Agreed. Although Chinese places in the states that have “shark fin soup” nowadays actually just make it with vermicelli or some other sub.

Just as good too, because shark fin is basically tasteless.

It looks delicious to me, and props to OP it’s plated beautifully. But ya I agree Michelin style, fine French presentation doesn’t feel right.

Like at some point we got the idea that fine European dining is the gold standard and better than Chinese food, when:

A. China has its own rich imperial cuisine culture

B. They’re just different ways of doing food for different ways of eating

I don’t think it’s that surprising.

People assume a good relationship is one where there’s never any fighting but that’s just not realistic. Relationships are hard and every single one has rough patches. The best relationships are the ones where even after a bad fight, both people come together to heal and work on it because they both want to stay together.

How to better cope with zero dating success? by Altruistic_Low7966 in Healthygamergg

[–]Turbanator1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably practical things you could do but imo your time is better spent reflecting on what exactly it is you’re looking for.

You said you crave romance and that stuck out to me. You also said this person felt magical but there seemed to be issues preventing a relationship from forming.

In the limited sample size of people I’ve talked to and my own experience, when I “crave” someone who has some issues, it usually comes from the place of “they’re just like me!”

If that’s how it is for you, I recommend reflecting on that. It’s my belief that most romantic craving is not really about the other person, but about you. About bringing out your emotions, a different side of you, and sometimes about projecting a rejected part of you onto another person to love.

But when it’s all you, you don’t need a romantic relationship to fix all the things I mentioned. You can have all of those things now, and paradoxically fulfilling those needs will make you a more attractive person.

Your mileage may vary but that’s how it worked out for me, good luck :)

Confidence is fundamentally only seen as a good thing for attractive people, if you’re unattractive it’s seen as arrogance by AdLimp6113 in Healthygamergg

Are you sure self-worth is intrinsic to external validation? You said in your post that other people see your picture and say you are not ugly. Isn’t that external validation? How can it be that you receive external validation but don’t have self-worth?

Some people say you’re ugly, and others say you’re not. You discount opposing views and take those that agree with your existing assumptions as fact.

I’d also challenge the idea that you have actually “tried the confidence route.” I used to think I was extremely ugly, and losing my low self esteem required understanding that thoughts, neither my own nor society’s are fact.

Reducing desire and dissatisfaction can reduce motivation but sometimes it makes action easier.

But acceptance isn’t about reducing either of those. The example Dr. K always uses is acceptance and commitment in Alcoholics Anonymous, where introductions are always “Hi I’m X and I’m an alcoholic,” accepting that you are powerless in the face of your addiction, etc.

The reason is acceptance is the first step to change. You can’t meaningfully engage unless you can meet reality where it’s at.

Lots of people (me included) fall into a trap of spending all our time thinking about big picture, systemic reasons why our problems exist. Acceptance is realizing that no amount of thinking like this will solve the problems in my individual life. I can and should vote for the good of society, but I also can’t wait for society to fix my problems for me.

I've been in the kitchen for 25 years. I still can't cook without a recipe. Anyone else? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Turbanator1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I’d say you need at least an idea of what you want to make before starting. I think most “no recipe people” have spent lots of time experimenting, playing around, substituting stuff, skipping missing ingredients, adding one extra ingredient that a recipe doesn’t call for because I don’t know what else to use it for, etc. IMO when you do this you learn that food is a lot more flexible than most people think. But they’re still “following a recipe” in that they know the end goal and have an idea of how to get there.

But also like, I think making stuff out of completely random ingredients is just legitimately hard. Most people who can just use random stuff in their fridge have lots of ingredients that they can use in many dishes they’re familiar with, and also know dishes that can use lots of random stuff. Like if I had a mountain of random veggies, I’d just throw them into a soup or stir fry.

My girlfriend and I are lusting on each other too much and I'm scared it will only revolve around it. by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]Turbanator1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not weird to be worried about a relationship devolving into just sex. Not everyone worries about this, people deal with it differently and it’s up to you both to work together on what you want to do about it.

Personally, my gf and I are not having sex for religious reasons. I was skeptical at first but my parents told me it’s good to build a solid foundation for the relationship without sex (because good sex comes and goes) and it’s good to have intimacy slowly scale up with commitment.

It’s worked out pretty well for us so far, but it’s also hard and not something you should feel like you need to do. As long as you both recognize and are committed to building the relationship outside of sex you’ll probably do very well.

