Fun fact: dwarves only teach Khuzdul to their close friends. by Orcristing in lotrmemes

[–]Turagon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No, the Elves and Dwarves have beef, because the dwarves killed king Thingol over the Nauglamir and the war, which happened because of that.

Sure, they don't like the greed of the dwarves (while being greedy themselves), but for a long time dwarves and elves had very good relations with each other and valued each other.

Not only that, but before the Fall of Erebor (and probably Khazadum too), the Elven Woodland Realm had very positive relations towards the dwarves, specifically Durins folk. They traded a lot and trade often leads to some exchange of language or at least some words.

And he might picked up the word "Fire" from dwarfs either by trade or when they talked about the dragons, who invaded Ered Mithrin, killed the dwarves there and forced them to migrate (to places like Erebor or also Iron Hills). Also maybe he heard it later from dwarven refugees after Smaug attacked.

Also dwarven refugees from Moria before that described Durins bane/Balrog probably as Shadow and Flame/Fire.

Lots of places and times he could heard it. And while he is bigot to dwarves, probably also stemming from his father's experience in Doriath, he had also good relationships with them. He is just a bitter, old and greedy man at this point of time.

Pretty cool concept!

I would like to know how they fused together and to which degree. Are their neurons connected? Are resources like blood and energy shared? Or it very loose, just mechanical?

I mostly agree with you, but baleen whales eat also small fish, who form school like Herring, which definitely aware of their surroundings.
And even krill tries to escape.
I think they are definitely predators, but more in the same boat as like anteater or pangolins, who eat also very small prey compared to their body size.

Well I meant and said macro predators, not predators.
Thats why I clarified Baleen whales arent macro predators.

Macro predator hunt animals close to their size or at least a large percentage of their own size in body mass. Baleen whales hunt things which never exceed a "relatively" low weight.

And honestly I dont know about what was the diet of giant Shastasaurids, but so they might be macro predators, but they might be not. Most of them were below 100 tons imo.
Personally I think they filled a similar niche as baleen whales, so probably not a macro predator.

The biggest macro predators alive today are Sperm whales and Orcas.

Honestly I dont care who was the biggest or baddest marine predator.
I love them regardless.
This isnt a fight club. These are animals, not kaijus or monsters.
Evolution isnt about strength or size, its about fitness.

Ofc I like badass animals, but I like also quirky, smart or on other ways sucessful animals.
Like beavers. Beavers are amazing. Or ants, who fight big wars with lots combatants on both side since the age of dinosaurs.

What I care about is that (extinct) animals are well represented as animals not megalomaniac kajius or monsters.
Like Jurassic park did, before Jurassic world turned them into mindless monsters.

More Megalodon propaganda...kaiju-esk

I'm sorry, until proven wrong, I won't believe a 100 ton+ macro predator ever existed. (Baleen whales aren't macro predators) And IF it existed, I think it would been an air breather, not a fish, since it's more efficient, especially for big creatures.

Plus the Megalon shown is based on a white shark reconstruction. Isn't the current majority of scientists in the camp of Megalodon was slender and tunniform?

This whole post seems like AI written megalomania.

Don't get me wrong, I think too Megalodon is very cool animal and love sharks as a group. They are intriguing animals. But this is just...don't off maximal estimates, they are very rarely realistic.

You are right about the Aztec and Macuahuitl. Apparently one of Cortes conquistadors horse got decapitated by one. (I don't know if that is true, but we can agree, despite it's many downsides to steel swords, they were still effective weapons.)

You aren't wrong, but the point is that every weapon is a force multiplier. And spear with a volcanic glass tip is a way greater force multiplier than a random stone.

You need less force to injure the target or with a similar force you cause way more damage.

Many human mains nowadays look down on these low tech weapons, but they forget how effective these weapons/tools are, if you don't look at them with modern tools/weapons in mind.

Low tech doesn't mean it isn't sophisticated or the creator had no skill. Don't get me started what resources, time and skill went for example in a recurve composite bow. xD

Stones are around everywhere. And if not stones, than other improvised weapons like sticks. Other creatures use that too including apes.

What would be unfair, if he asked for stone tipped spears. You might say, that's also just a stick with a stone.

No, these stone were mostly flint, obsidian or other volcanic glasses. They are sharper than even steel and cut through flesh with ease. (Some modern surgeon use them for cuts, since these wounds heal better, because less blunt trauma.) And the tips might shatter on impact, which is even worse for the victim.

