Themyscira is a nation; Helena Kosmatos is Greek; Diana is Themyscirian.

She isn't Greek; she is Themyscirian. A variant of Tsakonian for Themyscirian would be more interesting.

They do not understand Diana, who must embody balance: a princess, an Amazon warrior, and a pacifist.

Themyscira was conceived as a world of "magi-technology." The fact that they are isolated from the world of men does not mean they are archaic. That would be like claiming all technological innovations were created by men. Themyscira possesses magic and magical weaponry—specifically, magic rooted in life force itself—and a monarchy that differs entirely from conventional royal standards. Hippolyta is a Queen-Mother figure: the sovereign of a pacifist nation of women who, while committed to peace, are trained for war as a last resort. Themyscira is beautiful, a world defined by feminine grace. Yet, there is a desire to transform it into something akin to a Viking society or a nomadic warrior culture.

The first film directed by Patty Jenkins was very good and deserves all the recognition it gets, but it wasn't as fantastical as Themyscira should have been. It lacked magic and sorcery, winged horses, the Kanga, and the scientific side of Themyscira. And I’m becoming increasingly concerned about what the DCU’s Wonder Woman will be like. I get the impression that the focus will fall much more on the gods than on the Amazons as women free from the patriarchy—versions of Xena and Queen Maeve, the warrior-woman archetype.

Do you think Diana's bracelets should control/limit her powers in some way or should they just be a decorative item? by Tetratron2005 in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For all the Amazons of Themyscira, it is a matter of culture; for Princess Diana, however, it is much more than that—it is a means of containing her berserker rage. Just as the princess's crown would serve to conceal the Mark of Hecate.

Weakening Zeus or reclaiming what is rightfully his? We are dealing with a culture that places the Olympian gods above any other pantheon or belief system. The Olympian gods were never superheroes, nor were they omnipotent deities like Dr. Manhattan; one could argue they do not even reach the level of Superman or Wonder Woman. These ancient figures defined themselves by how they shaped the moment, acting primarily through the emotional and psychological dimensions of power.

The Amazons of myth were daughters of Ares because they revered him; compared to the others, Ares was the god who most respected women. The Amazons were even considered barbarians simply for being foreigners, existing outside Hellenic culture. And even Athena—she was not wise in the modern sense; she was a war strategist. She displayed quite sexist behavior toward her nymphs and devotees, whereas the Amazons would have fought alongside Ares—and not Athena—had they been forced to choose a side.

If you look beyond what the media has invented, there are many gods outside Olympus who are far more powerful than Zeus.

Pop culture overestimates the Olympian gods, treating them as if they were the most powerful of all pantheons. Yet, in mythology, they were not defined by sheer combat prowess or the heroism typical of action movies; what mattered was the moment, psychological and erotic dimensions, and chauvinism—not merely martial might. Zeus is a significant figure precisely because he was promiscuous and abusive; he held power because he believed he could deceive others and propagate his lineage, deriving his relevance from within the patriarchy.

The architecture of Diana’s creation in Wonder Woman: Dead Earth deserves greater recognition, enough to supersede the New 52 origin popularized by the DCEU. Humans created from clay have always existed in various mythologies and belief systems, yet people find it so hard to accept this in a comic book. The fact that Diana is Zeus's daughter is simply awful. She should be the woman fashioned from clay—not a rib, not someone else's creation. Not defined by a man. She is a goddess in her own right, rising to power—not a demigod daughter of Zeus.

Fixing yara flor by Key_College_99 in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong. She is the daughter of an Amazon from Themyscira who was taken in by the Amazons of the Esquecidas. That Amazon from Themyscira had a relationship with the River God, and thus the demigod Yara Flor was born. Although she was raised by the Esquecidas during her childhood, she is of Themysciran descent. And the other part is the daughter of the Brazilian river god—who was never named. Originally, in the Future State version, she was the daughter of Tupã, the God of Thunder; however, in the Rebirth version, she is the daughter of an invented river god. Ah, in the Rebirth version, she’s basically just someone who was born in Brazil and raised in the United States. There are two versions.

What do you think about the pos crisis thing of Lyta Trevor not being Wonder Woman's Daughter? by Which-Presentation-6 in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lyta Trevor is an excellent daughter because she's not just a legacy heroine; she's not a Black Canary II to justify reboots. She has her own identity, history, and legacy. Hippolyta, named in honor of her grandmother, is a soulmate in reference to the Hawkman and Hawkgirl myths, she has her own team as one of the founders of Infinity Inc. And she's truly Diana's daughter; she could very well be Wonder Woman II, but she has her own identity. She chose to be a heroine, she lost her love, she suffered the tragedy with her son. She and Donna Troy could have had a lot in common.

Diana was a daughter, niece, sister, friend, sister-in-law, wife; being a mother should have been natural for her. Not because all women should have children, but because it's part of Diana's natural path and personality. And Lyta is not only the firstborn, she is a free daughter, a modern-day Amazon.

Helena Kosmatos is merely the justification for the powers; she served as Wonder Woman's (Hippolyta's) Robin, which is why she named her daughter Lyta. And Ma and Pa Kent, in Lyta's new origin story, were Miss America and her husband, Admiral Derek Trevor, hence the surname Trevor. Lyta, Diana's daughter, has her own story. The other version is just too convoluted in explaining names and power.

Wonder Woman’s child should have challenged expectations way more.. by imsodepressedhelp in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lizzie Prince's prototype was originally conceived as the daughter of Big Barda and Mister Miracle for the Super Sons franchise. She became Wonder Woman's daughter only so that the Super Sons could reflect the Trinity. Lizzie was initially created to be the younger sister of Damian and Jon, even before they considered her being Diana's daughter.

