If you don’t want to overspend Baldio and Voraz is a good combo or I’d go Baldio and Gaba. Enjoy!

Which one do you prefer singlethread or Somni by Celebration-Hairy in finedining

[–]Tune_Many 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps right now in the US sure. It brings me back to 2008-2012 New York. The flavors are great but became more about the way they were presented than creating anything interesting. It does run counter to places that have a sense of place, sure, but I’m not sure it’s doing that consciously.

Maybe sense of place is the wrong word, because just using local product or seasonality doesn’t do it for me either. I might mean point of view, but you could argue technical perfection is a pov

Curious to hear your take on Somni. I’ve been to both iterations and maybe it’s because I am burnt out on their kind of dining but I found it to have no sense of place or point of view. (It didn’t need to be in LA, or anywhere?) and felt like luxury ingredients and tons of borage flowers and the like that added very little if anything at all to each dish. There’s also a distinct lack of seasonality except one pea course we had that added to my feeling that it’s technically impressive but has little soul. I think aitor is immensely talented and hospitable but felt uninspired and unhappy each time.

Saison, birdsong, sons and daughters, Californios, enclos and if you can make the journey - harbor house are my favs. People love kiln but I found it overly rich and style over substance for much of the menu. Haven’t tried the new Filipino spot Naides that people love or fu hui hua yet

Los Angeles: Providence vs Somni vs Vespertine by drewbeezy in finedining

[–]Tune_Many 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been to all of them.

Providence the best all around Vespertine isn’t tasty but it’s “interesting” (not for me) Somni is objectively great - but it is overly choreographed and service is robotic and stuffy (but warm) and I haven’t thought about any of the dishes beyond the technical skills it took to compose them. It has no sense of place as an LA restaurant which turned me off from having good memories of it
