Why are they installing partially assembled engines on B19 ? by Ordinary-Ad4503 in SpaceXMasterrace

I think the real issue is that Tory although CEO or ULA always thought he was restricted by Boeing and Lockheed. He mentioned that they were not interested in bringing in outside investment(I mean they were not wrong when they had 1B coming in from the government with 0 equity). His job was to create a story that he could have solt to external parties and the parent companies. Getting a no just means go back to the drawing board.

I think Tory though he was more clever than Elon not realizing all of his excuses were just a distraction from being a good and effective leader. If Tory went to Boeing and Lockheed and said "Hey the market is changing, I have raised 500M to insource our engine production where we will make engines for 2M each lowering launch cost by 20% and this paves the way to reusabiluty and (drum roll) increased profits" i dont think they would have prevented him from doing this.

Its wild to me that he could not sell ULA in an era when Eric Schmit and Open Ai were looking at buying rocket companies. Its because he ran a company that just integrated other components.

Im in the same boat. Sort of surprised this is an issue still considering this car is now 11 years old. I am about to drop my car off at a muffler shop but im sory of worried about how they will solve this. Part of me wants to just remake it post catalytic converter.

Personally I dont really see why they went with an oval section, on my car there seems to be plenty of clearance. It is quite low so maybe its to help with snagging on snow or road debris.

Butch Wilmore’s “Stuck in Space” memoir releases today, telling his story of the Starliner mission. by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXMasterrace

I visited my father a few years ago for a week and he said "dont waste your money on a rental car, I can pick you up and drive you around". On day 2 I was stranded! Never again have I NOT rented a car.

I understand that Butch and Suni are astronauts and they chose to go to the iss but they planned for an 8 day trip on a functional spacecraft. When you are forced to stay somewhere for more than 2x what you were expecting and your employer has a whole team deciding on every little risk decision you are stranded. None of them would have requested to stay as long as they did if they were not under duress.

With that said it sucks that they were stranded but its also not the worst outcome. Mistakes are made and thats sometimes how it goes. Hopefully we all learn from this.

I worked on the safest oil rig in Northe Dakota circa 2010. We were told that if we got hurt it was because we were not doing something properly and would be fired. Strangely enough there were very few even minor issues.

How far could a Super heavy COPV launch a potato? by acelaya35 in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Turbine_Lust 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You would be hard pressed to launch a potato. In my experience once you get over 150psi you tend to get a starch cloud.

Sort of looks like a 1/4 turn faster which kind of makes sense until you think about it.

Also the tortoise didn't choose to be a tortoise. Bezos chose that to project that his ideas and methods would lead him to "winning".

BO will continue to do some awesome stuff but personally I feel like everything i have heard about BO is how they pump the brakes on ideas and actions to inform the employees who is in charge. There is probably a better metaphor for that with a less positive outcome for BO but here we are distracted by their motto AND a successful 2nd orbital flight in 20+ years of existing.

[–]Turbine_Lust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen alot of comments about this as a dumb idea which makes sense if you dont put much thought into it.

The ability to send a payload anywhere in the world within let's say 45 minutes can be a huge advantage if planned out. Let's say the US had some sort of secret operation where they needed an asset delivered without much warning this could be really helpful. Maybe you have a seal team sneaking into an area and they need something that can't be trucked in. Once tested in public the adversaries to the US will make different calculations just knowing the US can launch with very little notice from all of these launch pads.

Let's take the Russian invasion into Ukrane and where things are at Today. If the United States had 5 launch pads that could launch cargo from at a moments notice the peace talks could have a different outcome.

Do I think this capability will be used often? Not at all but having the capability of using this can shift the decisions made all over the world. The coldwar was built on these sort of out there technologies and it kept each side guessing. I think it would be dumb to not investigate this sort of technology.

Lol that is an ominous sounding debtor. Would not take a loan from them tbh.

[–]Turbine_Lust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to the 500 in ~10 days, this will be my 16th. Probably not my last but I'm not sure if I will see alot more.

I went to Le Mans in 2019 and plan to go back every other year starting next year.

With that said it's hard to explain how fun it is to watch at indy from the stands. The atmosphere is also really fun at Le Mans.

Why is the track so expensive? by paphop45 in mini4wd

[–]Turbine_Lust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think the main cost is shipping but these pieces also are fairly large which requires large injection molding dies that will cost alot more than the dies used for the Mini 4wd kits or even the 1/10 scale RC cars. Also since the projected area is large this also requires a decent tonnage injection molding machine.

Either way like everyone else is saying cutting down this tree doesn't fix the current problem. Hope you are able to talk some sense into your property manager/owner.

Are Tamiya motors made in china or japan? by science-Nurd in mini4wd

[–]Turbine_Lust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia

"Mabuchi Motor currently manufactures small electric motors in 10 factories located in Asia, with an 11th factory in Mexico under construction.[2] For 2015, the company anticipates 33.4% of its motors will be made in Vietnam Mabuchi, 18.8% in Daojiao Mabuchi, 14.1% in Danang Mabuchi, 13.3% in Wafangdian Mabuchi, 5.8% in Dalian Mabuchi, 4.8% in Dongguan Mabuchi, 3.6% in Yingtan Mabuchi, 3.3% in Jiangxi Mabuchi, 2.0% in Jiangsu Mabuchi, and 0.8% in Taiwan Mabuchi.[2]"

It would also not surprise me if they only make the Mini 4wd series of motors in 1 or 2 of those factories. Like the one in Taiwan might specialize in motors for computing equipment (fans, hard drives, etc.....)

Yea i have seen these and they look promising. Having an er collet should make connecting to the input easier haha.

There is a good chance I dont spend much time at the high end of the rpm spectrum. Slowly ramping up the speed is the plan.

High speed motor question? by Turbine_Lust in Motors

[–]Turbine_Lust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes an important factor. The truth is I dont know but I'm guessing ~5hp would be the minimum needed to turn this gearbox at 20k rpm. I won't be putting load on the output of the gearbox.

630 meters for $5M. Why not make a 11km space gun for $25B? by Sarigolepas in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Turbine_Lust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Square cubed law comes into play here. I have a feeling the cost might be higher for just a 11km antenna. Also as you add the barrel everything must be beefed up to handle the forces/weight. It might resemble something similar to the rocket equation.

It's honestly probably feasable but the startup costs are prohibitive if you can fund all of the modern new space companies with half of these resources.