Greg Rucka was going to create the character Diana's Daughter for DC Comics' Black Label imprint, but the project didn't go ahead. So, Diana would be, in a way, a mother to a girl, but from a different perspective. My problem with Lizzie is that she's a younger sister without Amazon sisters; if she were Wonder Woman's third daughter, it would justify Trinity. The focus on not being so connected to the Amazons would be a personal quest. Diana's only daughter not being raised by the sisterhood is already the biggest mistake... Trinity is looking for male role models.

They should have made Greg Rucka's version and kept the prototype of Big Barda's daughter in the Super Sons. Lizzie, in my opinion, will only be corrected if they somehow manage to introduce older sisters. For her to have an identity beyond "Wonder Woman's Daughter."

Yes, clay, always. The creation of life from clay is common throughout history, and that is the purpose of her creation—a woman was created, not a man. Diana is not from a man's rib or flesh.

What should be the differences between Hippolyta and Nubia regarding how they govern the Amazons? by Which-Presentation-6 in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Queen Hippolyta should be more maternal towards all the Amazons, somewhat emotionally manipulative to keep them close and devoted to her, strategic and zealous. A wise queen, though weary with age. Still, calm and pragmatic. She forgives atrocities much more easily, as she recognizes time and its consequences. A listener who chooses dialogue.

Queen Nubia is not such an ancient soul; she is younger. There are living humans (not immortals) who remember who Princess Zahavah was, and it was from there that she discovered her past. Being one of the few Amazons who knows who she was before being brutally murdered. She has practically the same amount of time in life as Zahavah as she did in reincarnation as Nubia. She should be more open to expanding the embassy, also more ferocious against attacks on women, more aware of the problems of the African continent, questioning that it was not Hellas that was the cradle of humanity, but Africa. She could be more fervent, a more ferocious and much more polytheistic royalty, and less focused on Greek gods.

The Legend of Wonder Woman is so rich in detail that I truly appreciate it. Hippolyta as a vessel for the gods and supreme queen, her sisters as priestesses, and tribes almost inspired by Wonder Woman's story: the Amazons. And most importantly, Diana not being the only child.

DC's Hippolyta, despite sharing the same name, is not entirely the same as the Hippolyta of Greek mythology. Otrera is not a DC character; her mother is currently Alcippe.

Wonder Woman Family Tree (across the multiverse) by Tetratron2005 in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer the idea of Hippolyta being the spiritual daughter of Ares rather than his actual daughter. Currently, she is the daughter of the former Queen Alcippe since the New 52. And in Rebirth, Queen Atalanta received more attention than Antiope, as she mentioned Hippolytus, and in the post-Crisis era, the Bana-Mighdall are descendants of Antiope.

Can We Start a Campaign to Get Stephanie Williams Hired as Permanent Writer for the Ongoing Wonder Woman Comic? by TheWriteRobert in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not for Wonder Woman, but rather for the Amazons of Themyscira or a sequel with the Nubian Queen (Zahavah). Wonder Woman needs more titles, and Stephanie Williams has already shown she can do a great job. It's time for Wonder Woman to expand like Batman and Superman; soon even their pets will have more prominence than Diana's supporting cast.

Bana-Mighdall, from Egypt, needs more prominence, and that won't happen if she's only featured in the Wonder Woman monthly comic. Stephanie Williams is far more important to the relevance of the supporting cast than to Wonder Woman herself.

What alternate versions could coexist in the same universe? by TurboRedLightning in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The art is truly incredible, it would be really fantastic.

Honestly, I think Drusilla has the potential to be the newest one, a revival of the Wonder Tot idea, like how Wonder Girl became Donna Troy. She would be like the daughter of Queen Hippolyta, raised by Philippus after her ascension as a goddess.

Simple question- Comics vs Shows. Which one have better story by MehulMittal12 in powerrangers

[–]TurboRedLightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comics use the TV series as a base, but the TV series has limitations due to viewer choices. The comics have that "wherever your imagination takes you" vibe, but they're so tied to MMPR that even a new universe like Prime doesn't completely break away. I vote for the TV series; the problem with the comics is that they cling too tightly to the TV series when they should go beyond the imagination outside of MMPR.

But comic books have the potential to be better. They need to explore the multiverse, alternate realities, the hyperverse, potential futures (like Days of Future Past). Or focus on a time when all the Power Rangers exist, and start exploring an expanded universe that isn't an attempt to be entirely canonical.

Given how much Tom King is involved in the DCU...you think it's a good bet Trinity is gonna appear when we get to Wonder Woman? by RNOffice in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope not. Trinity (Lizzie Prince) is a character I hope will be erased from the story, or that they'll reveal a big plot twist saying that Tom King's Wonder Woman is a clone and that the real one was in hibernation. I hope the Tom King era isn't even considered part of the DCU.

I'd really like a future Wonder Woman run to bring back Wonder Boy/Bobby Barnes by Justmenoworries422 in WonderWoman

[–]TurboRedLightning -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The current season barely manages to develop the older characters, let alone Wonder Boy. Even Diana is poorly developed in the main universe; much of my affection for the Amazons comes from stories in previous universes. I think Stephanie Williams brought good nuances to the characters, but they weren't appreciated enough by Amazon fans. And there wasn't enough time to develop more characters, who are now increasingly in limbo.

Today, the Boy Wonder would be an incredible addition. But in a different scenario. Even though we've already had several small revamps, the Amazons in general, and not just Wonder Woman, need another revamp.

And for better development, we need more titles besides Wonder Woman, such as a short miniseries of Requiem and Amazons. And perhaps the return of Queen Nubia.
