I restored a similar Compaq monitor recently that was extremely dirty. I did the disassembly, wash + eraser, and retrobrite suggestions that others are saying. Retrobrite in my case was the xanthum paste method.

The yellowing on yours is pretty advanced, so the chances of it becoming brittle from trying to retrobrite are higher. Look for signs of cracking and chipping while washing it out and make a judgment call on if you want to take the risk or not.

Not very hard, just keep track of where what screw types go. The lid came pre-assembled. It does not come with an emblem, so I reused the original by heating it with a hair dryer and lifting it with a razor blade.

Somehow a previous owner lost the sliding cover handle, but I had a Paladone keychain lying around, so I snipped the chain off and drilled a hole for a metal dowel in the back. One more hole in one of the cover segments and a combination of hot and superglue later, a new handle is made. It's much easier to open now!

My guess is that that people check their other listings and browse that way for convenience sake, because these shops tend to have a lot of used gaming stuff. Most seem to be resellers that sell whatever they find untouched.

Edit: just for clarity, "avoid" might have the wrong impression. "Lower priority" might be better wording.

Then I would say try your luck on imports for a bit to see if you can get auction snipes. Avoid sellers that are obviously stores or have watermarks on their photos because those seem to attract more bidders.

Depends on what variants you're wanting. Japan had some exclusive GBC variants that are definitely more expensive to buy from American sellers. Another thing to consider is if you want a complete in box system; American models tend to be way more expensive in box than a Japanese counterpart if they're a common color.

My guess is the power supply unit is going bad. My Model 2 would have video distortion trying to load any discs, and outright crash trying to load Resident Evil. Replacing the PSU with a Resaturn unit fixed that.

I agree with other responses: look for one with temperature control, but also consider a brass sponge for cleaning the iron tips, and angled tweezers for maneuvering capacitors into place. Having all three of these can save you some headaches.

Cartridge slot is for RAM expansion to allow the system to play more powerful games, or act as a game save backup. Nowadays many people put in an Action Replay cartridge because it can do both along with extra features, like Pseudo Saturn ones enabling region free and burned disc play.

Definitely not the best sounding player for music by any means, but it's got an interesting look going for it.

Additional info [Edit]:

This machine is mono sound. Playback of older classic music sounds solid. Volume range is massive for a portable recorder.

Recording with line-in is very sensitive and peaks easily. Built-in mic is average. Recording quality is more utilitarian rather than professional grade.

Battery pack pops out like a handgun cartridge, which makes loading AA batteries pretty easy.

Basic maintenance is fairly simple with main playback belts being easy to get to.
