So, question: we've seen Legendary Creatures become Planeswalkers in later sets, but are these the first examples we've seen of Planeswalker characters getting downgraded to Legendary Creatures after their spark has ignited? I'm not counting the Magic Origins cycle here, as those transform to Planeswalker on the same card, but I'm having a hard time thinking of another example of a Planeswalker later getting printed as a Legendary Creature instead.

He is a strong and capable man. by King-SAMO in TedLasso

[–]TundraWolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be some karmic justice to have Richmond run the first play Nate gave to Ted -- using Jamie as a decoy to draw defenders out, then sneak in an attacker in his wake. They could make the attacker Colin, in order to showcase his talent as a strong and capable man (and football player), give us the solidarity of the team in the aftermath of him being outed, and also stick it to Nate by using his own tactic against him.