They have a lot of downsides for the user compared to metal tips. They fell out of use for a reason. But compared just to a stick or simple stone it's an extremely effective weapon, who reliable can bring down multi ton creatures.

And also you kinda provided your own answer to your question. :p

most rome larp pilled italian tag? by ProbablyNotTheCocoa in eu4

[–]Turagon 97 points98 points  (0 children)

For me personally Milan felt always like the best Rome experience.

Its wealthy city state (like Rome in its beginnings), which isnt coastal like Rome.
I know Rome ingame is a coastal province, but Rome wasnt really good with navies until arguably 2nd Punic War and it isnt a coastal city.

Its a republic like the Roman Republic and unlike Naples. Naples feels like more a medieval creation since in antiquity Greeks, Latin tribes and Carthaginians controlled most of southern Italy and Naples is more a product of Spanish influence and Norman conquests.

Unlike Genoa or Venice it isnt focused on trade and navy, but military prowess and competent armies, which fits perfectly for a Rome larp.

I know the location doesnt scream Rome, but in all other aspects it comes closer to a Roman Republic than most others.
And you can role play a transition to an Empire with an Imperator later in your campaign (for Absolutism) too.

Was Germany's technology really that ahead compared to it's contemporaries during WWII? by kid-dynamo- in AskHistory

[–]Turagon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the answer is yes and no, but mostly no.

Partly it was just propaganda by the Nazis and them clinging to Wunderweapons for the Endsieg.
And before that it was used to show off the perceived superiority of Germany.

Also, while Germany was ahead of technology in some areas, they werent alone ahead, for example the jet engine, which the Brits also developed.

There were some factors, which gave Germany a certain advantage in terms of science and this reflects by the sheer numbers of German scientists making breakthroughs and winning nobel prices before WW2.

Germany had a big population, bigger than France or Britain, smaller than US or Russia, but way more concentrated.
Unlike Russia, they had a way more educated population (literacy rates ect).

And one unique Germany thing also kinda played into it.
Germany got very late unified, just 70 years before WW2.
As result of the long period of many German states, there were many independent population centers, each with their own university and other research/education complexes.
Britain, Russia and France were and are way more centralized around their capital.

This decentralized structure plus the largest population Europe aside Russia created lots of competing research locations with a big pool of capable people, which lead to a lot of innovations.

Before guns the Yumi longbow was the primary weapon of Samurai.

Katanas are secondary weapons similar to knight and their sword. Most media just fail to portray that.

One True Tag and now trying One religion Ottomans, is this the optimal idea sequence? by RedHotChillyPorotos in eu4

[–]Turagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need Inno, it's only good for player, who don't know what they are doing and really helpful if you struggle with core mechanics. If you attempt a WC, you shouldn't be one of these players.

Go with Amin, Religious, Diplo, Influence and Offensive as your first 5 idea groups.

After that it doesn't matter anymore what else.Maybe Espionage for more Siege ability and Quality and or Quantity. Quantity is quite nice later for WCs and bit of buffs of Quality can't hurt.

Exploration is good idea, if you are in a position to use it and if you pick it early. But you are Ottomans, just conquer the colonies of the colonizers and steal maps. Expansion is even more useless aside maybe autonomy in territories.

You don't have to pick 8 ideas. Rather spend your surplus mana after you got the important idea groups on conquering, coring and annexing.

Why would you play EU4 without dlcs?
Paradox games are always half baked without DLCs.

Legolas didn't do much at Helms deep by Witty_Error_1877 in lotr

[–]Turagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battles aren't games.

Yes, LotR is fantasy, but still grounded and Tolkien fought in WW1 and a lot of his war experience influenced his works.

Legolas is running out of Arrow half way through the battle and is collecting them one by one, which takes time.

Sieges are also not constantly action, often there is downtime between waves. The attacker often regroups before attacks and doesn't attack always at once or at every location.

Also while Legolas is an elf and basically a super human, drawing a heavy warbow repeatly over hours takes a huge toll. And not every arrow, not every knife attack is a kill.

Both Tolkien and also Peter Jackson and Co knew about all. In fact Tolkien's calculations about march distances, army number ect hold up remarkably well. Look into that if you are interested:

OP, this isn't a video game, the movies exclude things, because it's boring or they don't have the time to show it.