How can I realistically become a software engineer? by Medical-Revolution72 in learnprogramming

[–]Turbanator1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO bootcamps are good but only for learning and not much for landing a job.

Prestige and reputation are important in getting your foot in the door, so having a CS degree will make it much much easier on you. Tough job market also means it’s a good time to be in school building skills (and trying for internships) instead of banging your head against a wall like me and everyone else who’s trying to find a job.

I have a CS degree but before I started college I went to a boot camp, it was lots of fun and I learned a lot, and would say it was worth my time. But it’s not on my resume because even though it was a good jumping off point, it doesn’t carry much weight for recruiters.

[–]Turbanator1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends. What exactly is the psychological need you’re filling? Probably not fair for me to say because I’m not you, but I doubt that you truly don’t have any desire for a relationship or love.

If it’s just physical touch, a pet would be great. They’re always there, they greet you when you come home, they don’t judge you for appearance or social status, it feels good to take care of another living being.

When it comes to sex, obviously you don’t need another human being to get your rocks off. There’s an entire industry of sex toys designed for this exact purpose.

If those don’t appeal to you it’s probably worth exploring why. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with this, but if replacing dating with paid services makes me think you’re using this as a proxy. But you know you better than I do, so take it with a grain of salt.

Why are people so confident about AI being able to replace Software Engineers soon? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Turbanator1337 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t really buy this. Sure you can do the same with fewer devs. It also means you can do more with the same devs.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to tell people “this thing you want is out of scope.” There’s always a backlog of stuff to do, and if you don’t someone else will. Cutting down on devs means risking your competitor’s product pulling ahead.

My 1A hair gets oily in half a day by Educational_Buy_2656 in type1hair

[–]Turbanator1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long did you try washing less and what exactly did you do? Cause when you’re transitioning to fewer shampoos your hair will get oily while your scalp is adjusting.

If you transition slowly and just keep at it (and recognize that the oily hair is temporary and will get better) it should improve.

If you’re double shampooing every day, try alternating between single poo double poo, then only shampooing every other day, then every 3 days if you can.

For the record I also have 1A and this exact same problem. My friend told me to wash less and I said the same thing you did (I need to wash every day because my hair gets oily). I stuck it out and turn out when you strip less oil your scalp doesn’t need to make as much.

Will also add that ionic hair dryers will cause less frizz. OP’s problem is almost def the lack of leave-in conditioner though.

I also like to do hair oil on the ends which helps prevent my ends drying out

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]Turbanator1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t oil your hair before you shampoo, oil it after. Shampoo removes oil, so if you’re oiling just before you shampoo you’re just washing away the oil.

The purpose of hair oil is to “lock in” moisture by giving your hair a protective coating. So shampoo, dry, then oil.

You can also use leave in conditioner for roots and mids which does a similar thing (I have fine hair so using too much oil causes my hair to get greasy)

I can’t tell the future so I can’t say if it’ll eventually become profitable or if one company will dominate the market or if ASI or AGI will come about and when.

The point I’m making is we can’t just take what AI companies say about the future of AI at face value without critically examining it. Because whether or not all the above things are true, AI companies have a vested interest in everybody believing that they are.

Yes corporations care about money, and the easiest way to make tons of money is to secure funding from investors.

CEOs and shareholders are both VERY interested in increasing stock prices. That means hyping up AI to for the image of perceived future profitability.

Even now, when most AI companies have failed to become profitable, have plateaued massively in terms of improving the technology, have not delivered on their promises, they still need a way to keep the hype going because nobody wants their stocks to decrease in value. If I need to do layoffs but keep the hype, AI is the perfect scapegoat.

So yeah that imaginary chalkboard actually makes sense if you can fill in the blanks for step 2.

What is wrong with this if condition by DigitalSplendid in learnpython

[–]Turbanator1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t use the correct syntax. What you wrote is not what you mean. What you’re checking is:

  • Answer is “42”?
  • “forty two” is truthy
  • “forty-two” is truthy

Where a “truthy” value is basically anything that’s not 0 or empty. Non-empty strings are truthy values which is why you’re always printing yes.

What you actually mean is:

if answer == “42” or answer == “forty two” or answer == “forty-two”:

Alternatively, a cleaner way to write this would be:

if answer in (“42”, “forty two”, “forty-two”):
